The introduction of “The (random sponsor) Bowl” has done some work to make them feel smaller. Bowl games are supposed to be named after some random object of regional importance. None of these title deals can be worth very much in terms of actual brand awareness.
No doubt. The region-specific name, or at least keeping a permanent name like the Holiday Bowl, gives them a better history and sense of place. The sponsor-only ones all run together, especially if sponsors hop cities. the Pop-Tarts Bowl apparently used to be the Cheez-It Bowl, not to be confused with the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl or the Cheez-It Bowl that is currently the Rate Bowl and was formerly a bunch of other names out in Arizona.
Yea, there are more bowls but I don't think the Alamo or Sun Bowl or other mid tier bowls are any different now in the new setup than they were. I'm old enough to recall the 90s bowls setup and I agree they "felt" bigger but the teams had mediocre records than too. The Rose Bowl obviously has a completely different feel to how it was.
The 1996 Citrus Bowl featured 11-1 Ohio State against 10-1 Tennessee. But that was to my point earlier, there was a clear pecking order in the conference bowl selection. Now you’re sending your 5th or 6th best teams to that game. I remember when Iowa got the invite to Orlando after the 2004 season and what that symbolized back then.
Remember the half hour previews for each bowl that ESPN used to run during the day when you’d be home on Christmas break? It would be a host, some analyst and then the corporate suits. They’d give some highlights and a preview while mixing in full segments of all the wonderful things to do in San Antonio and how wonderful the sponsor was.

I think at some point ESPN sort of quit trying with storytelling for most of these games. Look at some older broadcasts. They introduce the game. They talk about storylines. They show all the starters. They seem interested in what is in front of them.
