Nate was a decent QB glowed up by Iowa having the worst five-year run of QBs in the history of college football.
He was better than decent. Iowa not playing in a conference title game or two in his time as starter does tarnish his legacy a bit.

he was 5th, 5th, and 8th (actually his best number though) in the B10 in Y/A. 4th, 5th, and 7th in QB rating. So in any given year he was roughly the 5th-6th best QB in the douche. Like I said, decent.

absolutely

and for any of Nate’s flaws, Kirk and his son have shown us that it can get many times worse
The most fascinating thing was watching the Petras shit show in 2020/2021 and all of us saying "well, there is no way it could get any worse!" and subsequently having 2022 and especially 2023 be so much worse.

It's actually sort of impressive how bad it got. You have to have complete incompetence mixed with some spectacular bad luck to even approach those levels. You would think at least 1 of the 9 QB's that came through the program during the time would be decent by chance, but somehow each one was worse than the last.

Spencer Petras
Alex Padilla
Joey Labas
Deuce Hogan
Carson May
Cade McNamara
Fat Marco
Bacon Hill
James Resar

All of them complete fucking trash. Labas the only one with a very very small argument he was just "bad" and not total trash. The rest collectively the worst group of QB's at the Power 4/5 level in the modern era.

The truly impressive thing though is Kirk Ferentz and his Iowa Hawkeyes somehow managed to win an average of 9 games per year during that stretch.

the real marker is how the rest of CFB felt when they were available

Petras - not entirely terrible at Utah State but racked up a lot of numbers playing catchup in blowouts
Padilla - third-string at SMU
Labas - pretty bad at CMU other than lighting up an FCS opponent from a conference w/ a lower scholarship than the rest of FCS
Hogan - fourth-string at Kentucky and then at New Mexico State and terrible in his limited games at NMSU. EDIT: He was actually decent in an upset of the FCS #5 team last week playing for Nicholls. Never mind that he's in his 6th year of college and his 4th school. Or that Nicholls was 4–8 last year in a one-bid league.
May - third-string or worse at Wyoming, was third-string at best at Abilene Christian before they moved him to TE
McNamara - 25 years old and splitting #1 reps for an ETSU FCS team that went 7–5 and lost its coach last year
Lainez - backup QB to a redshirt freshman for a 6–6 FCS Elon team
Hill - won the job at Utah Tech, was fucking terrible before getting hurt as his FCS team went 1–11
Resar - transferred to some D2 school called UNC Pembroke and is now playing tight end at a JUCO

But even Kirk Ferentz can drift out of his comfort zone and put his foot in his mouth as he did recently when he joked to the media about the possibility of having to use Deuce Hogan at quarterback against Nebrantska in the regular season finale.

“If it was Deuce, with all due respect to Deuce, I might have stayed in Iowa City,” Ferentz said.

It's almost unbelievable, especially when Lester comes in and immediately finds 2 guys who are far better than any of those guys and one of them is a walk on.

As usual, this boils down to semantics. How you define decent. What does decent even mean? Is it average? Better than average? He was drafted by a pro team. Do decent quarterbacks get drafted?

They supplemented those QBs with a mostly horrific set of WRs that all transferred out at some point.

That’s what happens when you make an meathead offensive lineman responsible for QB evaluation, recruitment, and development.

Updates!

McNamara - split snaps early for a 7–5 FCS team. "won" the job when other guy got hurt. later got hurt. Was third-best of the three ETSU QBs with 30+ passes (6.9 YPA and 7-6 TD/INT while other primary guy was 8.2 YPA and 9-2) and second-best in his family (brother did 8.2 YPA and 2-1 TD/INT).

Labas - 8.0 YPA and 20-13 TD/INT over two seasons at Central Michigan including 8.9 YPA this year. went 21/25 in bowl but somehow stayed under 200 yards in 34–7 loss to Northwestern. Game manager, you might say. Basically played in the most run-heavy scheme in nation that wasn't triple option or didn't use the QB as a runner.

Hogan - 5.3 YPA and 4-5 TD/INT. Team was 1–6 when he went out for year. Backup led them to a 3–2 finish with 7.2 YPA and 6-1 TD/INT.

Lainez - 8/20 for year on a 6–6 FCS team before transferring

It's mind boggling how inept QB recruiting and coaching was under Bridawg.

It's as if they said "hey, let's sign a bunch of scrubs and make them worse."

Except they were actually trying to be good. Fuckin retards.

Remember when a couple of Iowa reporters and way too many dipshit fans thought Tony Racciopici or however you spell it would be a legit option for QB coach?

That guy is the biggest fraud on earth.

Bridawg is a disease that never needs to get near a field again.

We have absolutely seen worse. Maybe not from the coaching staff of our beloved Hawkeyes, but certainly in the general sense.
Like that time Doug stole 26’s bf by getting him drunk and sucking his dick even though he didn’t really like him?
