Why do we coach offense and defense with completely different philosophies? The defense is simple, nothing terribly challenging, but they do it well and aim to force other teams to make mistakes.

You suggested that perhaps the reason Iowa doesn't get elite athletes on offense is because the offense has been so terrible. So, using that logic, why doesn't Iowa get elite players on defense? If the overall success of the unit dictates the quality of athlete a team can recruit, then why doesn't Iowa bring in a handful of 4 and 5 star athletes on defense every year? After all, very few schools have had the defensive success Iowa has had the past 25 years.

The problem is that Iowa still ranked outside the top 80 in yards per play last season. That's entirely a function of them lacking anything that resembles a consistent medium to deep passing game. They were extremely efficient last year in red zone scoring and short yardage, which was great to see, and the running game is consistent and fixed now.

because from the beginning I clearly stated skill positions. Most of our highly ranked offensive players are linemen, or the occasional tight end. And most programs don’t utilize a tight end like we do, so it’s not valued as highly by other schools.
