I loved seeing all those sad Minnesota fans in their faggot P.J. Fleck costumes (size smedium pullover and burgundy colored skinny jeans) leave Kinnick depressed because all their hopes and dreams were crushed.

Hats off to Brian for calling his best game of the year. A lot of misdirection and getting the ball to the playmakers in space.

It’s weird what happens when you get your most explosive player a bunch of touches in the first half....and throw the ball downfield. Crazy!!

Iowa is now 3-0 at Kinnick under Ferentz against teams who entered 9-0 or better (4-0 if you drop it down to 8-0 or better).

The defense is giving up 12.4 ppg, its lowest single-season mark since 1960.

Today was only the fifth day ever where both Iowa and Iowa State beat ranked AP opponents on the same day.

It’s not like Iowa State hasn’t been presented with a significant number of opportunities.

Brian called a great first half, where iowa ran the ball 16 times and Stanley had 10 passing attempts - Iowa scored 20 points.

In the second half, with a massive lead, against an explosive offense where you want to shorten the game, Iowa inexplicably abandoned a RB averaging 7 YPC. Brian called 17 pass plays (including sacks and scrambles) and ran the ball only 8 times - coincidentally only scored 3 points.

That first half was exactly what Iowa's offense should be, in the second half they got way too cute and it nearly cost them the game.

Hope Goodson's injury wasn't serious, he's going to be a fun one to watch the next few years.

Minnesota was also way more aggressive with the blitz in the second half. Their only 3 and out was where they tried to run the clock out. They moved the ball on each drive but took a sack on 3rd down.

Minnesota also had a drive in both quarters where they chewed up a ton of clock.

Moving the ball isn't the objective, scoring points is. Why would Minnesota chewing up clock change would Iowa should be doing offensively? Especially since it was working and with a lead.

I like Fat Nate for what he is and should be - a game manager. He's not the kind of QB you build an offense around. Iowa should build their offense around the run game and let Nate complement it, that's what they did in the 1st half. If you build the offense around an inconsistent QB, the offense will be inconsistent too, that's what you saw in the second half (and for most of the season).

And it drives me fucking mad watching Nate take those deep sacks on 3rd down. Any defensive coordinator is going to come after Nate on 3rd down - Brian should know that and draw up a play that is easy to execute against the blitz. Would have loved to see a RB screen call in the 2nd half when Minny started blitzing to slow down the pass rush.

I’m as excited as any single person on this forum about the win....but that last drive in the first half came dangerously close to fucking up our afternoon yesterday.

Minnesota will be fine. When you’ve gone 58 years without a trip to the Rose Bowl, another few decades won’t matter much.

Dammit that was fun.

At least in Central Iowa, we have to wade through a lot of dumb bullshit because Iowa State fans love mediocrity so completely. THAT, right there, is what a true home field advantage looks like. Undefeated and one-loss, highly-ranked teams keep coming in and keep getting sent home with a foot up their ass. Kinnick is an advantage on a national scale, regularly rewriting the top of the polls.

Whatever that Soviet looking shithole in Ames is, it ain’t that.

I really wish we could upgrade Koerner. He’s completely lost out there.

He's not fast enough to help much on deep balls.

He's a decent tackler

I really hope they open up the competition again as Merriweather and others are going to be better than him, but the shitty thing is Koerner might be entrenched there for another 2 years.

Because Iowa had 1 1/2 possessions in the 3rd quarter and 1 1/2 possessions in the 4th quarter. That’s why Minnesota chewing up clock matters. On the 1 possession in the 4th Iowa kicked a field goal. The other 2 ‘possessions’ in the 4th they were trying to run out the clock and they took a knee.

They punted twice in the second half from the Minnesota side of the field.

Koerner has been better than Merriweather as soon as the change was made early this year. I hope Merriweather gets better but he was lost as fuck when he played.

Koerner was lost and overmatched yesterday. They have to at least explore if they have a better option next year.

Even if he does stay, that is likely ok as long as Doyle isn't the starter. If not, that is a couple of glaring holes in the defense. Hoping that Jestin Jacobs is the real deal and can play next year.

Iowa only had nine possessions, one of which was two kneel downs. That seems pretty low.

At the game it really just looked like Minnesota's receivers were better, but Iowa typically had good coverage. Hoping to watch the game in 60 whenever that happens this week to see what TV shows. I was really impressed with Minnesota's QB and receivers though. I think that's the best team Iowa has played this year.

While it can be frustrating to watch Tommy Soybeans lining up at safety for Iowa, if there's anyone to whom I would give a leash of infinite length regarding personnel decisions it's Phil Parker.

They tried and it got blown up for no gain.

As far as defensive backs go, Hankins was way worse than Koerner was yesterday. Minnesota has one of the better receiver groups in the country but he's been really bad since he came back from the hamstring injury.

Hankins is usually there in coverage but seems to allow the catch too easily without contesting. Yesterday they lost quite a few jumpballs to their big physical receivers. I wish they would have done a better job of separating them from the ball instead of going for the ball.

decent at best. He’s not bad, he just really looks to hit someone and gets caught looking in the backfield too much, without the speed to recover. He also tries to tackle high way to much. That’s said he’s a first year starting soph so we will see.

Iowa ran less partially because Goodson got dinged twice. They were looking at him on the sideline a few times.

It’s way too late for this but if Nate had the confidence to simply shuffle up in the pocket a step or two he would have half as many sacks.

That whiff on the interception sure was something.
I have quasi-insider info on Koerner, and I think his performance has deteriorated in recent weeks as playing virtually every snap at that position has taken a physical toll on him. Pretty beat up. The missed INT is a puzzler tho

One of his shoulders is clearly shot from seeing the brace he is wearing. Usually you see those braces and it means postseason surgery

I was telling my friend from work who went to the game with me how well Goodson was doing picking up blocks. One he literally picked the guy up off the ground. The other he drove deep behind Stanley giving him time to survey the field. I agree that Stanley sometimes backs up to far into the area rushers are being blocked into trying to keep pressure out of his face. Frustrating for sure with those big losses.

I also wondered, there were multiple times where they had 2 TE in motion creating an unbalanced line and running the opposite way. It resulted in a few nice runs. I wonder if getting that on tape they'll use that as a decoy to actually roll Stanley towards the TEs after a fake hand off to throw to a TE? Get the defense to bite on the run and that could end up a very nice play.
