The first half two foul thing is nonsensical, hard headed thinking.

You want your best players to play the most minutes possible, subject to needed rest. Whether those minutes come in the first half or second half matters not.

Had Iowa shot better, hit more free throws and played better interior defense, and cut their turnovers in half, they would have been in this ball game until the end.

This. By the time it was ready for those guys to come back in, Iowa is out of the game.

Iowa was out of the game when they got off the bus. Sorry, truth.

Under that strategy, a player is in "foul trouble" after a single first half foul. I get sitting them for a while, but it should be more of a feel for the game thing than an automatic thing. It has long been one of the most frustrating things about McCaffery's coaching IMO.

Fran's teams have got their shit pushed in by Izzo's, and will continue do so. The type of player Fran prefers in his system can't handle the physicality of the kind of player Izzo prefers in his system. Also, Fran's teams just aren't bump-and-grind, pound-it-out tough. We've seen that again and again.

This team will find its groove again, lose it again, and hopefully find it again in February. The early ranking was bogus, all based on beating an overhyped Oregon. Hopefully .500 in conference and the bubble.

And East Lansing will always be a rape room while Fran is on the sideline.

No offense, but you are kind of making stuff up here. Yeah, Fran is 3-12 against MSU, but the vast majority have been competitive games. Even last year's crappy Iowa team lost only by a 96-93 score. Three years ago, Fran beat a top 5 MSU team twice in a span of two weeks. The last real blowout by MSU in the series was March 9, 2012, a 17 point loss in the Big Ten Tournament. Between then and now, there have been a bunch of close losses, several of them in overtime.

There wasn’t a lot more to do regarding the fouls. Yes, you could play guys with two but then you basically just prolong the pain and we are talking about being “mentally weak” or a “collapse” at the end because guys fouled out.

He played Kriener with two. Cook played pretty much the whole half. I would have kept Connor in the floor with two because Jordan couldn’t do anything to disrupt entry passes. Dailey was absolutely horrible.

One plus was that I thought we showed more toughness this game. We were just thoroughly outplayed.

I don't think anyone was upset with the effort. They played their asses off.

I'm doubling down. Sure, some close games. But, 3-12. Eventually, Fran's kids get worn down and pushed around by Izzo's. Their shit pushed in -- not in the difference, but in the manner.

I think the bolded part is generally true. Fran's overall philosophy of the game is different than Izzo's and a lot of people. It's why I love Fran. he's a 70's, hands-off D, free-flow O guy.

I thought it was a bad decision to pull Moss in the 1st half when he did; it was one of those rare segments when his shot was on and he had some confidence when no one else was doing anything. He's been largely worthless so I say keep him in and use him when he's actually productive.

Joe Wieskamp was being asked to guard guys that he shouldn’t have to be guarding. He did about as well as he could have done, but that was never going to work out. Riley Till and Cook are absolutely clueless about rotating in the zone.

Interior defense was brutal last night. The average distance of MSU’s baskets had to be around 3 feet.

I looked this up and you're right - for all those saying "What did you expect, it's Michigan State?"

This is Fran's worse loss since his 2nd year here. This was hardly a foregone conclusion, particularly for an Iowa team that (while overrated in the top 25) shouldn't be awful. A 20+ conference loss is bad, no matter who you're playing.

It’s stupid to ask Fran to shorten the bench and then get pissed when Till has to play.

I have more complaints than I can list, but here is my primary question: Going into the game, what was the plan on offense? I mean, what was the objective of the offense they were running? Seems to me like they simply dribble aimlessly around the perimeter for 20-22 seconds, and then go into panic mode, with a resulting shitty shot.

Just my observation.

There were sections of this game that were unbearable to watch. Just horrible.

Well it didn’t help that Garza had his worst game ever. He had plenty of good looks.

That second foul of his came after an awful shot that was compounded by an awful reach.

Yeah, nothing worse than hitting shots. Who gives a fuck if it's a long 2. Open shots are tough to come by. I'd rather have someone shoot an in rhythm, wide open 20-footer than worry about being behind the line and throwing his rhythm off. Maybe he should pass up those shots, let the shot clock run down and we can give it to bohannon to break his defender down and get in the lane.

bohannon actually got into the lane yesterday pretty well because they were overplaying him so much. Too bad he missed easy shots.

I love that style of basketball too, but I often question if that's ever going to really work in a league that is coached and officiated like the big ten.

He's shooting 36% from the field so far this year, king James. Career is low 40s fg %. Doesn't get to the foul line. He's a streaky chucker. You're retarded.

Can would be great in a 70s, hands free, free flow league. Too bad one doesn't exist. The NBA has transitioned to that but now it's so watered down with marginally talented players putting up video game numbers that a die hard NBA guy like Doug doesn't even like to watch it.

Playing a hands off, pussy brand of basketball with weak players isn't going to cut it in the big ten.

yeah, well, life's like, full of trade-offs, man. It is a conundrum, to be sure. I have a weird fixation on the problem. It's like I can't let go of my idealism on the subject.

I don't know much basketball Xs & Os, but given Fran's philosophy as outlined above we seem bad at moving the ball, we seem to be like the worst at reversing it in the whole world. He runs that motion set on a miniscule section of the court into as much traffic as possible. Maybe it's b/c no one can break an opponent down off the dribble (which gets back to all the contact allowed on D, I guess I could argue).

In Fran's offense, players run around screens and catch passes in the 18-20 foot area a lot. It's weird, because you can't really shoot a contested two from there and there's not enough space to make an entry pass into the post. You're not catching a pass in an area of the floor where you can be in triple threat position. I've never understood it and I don't like it.

We will have to see how this plays out but I will admit I was a little concerned about our shooting coming into the year given that we had heard they spent the entire off-season lifting weights. The kids only have X hours to work on stuff each week and it seems like the focus was always on getting stronger.

I understand being disappointed in the Wisconsin loss. Don’t really get being pissed at this one. Only chance to win was going to be to get hot from outside as the refs are never going to call shit underneath when the game is still in the balance up there. Iowa’s only win up there since 1993 was with Uthoff and Jok going off from the floor.

Having said all that I will repeat what I said after the Wisconsin game. Cook really needs to accept that he can’t shoot.
He hasn't been that good at driving to the basket lately either.

I thought that we actually tried to get to the rim yesterday. Moss was being more aggressive. We were isolating cook.

There were two plays in particular that I remember, one with cook driving left baseline and one with Connor driving the right side of the lane, both were completely fucking chucked with full body contact and there was no call.

Garza absorbed a ton of contact as well.
