According to Leistekow, AJ played 22 snaps Saturday out of 66 Wisconsin plays.
He must really suck playing against the run.
He actually looked fine and blew up a couple. Directly contributed to at least 2 of their shorter runs
I recall one was a nice play shedding a block and stopping the RB for no gain. It was one of the highlight plays during the telecast.

I suspect this is the Old Kirk deference to upperclassmen.

Is anyone entirely all in on the succession plan at this point?

I sorta think you’d have to be a dumbfuck.

There's nothing wrong with Brian taking over. All he has to do is not bang the co-eds and not get arrested.

The talent level in this program is the highest it has been in 8 years. We averaged .8 yards per play more than Wisconsin. Brian isn’t perfect but he is doing fine. He shouldn’t be the head coach next year but he is doing well enough to be given more time to grow into it.

Brian wants the job but he won’t be just given the job. Particularly if Phil wants it.

He isn’t inept though. This is the iowa offense under Kirk. We don’t run enough plays to ever put up huge numbers. We shorten the game with effective running. The biggest thing right now is 3rd down and red zone efficiency. We need to get better there. We show much better in some overall efficiency metrics, well into the top half to top 1/3 of FBS.

Of course the flip side is that our defense isn’t as good as we think it is based on PPG.

We aren't going to hire Bob Stoops. Id much rather take a chance on Brian than whichever MAC coach happens to go 11-3 the year Kirk retires.

I've avoided this thread. But I'm drunk and still pissed. If this has already been covered, I apologize.

I agree with this. The Rod Carey angle Moorehouse pushes is dumb. We aren’t Minnesota/Purdue/Illinois.

But I think that’s something of a false choice.

Pretty early in the season to be wringing hands, no?

I think that patience with a new offensive coordinator would be higher if it wasn't Brian as well. He's under the microscope.

I think I’ve been more patient with him than I was Greg, who I hated immediately thanks in part to @douglasbader

Sometimes I think Morehouse is a closet Wisconsin fan. His assertion that Iowa was “digging for gold” on offense seems absurd to me.

I like Brian’s scheme for Iowa and recruiting seems to be on the uptick. He’s also pretty young and is only early in his 2nd season actually calling plays.

Hiring some dork from the MAC and cratering the program for 5 years is not an appealing thought.

There's no doubt that Kirk's conservative nature hinders the offense and ties a coordinators hands. He views getting 10-15 more snaps a game as more opportunity to make mistakes and turn it over rather than scoring more points. He's been successful so it isn't going to change. Coin flip Kirk.

That seems pretty cherry picked. “4 of the last 7” type of thing. It isn’t good, but it’s probably framed that way too

Brian is over 21 points in 5 of 15 P5 games.
I think it is a combo of things. Not good WR's last year, him being new, the OL was a borderline mess last year and then some bad luck this year.

He'll get better and is getting better.

Averaged 45 ppg in those 5 games. It's definitely been feast or famine in his time. He also has played a tough schedule of P5 games to this point. That will change the rest of this year.

Barring injury, if can't manage more than 21 in 6 of the last games, there is real reason for concern even though it's only his second season. That's a shitty schedule.

Iowa is going to be a fucking monster the rest of the year. The defense is as legit as any Ferentz has had in 20 years. They struggle in deep coverage, but no team they play the rest of the year will throw deep on them or have the offensive line good enough to do it.

This team is going to lose 1 more game. Wisconsin will need to lose only 1 game the rest of the way to go to Indianapolis. That isn't going to happen as Michigan, Penn State and Northwestern or Purdue are going to beat them.

If Iowa loses 1 Wisconsin can drop two right?

Think of this.... Wisconsin returned 11 starters and the best offensive line in the country and the only way they could beat Iowa was to throw 7 of them on the field at the same time and on the back of 2 fluke turnovers. It took them until the last couple minutes of the game with every single break going their way.

Right. That is why I have them down for 3 losses.

I'm not even sure if that will be the case. I think Iowa wins out.

Now @The Dad is basically the same. Big ol' dick sucking curmudgeon. But I think it's mostly because he hates himself and his job.

Iowa starts 3 sophomores on the offensive line (counting Banwart).

3 of the 5 receivers that see snaps when the game matters are sophomores. The 4th is a senior junior college walk-on transfer, the 5th a division 2 transfer.

Their stud tight end is a true junior and the other stud tight end is a sophomore.

Their starting tailback is a true sophomore.

Their quarterback is a true junior and with the new rules would be a sophomore.

And almost all of those guys had to play key roles last season because of how fucked the roster was because of GDGD, Chris White and Bobby Kennedy.

Brian might end up being terrible but almost all offensive coordinators are. He at least has shown different looks and the offense appears to be a lot less boring than it used to be. I honestly think they’re going to be mauling people by the last 1/3 of the season.

the WRs have been pretty bad for a while and aren’t particularly good right now. they lucked out when a greyshirt turned out to be decent but otherwise GD/Kennedy really murdered that position. Can’t really blame it on just being Iowa considering they followed McNutt/DJK who while not NFL caliber were at least pretty good college WRs. With the only upperclassmen WRs being non-D1 transfers you hope it gets better.

Criminal part is that this comes when Iowa actually had real talent at QB with Shimonek, Sokol, Rudock, Beathard, and Stanley all having good careers here/elsewhere/spending time in NFL camps.

It generated 17 points, mostly.

That ain’t consistently beating many good teams.
