There’s a reason college basketball isn’t as popular. It can be brutal to watch. I can’t remember which Maui game I was watching the other night, but the refs were actually calling all the fouls and the coaches were getting pissed. Every 15 seconds there was a whistle and every other one they had to go to the monitor.

It’s very hard for refs to fix it if coaches stubbornly insist on teaching it. It requires a level of perseverance and capacity for abuse (from coaches and fans) that’s frankly unreasonable to expect.

Ohio State made the same mistake Texas made and others make in basketball. You don't hire some interim because they had a mildly decent run after they took over. It has worked out in very rare cases, but mostly it doesn't.

The game between #1 Tennessee and Illinois is pretty much the state of modern "college" basketball....

- Illinois Top 5 players never stepped foot on campus before this year. One of them is in his 3rd year on his 3rd school. Top 2 players are overseas rentals.
- 8 of their top 10 players never played for Illinois before a few months ago.
- Tennessee Top 2 players are one year rentals. 4 of Top 6 are transfer rentals.

So out of roughly 16 players in this game, 12 of them are rental NIL transfers or international rentals or have never played for their teams before November.

The game is also an ugly physical slog and both teams are shooting about 20% from three combined. Tennessee shot 27 free throws in the first half.

So much fun and these guys bleed their (current) school colors!

I don't. It's college basketball, or at least it was. I don't want to take advantage of a system like this. It's why I don't watch anymore and it isn't because Iowa isn't in the Top 20. I used to watch a shitload of college basketball, loved it. I watch zero now.
