Not to get too carried away, but if Clemmons is playing like that, I can see him earning a starting nod alongside Gesell.
I'd actually be ok that. Mike drives me crazy most of the time.

It would be nice to have two legitimate guards for a change. If you're into unbridled optimism, we might even have three.

Those two teams played when I watched the PTL game in waterloo. That #25 (Koch for UNI) went balls to the wall trying to show up Woody. He did get a block and, IIRC, a steal, but he way overcommitted on about everything. Woody seemed to be really getting under his skin.

Also, Sapp looked good but I'm most excited about Uthoff. He was the best guy on the floor in waterloo by a ways. Just kind of did what he wanted

Uthoff should have been a stud last year and could have done whatever he wanted last year. His only problem is he lacks confidence and hesitates. If he gets over the mental hump he'll be the best player on the team.

I think he'll feel way more comfortable with his role on the team this year. The combination of it being his first year playing, Marble being the lead guy, and a short leash with Fran really messed with his confidence I believe. I shouldn't take too much from the PTL but he has been the best player in the games I've seen in North Liberty.

The best thing is that Fran doesn't really have a choice but to believe in him and won't have him on a short leash this year. Last year he had a couple Seniors that he could fill his minutes with because they were older or he considered one of them tough, and this year Uthoff will be the experienced player.

Yep. Uthoff will basically get the kind of leash McCabe had last year, except Uthoff will actually deserve it and it will benefit the team for him to have it.

This is why I continue to, after watching how last year unfolded, believe that Iowa is going to be a much better team despite losing Marble and 2 other Seniors.

You are going to have the right mix this year and a few good things are going to happen at once. Guys like Woodbury and Olaseni are going to really hit their stride on both ends of the court. Uthoff will flourish because he isn't going to be scared of getting yanked if he makes a mistake and players like Clemmons are going to have a bounce back year.

I'm still afraid there's going to be too many options for Fran.

Not this year. They only have 11 guys on scholarship. You can easily count out Brady Ellingson and even someone like Uhl or Dickerson will be easy to move to the back of the line because of their age and experience.

It will be much easier to go with an 8 or 9 man rotation, and that is if you don't have any injuries. He really doesn't have a problem in the front court because you have White/Woodbury/Uthoff/Olaseni and that is it. He will need to make most of the playing time decisions at PG and SG. Last year he had to make decisions at every position because McCabe and Basabe were clogging everything up.

There is no "McCabe" on this year's squad. In other words, there isn't a single player with no redeeming qualities that will get significant PT. Say what you will about Oglesby, but he had a nice season last year and the kid has redeeming qualities. Good passer, decent zone defender, nice shot.

I agree that Uthoff will be a starter from day one and he won't be worried about getting yanked. I am very excited about this season. I am excited to see Clemmons this season.

But more than anything else, I am excited to see Woodbury. He is going to take a giant step this year and no one will be laughing at or questioning him anymore.

Most of the crap fans said about Josh last year was mostly the result of his objectively poor Sophomore season. Some people seemed to view him as a ticking time bomb, where every slip up or missed shot was potentially the one that would cause him to explode into Sophomore Josh, and so he got way more crap than he deserved.

If anything he didn't play enough last year.

Yeah they needed more minutes out of an un athletic 2 who can't get his own shot

I think the only logical debate will be whether Fran should be rotating them or playing them at the same time. They're both going to be huge this year, babay!

I think NLP is closer to the truth than Ben, but I hope Ben is right. Looking back, it's amazing to me how much interest there was in Josh coming out of high school, and that there was even some talk of him being recruited as a PG by one or more HM schools. If I recall he had offers from Illinois, Minnesota, Virginia and others, and the talk about him as possibly being a PG was associated with Illinois, of all places--but Weber was still coaching them then.

It would be great for all three seniors to have outstanding final seasons. I'm almost expecting that from Gabe and Aaron. Getting it from Josh as well would probably mean we're solidly in the NCAA field.

Correct.

Minutes are zero-sum, and McCabe got almost 16 per game. You can't tell me those couldn't have been better parsed elsewhere, particularly between Uthoff and Ogs. And frankly it isn't about having a bunch more minutes, it's about Fran utilizing him correctly and having him in the game to take shots at certain times, or leaving him in during those stretches where he's shooting lights out. That wasn't always the case last year. He's a rhythm guy, he shot 40% from 3, and last year the team could have benefited from him having a couple extra minutes per game.

I also hope our seniors have outstanding seasons. If it leads to Iowa winning more it would be even better!

Playing Josh too much is a much lighter sin than playing McCabe too much.

Indeed, plus NLP's indignation over my suggestion that Ogs should've got a couple more mpg seems to suggest he thinks Iowa had some reserve of sharp-shooting uber-athletic 2-guards on the bench who should've played instead of Josh.

Ogs is fantastic off the bench and I seem to remember him pump faking guys and hitting one dribble pullups quite a bit last season. If that isn't creating your own shot, I don't know what is. He'll be a luxury this year if used right (and he doesn't slump!).

NLP obviously can't define "creating your own shot". Josh has always been way better off the bounce, jab steps, or fadeaways than he has catching and shooting off screens.

People also forget that during his shitty sophomore campaign, despite shooting poorly from the field, our offense ran better when Josh was on the floor. He seemed to stretch the defenses even though they would have been better served cheating off him a bit more.

Creating your own shot apparently only means driving to the rim.

There were multiple games last year where Oglesby was on fire and they were running actual plays for him instead of baseline runner stuff. I would like to see him finally play with Woodbury and White at the 4/5 to see how many wide fucking open shots or easy re-entry to the posts he can get.

The one game I went to last year was Minnesota and I think Ogs scored 11 in the final minute or so before the half ends to really open up the game. The dude can get hot, hopefully he can put a lot more together this year and if he does it opens up everything else in the offense.

Actually his shooting at the end of that half cut Minnesotas 10 point lead to like 2 but your point still stands. The other game where he was knocking down shots on plays run for him was the Wisconsin home game. Hit that elbow jumper 4-5 times.

Here's his stats the last 4 games of the year

Tennessee 17 min 5 pts 0 rebounds
Nw. 19. 0. 1
Illinois. 25. 3. 0
Msu. 23. 8 1

In 21 games he shot 15 fts. Hardly indicative of a guy who can get his own shots. 77 of his fg Attempts out of 110 were 3s. The vast majority of these were in transition or off screens. He's a decent role player, not a guy who should be getting more than 10 minutes a game on a good team. I really don't see how anyone can play 25 minutes in a game and not get a single rebound. His shortcomings are magnified when he's on the court with a pg who can't beat a lot of people off the dribble and create shots for others

Oglesby adds incredible value to our roster as an insurance option. If Jok takes a huge leap and Dickerson pans out, Fran won't ask JO to do much except get hot. If neither of these two occurs, then Oglesby gives us a 20 min option with acceptable everything except athleticism.

My guess is that the season will play out as a combination of these two scenarios. JO will start out the season getting starter minutes and will gradually settle into his role as Jok/Dickerson gets confidence. Also, I wouldn't count out the kid, Ellingson. I like what I see there.

But I don't think that Fran will pull a McCabe here. Fran was in love with Zach because he felt that he injected a dose of testosterone into the team. Same with May (which actually worked, as opposed to McCabe). I doubt that Fran will hone in on Ogs for some kind of intangible advantage. Instead (hopefully) he'll be used to provide some roster flexibility and some perimeter options against less athletic (or zone) competition.

Having Oglesby on our team is a very, very good thing.

I'm not sure I have the energy...but here goes.

1. Everyone here is saying that he's a role player and should get minutes. You're the only one that's saying he shouldn't.

2. If a guy shoots 40% from three, you find a way to get him in the lineup. No matter what. Especially a guy that's competent in other areas, which he is.

3. It's really easy to cherry pick stats.

4. Like Mikey said above, not every player can get to the rim and get fouled on a consistent basis. That doesn't mean they can't create their own offense. Ogs consistently showed last year that he can head fake and take a pull up jumper or a little fadeaway. And he works well off of screens. Reading screens and reading the way a man is guarding you IS "creating your own offense". Creating your own offense isn't isolated to a guy that can dribble and get by a guy.

5. There are different types of players. Would you prefer one that can't shoot a lick but gets fouled a lot and gets to the line only to miss his free throws but brings nothing else to the table?

6. Having a guy that can hit threes in transition and off screens is an absolute deadly weapon to have on a team.

7. Saying he's not as effective with a point guard who can't create isn't a knock on him, it's a knock on the PG.

Every coach in the country would give their left arm for a guy that's going to shoot 40% from three for them.

Calm down nolook, Jok is going to play a lot of minutes and Oglesby is no McCabe. He is a good player who belongs on the court if he plays like he did last year.

NLPs entire sports knowledge revolves picking a non-ankeny kid from the the metro or dubuque, finding a white kid who is taking minutes from him, make some references to boxing and rich people, and riding it until we want to kill ourselves.

So, Dickerson is not anywhere as good as Clemmons. And Clemmons isn't anywhere as good as Matt bohannon. That's nice

Dickerson looked pretty good in the PTL championship, other than that he can't shoot. However, he is quick and he's a good passer, and he at least put in some effort on defense.
