Unfortunately Fran is unable to coach defense and recruits point guards. The rest is does pretty well.
I'm not quite on the fire Fran train yet but obviously if they play like that in many more games I'll get there. It would be a perfect ending for Fran to finally bring in a guard in Toussaint that looks like he wouldn't be overmatched athletically right as he is shown the door.
A competent PG alone would fix many of the defensive issues. Who knows if Toussaint is that guy but I have a hard time believing a freshman sees significant minutes with bohannon and Connor already on the roster next year.

Basically where I'm at. I love Fran but if we don't make the tourney then fuck it time to move on. But lol Barta ain't doing shit.
Why do we love Fran? What has he done for iowa basketball? Because he’s a better coach over Lick and Alford?
I mean yeah. That alone is enough for me. But I’ll admit I’m getting tired of not only losing, but not even having a fucking chance on the road.

Big ten schedule was brutal to start but that excuse only holds water for so long. I would somewhat be OK with the losses if they hadn’t just rolled over and took it in the ass. That’s getting old.
This is how I feel as well.

A well coached team does not take the shot Dailey took at the end of the first half.

Fran is going to have to coach for his job the rest of the way. No way he survives if they miss the tournament again. He is neither likable enough nor previously successful enough to earn a pass at the shit that has been on the floor the last 3 years.
I hope this is true. At some point, one would think that pride and embarrassment would create an incentive to fix the obvious problems with his coaching approach.

It's amazing to me how much of this roster is just filler. Assuming this is Cook's last year, Garza and Weiskamp are the only guys worth talking about.
Absent a consistent mid-range jump shot, Cook ain't goin' nowhere

Not going to the NBA isn't the same as staying at Iowa

Win Sunday. If not season is done.
FWIW, KenPom has Iowa losing the next 4, and starting the conference season 1-11. But then finishing strong winning 5 out of the last 8.

I think at this point the only reasonable thing for Iowa basketball fan to do is accept mediocrity. Fran isn't changing, after subbing in four or 5 Guys continually in the 1st half and then watching leads disappear or deficits grow, he still doesn't get it

Connor sucks and so does his old man. Fire him. Get someone that will actually coach defense, be able to recruit a decent PG, and hire a decent strength coach.

Connor doesn't suck, but if he's unwilling to shoot, his game pretty much consists of moving the ball side to side.

Connors biggest issue right now is that he’s mainly playing minutes with the group of non scorers. For the love of god, play him over Jordan with the starters. Our defense gets way better and the ball moves more.

Jordan just isn’t good this year.

Connor at least tries hard on the defensive end but he's hampered by his lack of quickness. Last night late in the shot clock he got burned back door for an easy layup. I expect better fundamentals from a coach's kid

It shouldn’t have happened but that was a breakdown in a late clock scramble situation. Jordan gets repeated abused every single possession and the entire defensive scheme breaks down as a result.

Look at the end of the game Saturday. Connor is able to stay in front of a quick guard while also staying vertical. Pushes him away from the basket and blocks the go ahead shot.

You can be okay with a bunch of below-average athletic players if they are at least fundamentally sound. Iowa isn't fundamentally sound at either end of the Court

I just want to make the tourney as often as we don't make it. That's it. No other expectations.

I'll bet Gustafson would score 50 on this defense.

Without dmofr, it feels like our defensive efficiency is inversely related to the number of minutes Baer plays.

Baer isn't close to the liability he was last year when he was playing SG and SF but he's still not good.

It all starts with by far the worst defensive PG in the league. Add in 4 other average to below average defenders and no shot blocker and you get Iowa.

Baer got beat back door by a front court player last night. He just doesn’t know how to pay attention for more than 1 minute at a time.

Iowa basketball sucks balls. Pretty much has for a few DECADES now.

At some point people need to accept reality. We’re a shitty hoops school.
Pretty much.

Iowa basketball has a continental divide pre- and post- January 19, 1993.
1999.

This ignores the Woolridge years and most of the Settles decade.
Disagree. From 1980 until Chris Street passed, the goal was always the Final Four. After that night, even in the Woolridge/Settles years, everyone knew the ceiling was the Sweet Sixteen.

Purdue putting full court pressure on bohannon with Eastern worked wonders for them. He would dribble so quickly up the court to the right side and it was screwing up the rhythm nearly every possession. I would be surprised if every team we play for the rest of the season doesn't try something similar as long as we're going to have him bringing the ball up the court because he had no idea how to handle it.

No.
The only season this might have been true was '95-96. Almost every year between '79 and '93 Iowa was expected to contend for a douche crown.

As many contended at the time, bohannon was at his ceiling as a freshman.

Connor is also limited defensively (in a different way), and is not a strong shooter (as many observed when he was in high school), but would probably be the better full-time pg.

The question is whether Fran would limit the minutes of his third-year starter and run his kid for 35min a game as the pg.

The answer is no, he wouldn't. We're going to be swearing at the TV for a good while longer....

96-97 Iowa finished second in the douche to a cheating Clem Haskins. In 99 they beat Kansas on the road and very nearly defeated eventual national champ uconn to go to the elite 8.

You are wrong.

they were an 8th seed in 96-97 and finished unranked, and cost the head coach his job.

I will concede the freakish and emotional overperformance of 1999.

And probably underseeded given that they very nearly beat Kentucky.

Its much easier to accomplish this when you have a pg like Woolridge. Purdue could do something similar this year.
