That was an all time stupid loss by Purdue. Missed a free throw to go up 4 and then commits an absurd foul on purpose with too much time on the clock while up three.

Edwards got by the guy and would have had a look, chose to make a terrible pass instead.

You could tell that was a stupid play to run when Painter was drawing it up. I wondered why the fuck he was calling for a corner three on the clipboard.

You have to go full court in 5.9 seconds. Give the ball to Edwards and set a screen for him.

Cline was covered up tight anyways. Unlikely to get a clean shot at it there.

He’s gassed and the only jumper he’s made in a while banked in, but that was a horrible choice to throw that pass, and worse execution of the pass.

Go back and look at what Painter was drawing up. Edwards was running the play he called. Even if he makes the pass the guy would have been doubled and not had much of a look.

Correct. No way was he getting a decent shot off.

I wonder if they thought there woulda be enough time to flip it back to Edwards coming hard down the sideline

Exactly. Terrific game, too bad they couldn’t get a shot up.

They had over 5 seconds. Get the ball to half court. Call a timeout with 3 seconds. That’s an eternity to run a play.

Painter kirked up the clock management late. The intentional foul was prerty early.

That will haunt them for a long time. I don't even think Painter wanted that foul but his assistant came sprinting up to him telling him to do it and he sort of freaked out and told his players to foul without really thinking. Then the assistant was standing there explaining to him while Painter looked bewildered.

Simply awful luck and a complete fluke play though. Purdue gets them to miss the second free throw, is still up 2 and the ball goes flying into the backcourt. Virginia is somehow able to track it down and fire a one handed pass to a big man who hits a floater with .2 on the clock when he releases it over the fingertips of a 7'3'' player.

Another .2 seconds or a couple of inches and Purdue looks brilliant.

I have always hated the "foul when you are up 3" strategy though. If you play it out the percentage for last second three point attempts is something like under 30% if I remember correctly and at worst you tie.

At best you foul and they hit 2 free throws and you now have to get the ball inbounded cleanly under their hoop and hope you then can hit 2 free throws and still giving the other team some sort of shot for a tie or the win unless there is less than .3 on the clock.

Too much that can go wrong as you saw tonight. Purdue is lucky that Virginia didn't have a shot for the win in regulation.

The other thing is Purdue’s guys had the natural instinct to chase down the court when you don’t need possession and can’t adford to leave anyone open there

Didn’t Jerome miss the second one on purpose?

I get the reasoning behind the foul but 1) it was way too early and 2) Virginia murdered them on the boards the entire half so they left themselves open to that type of tip back.

From the opposite camera angle it also looked like 3 of Purdue’s players just stood around waiting for the clock to expire.

I don't think he did and that would have been insane if he did. There was a ton of time that even if he hits both they are down 1, can immediately foul and have about 5 seconds to get off a shot to tie the game.

Yeah that’s part of why I thought it was too early. If you’re going to do the foul it needs to be the end of the game not a full possession ahead
