I think he would agree his football character wasn't the best at Iowa. He didn't always work the hardest and from what I heard liked to party a bit too much.
While it may have hurt him in the short term, as the article points out going where he did and to who he did ultimately gave him the opportunity to be the Pro Bowl level player that he is after only a couple years. I also think as he has gotten a few years older, he realized that his work ethic wasn't the best but he was given the foundation to carry it on into his pro career.
If Iowa coddles him and isn't hard on him or honest with him, maybe he never learns that he has to outwork everyone. There is a reason his production wasn't all that great in college and is off the charts now.
This is who Ferentz and Iowa are. I don't always like it or agree with it, but there is zero doubt they aren't in the long run trying to do what is best for the kids they coach.
