A lot of people cannot seem to separate Alford being a scumbag from the fact that they are both similarly shitty coaches.

Fran’s two best teams in his time at Iowa imploding the way that they did was more frustrating than anything from the Alford era IMO.

I have no issue with anyone choosing Fran as the better coach (at Iowa) of the two, but acting like it is a runaway is ridiculous.

Yeah, watching those two teams "implode" (and still make the tourney) was so much worse than supporting a serial rapist by trying to tell the girl to pray about it and getting embarrassed by Northwestern State.

The Northwestern State thing was brutal, and obviously Alford’s scandals were horrendous and the guy is trash, but that wasn’t the question.

Things have definitely changed since JB replaced MG. It has gotten 10x worse. I don't really follow you but the defensive numbers on MG's teams weren't as bad as you remember.

MG got abused by the top level PGs but he actually played solid position defense against the majority of the teams they played. bohannon isn't capable of doing that against anyone. Fran couldn't find a smaller/slower/weaker PG than bohannon if he tried so I feel confident it will only be better without JB.

The defense under Fran has been fine until the last 3 years. They also took pretty good care of the ball until the last 2 years.

Alford’s teams turned the ball over all the time, couldn’t make free throws and generally shit themselves once they got up by 12 or more points on the road. Fran can’t help but to fall behind by 12 on the road.

The Big Ten has been objectively much stronger throughout Fran's tenure than it was during Alford's. They also play more conference games.

For me, his undoing was that after Horner-Brunner-Josh-What's-His-Name (who was top 75 then flaked out), the only quality talent he landed was Tyler Smith. Arguably, Fran's 17-19 classes have been better than Alford's last three.

Fran: C+ recruiter, C+ in-game coach, A player motivator.

If he keeps landing at least one top 150 kid a year, he gets a bump to B- recruiter. He tends to get results one notch down from the talent level of his roster.

Runs a clean program, keeps the best in-state kids heading to Iowa City, and, with the exception of last year, has been respectable but not relevant. That will probably keep him a job at least until his kids graduate.

They had a former Mc Donald's AA who scored 18 per game the previous year. An all conference player who played in the NBA for a decade. 3 top 40 recruits and a couple other top 125 or 150. Plus a top 75 guy that he redshirted. The were preseason top 10 in the country.

Then they went 5-11 in the Big Ten.

Then Alford seemed to quit on recruiting and brought in guys like Ben Rand for a couple years.
