When he does a game, just as when Bobby Knight does, he spends maybe 25% of the time commentating on the game. I was watching Syracuse/Michigan the other night and Dan Dakich was already ripping on Iowa (made a couple of cracks on the Cedar Rapids Airport and Iowa Fans). I get it, he does it to get people fired up, but if I were Iowa, I'd be a bit pissed with this, not too mention ESPN puts their "I don't give a shit" announcing crew on Big Ten Football games that don't matter - BIG should just step in and put those games on the Big Ten Network.

I have close people to me that have worked and been around him for years and I've never heard anything but him being just the greatest person. I'm a Dicky V fan.

I met him at a restaurant in Florida right before covid. Chatted with him for about ten minutes or so and he was just the nicest guy ever. Talked a lot about his work with kids and cancer. I helped him send an email to Michael Irvin (proofread, etc, lol). He likes Fran a lot but at the time he couldn't understand how their defense could be so bad. Can't imagine that has changed a whole lot.

I met Dick Vitale at a grocery store a few years ago. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

Once upon a time long ago I came across an Iowa/NC State hoops game at the Great Alaska Shootout on the TV. I don't remember what channel. Maybe Big 10 Network? According to Google this game would've been on 11/29/86. We were ranked 10th and NC State was ranked 17th. Anyway, I started watching and it took me like 10 minutes to realize that Dick Vitale was the color man on the broadcast. He wasn't the Dick Vitale we all know now. He was fairly quiet and calm and not flamboyant at all. I don't know when he decided to be like that but apparently it wasn't his entire career. And that is how you tell a great fucking story

Friday, one of our vendors took me out to lunch to the Vine in Coralville. They had all the TVs on BTN. They were showing an Ohio State at Indiana game from 10ish years ago. Aaron Craft was playing. Victor Oladipo, Zeller, Watford and fucking Will Sheehey. No sound, no idea what year but Indiana was ranked top 10, Ohio State was top 15ish.

I assumed since it was an Ohio State Classic they won, but every possession the coaches, players and crowd were super intense. I couldn’t stop watching. I remember looking forward to non Iowa games like that. I had no idea Michigan State and Illinois even played yesterday.

I want to hate Aaron Craft, Will Sheehey or Brad Davison again. I don’t want find out a player I hate like Caleb Grill is still playing for Missouri 5 years after I hated him as a junior at Iowa State.

I have no idea how college basketball gets that back.

The only chance it ever gets it back is they have some semblance of binding contracts and immediate transfer is eliminated. You can't build hatred or loyalty and especially consistency without it.

Iowa State this year is the perfect example. 10-ish years ago I could name a bunch of their players and that was even when Hoiberg/Otz almost single handedly started this grad transfer hired gun nonsense. They were ranked but not all that high.

Now they are somewhere in the Top 5 and I watched an entire game of their team (plus parts of a couple others) and gun to my head I can't name a single player other than Lipsey, and that should say something.
