With as much time as there was, I was hoping they’d set up bohannon for a three pointer, but do a pump fake kinda like the earlier one where he made three free throws. You knew they were going to be all over him. Easier said than done though.

Still need to play better much earlier. Been out of sync for awhile now despite the heroics.

Why was bohannon even in the game and why would he be on cowin?

Kreiner has to leave Fernando because bohannon got torched. I say this with sincerity, and it pains me, but dailey or Connor should have been in for defense and bohannan on the bench.
Why does it pain you? It's the smart thing to do. Dailey is by far the best option. He's pretty quick laterally and has length. It happens all the time at the end of halves. There will be only one defensive possession left and Fran will leave bohannon and/or Garza of the floor. He's just a dumbfuck sometimes.
It’s pains me because I dislike them so much

I have a hard time believing that is what they drew up.
Ummm, Fran isn’t exactly known for drawing up plays. Have you ever watched the end of a half / game he has coached?

I haven't posted in like 5 years, but need to tell you how big of a dumb fuck you are for that comment. Fran draws up fantastic out of bounds plays and has since the second he got here.
FFS. Out of bounds plays under the hoop are not the same fucking thing as end of the half / game shots. Some coaches draw up plays with multiple options if the first isn’t there. My point is, Fran has never shown the ability to do that in those scenarios.

I’m surprised he even bothered to call a timeout.

This game sucked but I was pleased with how they fought back. Good team made a number of high degree of difficulty threes on us.

Moving on.

There were 7 seconds left. By the time they crossed the timeline there was roughly 5 seconds left.

There isn’t a whole lot to draw up there. It’s basically one option, if it’s not there shoot it. Ideally you have a guard, like Maryland, that can get all the way to the rim.

I was a little surprised Fran didn’t have Jordan inbound, throw it to Connor OOB and have Connor throw it back. Maryland wouldn’t have doubled Jordan if he was throwing it in initially.

I would have had one of the other four guys on the court at least set a ball screen

There was 30+ minutes of lickiter-esque offensive ineptitude and the Hawks had a chance to win it against a top 25 team. Last year this was a 25 point loss. I've still got a partial boner for these Hawks, L or not. This year's team has some fight.

I hope Fernando gets testicular torsion though.

Maryland also hit 3 or 4 shots as the shot clock was at 1. Now if a couple of the close outs would have been a little better maybe they don’t have an easy rhythm jumper.

But Maryland answered with a 3 almost every time Iowa got it to 5 or 6 until the last 4 minutes.

If Iowa continues to play defense like that they’ll be really tough down the stretch. The offense has been pretty meh since the first half of the Indiana game. They’re due to have a big game. bohannon, Garza and Wieskamp combined to go 3-23. Indiana is going to get pounded in the ass.
This is hopefully true but Garza has been playing like butt for awhile now.

Just saw the replay of the last shot by Moss and understand refs don’t want to decide a game but fuck that looked obvious

I understand officiating is a hard job, but if it’s a foul with 10 minutes to go in the first half, it’s a foul at the end of the game. But that’s always been a problem and probably always will be. Box out and this isn’t even an issue. Can we get Reggie Evans in to teach guys to rebound? Hell I don’t care if he also tells them to grab nuts.

That last play was awful. No ball screens or anything

The whole team was bad tonight but I still cannot stand Connors game. His BPM is second worst on the team to Dailey and he shoots 36%. It’s disgusting
I was amazed to see Connor splash three after three in warmups. Didn't think he had that in him, but I guess the whole "not being guarded" thing has something to do with it.

That was one of the most exasperating games I've ever seen in person. Horrible on offense mos of the night and yet somehow they climb back in it and even had the lead.

Played like shit for most of the game and still had a chance, so I'm not too upset. Now turn the page and run Indiana out of the gym on Friday.

That was the weirdest fucking game. Hideous offense for 25-30 minutes, no one playing well. Really good defense for a long time then tons of breakdowns. Most of the turnovers were just dumb plays. Can't make anything and then somehow they're right there to win it again.

Cook was weird all night. Super passive and caught spectating. I think he was rattled when he'd get it on the block to back down Fernando and couldn't move him at all. Garza was a mess. Joe was a mess until late. Moss was at least trying to make something happen when all was stagnant but just couldn't hit. Kriener's miss was obviously a catastrophe but that turnover on the fast break is all on Moss. He wasn't terrible.

Shit, Connor and Maishe scored 1 fewer point than Garza, Cook and Joe combined. Then on top of those 3, bohannon and Moss combine to go 6-21 from the field. And they still almost fucking won somehow.

They're the best rebounding team overall in the Big Ten but worst turnover differential team. Dead last in takeaways and 13th in turning it over. Pretty well rounded and solid everywhere else except they're 10th in 2P% which is surprising. They allow a lot of attempts from 3 but a low percentage.

Fernando only commits 3.4 fouls per 40 in conference but we have to attack him and try to get him in trouble. He's a monster. Cowan hasn't been an efficient scorer but he's a good creator and draws a lot of fouls. Wiggins and Ayala are 45% and 42% from 3 on 218 total attempts and 109 in 15 Big Ten games.

Last 5 Big Ten games away from home they've been much worse on offense though. Under 1 PPP in each. Defense took a solid step back also. They thumped Rutgers, Minnesota and Ohio State on the road early in the year and lost by only 2 at Purdue. Big road/home split the last month though.
This held up well.
-Our rebounding had been shaky at best lately, they've dominated this year. We killed them on the glass tonight and had our best offensive rebounding game of the Big Ten.
-They were dead last in the conference in forcing turnovers and way down nationally, we're top 5 in taking care of it and 67th in the country. We turn it over way above our norm and one of our worst games in a couple months.
-Cowan came in shooting 32% from 3 with about 2 makes per game and goes 5-10.
-Their 2P offense struggling and their two shooters hitting were about the only things from above that held true. Too bad our shooters missed so many open looks while theirs drilled theirs.

Part of it is Maryland being really fast to get back, but it would have been huge if Iowa could have turned those turnovers into points.

Oh well.

Joe had position, but then was either pushed or decided to jump right under the basket. I couldn’t really tell.

That Maryland team would always be a tough out v. a Fran team as they are so physical. Once in the first half (I think) Kreiner had a solid, textbook box-out of Fernando, and Fernando flat out threw Kreiner to the floor and got the O board which he either put back in or got fouled or something. I mean he just threw him down. No call.

This was just one of those nights. I can't remember Iowa ever playing three games in a row that went down to the last shot. The fact that they won two of the three, and one of those wins was on the road, is pretty damned fantastic. I think we're looking at a Sweet Sixteen team, or better.

The tournament is all about matchups.

It would be nice if Iowa’s bracket gets busted and creates a nice path for a deep run.

Didn't look good at all last night and still nearly stole a win. That was painful to watch for the most part, but cannot win them all. Poor Joe had probably his worst game as a Hawkeye. He was just really outmatched at any point when he was trying to check Cowan. That guy was way too fast for anyone on our squad, but really made Joe look foolish a few times with his quickness. Touissant will be a Godsend for this squad next season.

I think it has been doug saying it, but this team hasn’t really put it all together with the exception of the Illinois game. I’m hopeful they can get it rolling in the tournament with a more free flowing officiated game.

I get being upset about not getting the call at the end but Iowa missed the front end of the one and one twice in the first half. bohannon missed a free throw and Kriener missed essentially a dunk. That’s 7 points in a game you lose by 1.

I really thought both of those open 3s bohannon took when Iowa was up one with around a minute left were going in because he usually knocks those down in that situation.

That stretch at the end of the first half was brutal, to include a couple of unforced turnovers at about that point.

I bet the next time Kriener has an opportunity to dunk the ball, he'll dunk the ball rather than just laying it on the rim and assuming it'll roll in.

Maryland missed some shots they normally make too. It’s impossible to pin the outcome on a couple of plays. The entire flow of the game may have been completely different.

Right. My point was more don’t blame the refs, the players had opportunities and didn’t take advantage. As Kirk would say ‘That’s basketball’

They competed well and that's the most important thing this late in the season. This is not a team that is going to roll over and die. It would be nice to have some more physical/athletic players to consistently match up well against the upper echelon of the big ten. They'll still be a tough out in March.

I think the most important thing would have been winning the game, but I'm a little weird like that.

Meh, this team was never going to run the table the rest of the regular season. I think this is a good loss to continue to motivate them the rest of the way and hopefully overachieve. Although yes, wins are always appreciated.
