Our line was hardly getting hands on people half the time. It just doesn’t make sense. They of course lack talent and experience, but they also seem to lack a lot of basic fundamental technique. Sad to see.

There was one play late where the DT just ran right in between the LT and LG basically untouched. Both guys looked at him as he split the two of them and I can only assume they shared a nice gaze into each others eyes after he was past the line of scrimmage.

It really is remarkable that they can coach around that. For all the hate I give Kirk about the offense, and he deserves every bit of it. He should get praised for the defense and special teams. That they can coach around that ineptitude is incredible. It’s not like they think the offense is good, they know too. But they still get wins. It’s amazing, seems impossible.

Agree with all this but what I find amazing is how bad the offense is. So Iowa has averaged under 3.0 yds/play in 40% of their games. If the other 130 FBS teams have played 10 games each, they are like 22 out of 1300 games or 1.7% of the games. It’s like a fluke for a team to average less than 3.0 yds/play. The one dude must be on to something with the practice time deal. There really is no other explanation that makes sense.

Do not think of this Iowa team as a normal team, they aren’t. Teams don’t have defenses and special teams this good, and offenses this bad. With that lens, the decision to keep inviting Mertz to drop back and attempt passes is for sure the correct decision. It didn’t work out, obviously. But keeping the defense out there to have a chance to make a play was shrewd.
