It’s a combination of course. The OL being bad contributed to the offensive woes but Petras being pretty bad himself didn’t help.

OL will be better and another offseason of work SHOULD make Petras at least serviceable.
Exactly. Of course an offense is more successful when a QB is dealing with a 3rd and 4 or 5 vs a 3rd and 9 or 10….which the line and Goodson left us in all too often in last year….but that’s also relatively independent of a QB’s performance in the plays that they’re being asked to execute. It doesn’t change that Spencer was awful in those plays

Couple days ago in interview with BigTen Network, Spencer said he panicked during a situational drill.

Still has the poopy pants.

I was just looking. We are entering our 23rd season of college football this century. Illinois' 4-5 conference record in Bert's 1st season there is their 5th best in those 23 years.

They've only had above .500 conference records twice, and the last time it occurred was in 2007.

My God. What a bunch of pathetic losers.

Looks like in 2020 there were a handful of teams in the nation that averaged 5+ per game with two at 6+.
Teams used to never pass and only run. Who cares?

Ultimately the point was for Iowa to push it down the field a lot more.

The idea of pushing it downfield more is fine. You said any team in today’s game that doesn’t throw it deep at least 10 times per game is totally stupid. No teams in the country did that or even came close. I was pointing out that your benchmark is way off base, that’s it. I also think your risk assessment on deep shots is off base but that’s a separate argument.

It would be similar to saying “any CBB team that doesn’t attempt at least 40 threes in today’s game is clueless” when the most in the country was 32. If you think every coach in the country is dumb but you know what they really need to do, there’s not much to say.

Maybe they can go 11-2 by averaging 336 yards a game, placing 86th in the country in scoring with a QB with a 17-15 TD-Int ratio and an average of 3.3 yards per rushing attempt- providing the defense can finish 8th in scoring defense.

Nah....

We can all acknowledge that that was an incredibly fortunate outcome, right?

It's sounds more like he's no longer playing football but staying at Iowa and assisting with the team, so possibly medical related. Unfortunate.

Listened to Kakerts podcast this morning. He had some minor camp insight.

-Arland Bruce went down briefly in a recent practice and apparently you could hear a pin drop. Luckily he bounced right back up. But because of how thin they are at receiver he will not be doing any kick returning.
-Brecht and Johnson have ‘returned’ to practice but haven’t really done anything yet. They’re hoping they’re ready for the opener.
-Gennings Dunker has looked really good and has basically locked down a guard spot which means Colby will be the right tackle. When Richman gets back they expect him to get left tackle back.
-Stephens and Elsbury have also impressed at left guard and apparently play like assholes so thats good. They’re really excited about the future of the offensive line.
-Gavin Williams and Leshon Williams both look good at running back but it wouldn’t surprise people if Johnson ends up being the starter by the end of the year.
-Yahya Black has really come on looking like the player they were hoping he could become. They think they have 12 defensive lineman that could travel when they typically only travel 10.
-Both kickers again excelled in the team scrimmage Saturday.

Black and Shannon are both going to be stalwarts up front. Our OL is going to be improved this year and our running and passing games will reap the benefits.

I’m guardedly optimistic

It’s a necessary trait for any contact sport. I’m excited for this group. I hate having expectations when it comes to Iowa football but I’m hopeful for improvement up front.
It might be a requirement, but it doesn't always happen. Which is why the distinction was made.

This is the second time we've have the go around with people thinking Black is like a 4th or 5th year guy... he's a RS So. Played in 4 games as a Tr Fr and kept his redshirt. That's not really behind schedule for a guy that came in at 6'6 255 and played medium sized HS football in rural Minnesota.

Neither Davis nor Jaleel Johnson started until they were RS Jrs. (Same could be said of Mike Daniels but he was behind some studs).

I actually think Logan Lee has a decent shot as emerging as a superstar this year on that DLine

Uncle Rico coming, but I always loved it when the fucking idiot DL (Juco) would growl and bark and shit like that. I’d always bark back at them in a high pitched bark like a faggot and then plant their ass.

Ya I was a fucking bad ass and hilarious.
