I think it's too bad that D1 schools in the same state aren't going to play anymore, but it's the reality of where college basketball is going.

That is where college basketball has been for a long time.

Except it really isn't. There were only a handful of MTEs until the mid-2000s, most conferences were playing 16 games (and didn't have 100 teams), there was the ACC/Big Ten thing but not the Big East one, etc. I actually think the schedule flexibility is a bigger thing, you don't see many teams playing non-conference home/homes anymore.

And before one of you starts in about football, I'm one of the few ISU fans who thinks the Cy-Hawk football game should go away as well. The dynamic in CFB is much different; strength of schedule is virtually meaningless. Iowa doesn't gain anything by playing the game, and ISU needs a better chance for a win on their schedule to make a bowl game.

They could play 2 out of 4 years and accommodate the 7 game home schedules. That would be plenty.

UNI fans, by and large, are idiots. At least the five who really care. They thought playing a neutral site was below them, and if they refused to show up in Des Moines, the home/home would come back.

I still think UNI fucked themselves on this by tethering themselves to Drake. Drake is a zero-value program no one on earth wants to bother playing. UNI is at least a quality opponent.

I think UNI ends up with a series of some kind with ISU, and maybe occasional trips to Iowa City, if anything.

I fucking hate non-conference games in basketball or football that only benefit one team and put the other in a no win situation.

Drake is fine if they want to come to Carver every few years. They are no different from any buy game and Iowa is going to beat them 95% of the time.

UNI on the other hand has no real benefit. If we are being honest, that is because they can actually be a good team every few years and their style of play is horrendous to watch and leads to close games that they can pull out through grinding flailing flopping bullshit. If Iowa loses to them, it is an embarrassment. If they win, well, they were supposed to win.

Iowa State in football is the definition of that for Iowa. If we are being honest, the reason isn't like UNI where Iowa State is good every few years, but that Iowa State is so consistently terrible and even if they are good it wouldn't change the national perspective that a win over them means nothing. They are consistently one of the bottom teams in the country, they play above their level while too many times Ferentz and his conservative style when Iowa is only mediocre allows Iowa State to hang around in a close game and pull out wins they shouldn't. If Iowa loses to them, it is an embarrassment. If they win, well, they were supposed to win.

There is no reason that Iowa and Iowa State should both want the series over. Iowa should want it over so they can pursue a neutral site game every other year with a Power 5 opponent or get a home and home game against a Power 5 opponent.

I thought the timing of the event made sense. Students are usually usually gone (although they don't come to home games) and it makes sense to try and give the Metro area fans a close game.

I wonder if Iowa says sure Drake we will play you but it will either be at home in Carver or at the Well in Des Moines?

I do like the idea of Iowa playing in DSM. Perhaps a three for one deal with Drake (with the Drake home game being at WF)would be agreeable to both ADs?

Iowa should be looking at having power 5 game alternating between Sioux City and Des Moines.

LOL that Iowa should promote anything Sioux City. if they want to get paid to do the Sioux Falls thing again maybe but arranging something in Sioux City would be dumb. It's a declining part of the state.

I'm sure that is the reason, but maybe they can work around that. Moving to 20 conference games stole away a home game, so this was the logical step to get one back. Perhaps they will figure out instead of a home game they can do as well out in Sioux City given how much they pay out.

If Iowa wants to pursue neutral site games with power 5 schools, Chicago should be the most likely site, not Sioux City.

The biggest thing is 20 conference games changes a lot. That gives you only 10 non-conference games.

Big East game many years
November Tournament Games (2-3 regular and usually 1 or 2 play in)

That is 7 games right there and 5 of them are against Power 5 or high major teams.

It gives you 3 more games to play with. Those are going to be home games in comfortable win type scenarios. Maybe you have a high profile game in the years you don't play a Big East team.

I would love for them to have at least 1 more good game, but after looking at it the reality is they are all likely home buy games.
