I don't think he's the problem.

Here's the update
Holy shit how dumb can they be to not figure this out? Barta should be telling every single fucking donor to give all their money to the NIL and have that money go to the players. All of the seat license fees should be funneled towards the NIL. Every dumb donation to name the head coaching position something stupid. Every single fucking penny.

Iowa and the rest of the Big Ten are about to get $100m per year without a dime of it coming from ticket sales, donations or anything else.

Are they that fucking dumb?

It was roughly 4 years ago that, right or wrong on some level, Brian was the front runner for the head coaching job. It was also clear from multiple comments that Kirk made he was setting him up for that and OC was the next step before that happened.

Unfortunately for Kirk and Brian, this plan has completely backfired to where Brian now has not only the reputation as a big fat fucking asshole, but also (more importantly) a terrible OC. He's a national laughing stock. Everyone sees him a the poster child for nepotism and with the Wadley stuff thrown in (even though it all seems to be actually made up) he is going to be unherdable in college football at anything beyond being a position coach.

The only way this resolves itself is Brian is going to have to either be fired (lol) by Garta, demoted by Garta, or Brian picks up his family and moves away from Iowa City and Grandpa Kirk and Grandma Mary back to being a nomad NFL position coach.

I guess there is one last option, and that is Brian and Kirk pull their fucking head out of their ass and put in another QB and change the offense to at least attempt to fit modern college football.
In the 4 games Padilla started last year, we averaged 26.3 ppg. 4-0.

Seems like only a retarded person would start guitar boy

I vote for the last option.

Which is most likely a throwaway COA with no hopes of happening.
Unfortunately, the reality is that Kirk was allowed to set up a fantasy dream scenario life for himself and his family that is going to be very hard to change.

He set this up where he gets paid a huge salary, he can hire his son to be the OC and make nearly $1m, his son in law is the head of recruiting, and he was going to be able to have the grandkids close and retire some day and had the job to Brian and watch from a luxury box like a proud Emperor watching his kingdom.

The new reality is that Brian is DOA at Iowa. The fans universally have grown to hate him. He's either going to have to demote or allow Barta to fire his son or watch him take his family and the grandkids back to New England. He's not going to be able to see Brian and the family every day at work anymore.

I imagine this is what is driving the stubbornness. He's trying to either prove themselves correct or think he is protecting Brian when he is in fact destroying their reputations.

To be fair to the swarm guy, he did have meeting with donors scheduled. No update since.

Garta is too much of a beta to do what needs to be done with Bryan.

There are probably 25 Iowa high school offensive coordinators that would be markedly better than Brian. Probably more.

The hardest lesson for any King or Emperor to learn is that their power only comes from keeping their loyal subjects happy. If you don't do that, eventually they are going to storm the castle and burn it to the ground and hang you and your family from the castle walls.

Well, if he needs help tell him to DM me. I can let him know how to set this shit up in 5 minutes. Of course that involves beating Gary Barta over the skull with reality, but all the same.

Is it time for Brian to take his giant fucking tits to the press box so he can actually see the entire atrocity unfold in real time instead of when he watches film 2 hours after the game?

Could that help? Would it hurt?
Brian needs to be on the field to coach the quarterbacks

Then he needs to figure out how to sell the future to the big donors.

This is his full time job?
i'm pretty sure the guy is a successful actuary who got sick of waiting around for an iowa NIL collective to form and started one with $100k of his own money.

he's hired a staff, created a website, signed up a bunch of monthly donors, etc., but it sounds like support on the institutional side is lacking (to say the least)

They set this thing up ‘the right way’

I get what they thought they were accomplishing, but it was not going to compete with anyone else. They need to just accept their new reality. They’re in 1 of the 2 conferences that matter, they need to start acting like it.

The luxury of having your grandkids 10 minutes away from your house is something no grandparent would want to give up. Which is why I think the only realistic options are for Kirk to die on this hill, or Brian gets a demotion. I hope Kirk swallows his pride and demotes Brian, because I do not want to see the former and its subequent fallout.

Kirk has never appreciated the risk of NOT changing.

Don’t like social media, just don’t do it. Don’t want to modernize your offense, don’t. Don’t like NIL, that’s ok just dont do it. Don’t like the transfer portal, don’t participate.

Sometimes adapting is the less risky decision.

Well, I could see the new OL coach getting thrown under the bus, asked to leave to make room again for Brian on the OL.

I’m not sure when the AD became so archaic but it’s predated my fandom. The gee golly shucks attitude we are doing it the right way is nauseating. Men’s college athletics have never been clean; and with the birth of NIL, there is no “right way” anymore. It’s adapt or die at this point; and they seem to be taking the latter option with their slow response to NIL collectives.

Charlie Jones is proof that the primary issue is not the level of talent at wide receiver.

It is indeed an issue, but it is not THE ISSUE.
Mike Leach could come in as OC tomorrow and have the current "talent" on offense at Iowa zipping up and down the field, probably using one of the team managers as his QB.

Of course Leach's style puts pressure on the defense and would completely screw up our "complementary" football system where the offensive responsibilities are ball control and protecting the football (21:45 and 3 TO's yesterday).

Mike Leach is literally the other side of the stubborness coin from Kirk. Brainless dedication to his system with no ability to adjust and gets shit on by every good defense he encounters. In his last 7 years at WSU he never scored more than 17 points against Washington and Washington's DC openly mocked him before the 2019 game.

The people with actual brains running the Air Raid have long moved on from his style of play.

OK then! Whatever! Substitute "actual brains running the Air Raid" for Mike Leach then! Even though the point still stands even if you have Mike Leach!

Guys, it’s official. We are all smarter than Kirk Ferentz when it comes to offense.

Except Cletey from Colgate

And you'd be pairing Mike Leach with Phil Parker and Levar Woods, at the low budget shitholes Leach has been at he's never had the coordinator talent and other resources he would have at Iowa!

At least 17 points a game! Produced by the offense! OMFG that would be great! Pair that with the Iowa defense and special teams and we at the least win the west most years!
Chill!

And fuck anyone that says, “well the other players aren’t doing Spencer any favors with drops!” FUCK YOU. He’s uniquely bad and has been for three fucking years. Brian can’t coordinate his way out of a wet paper bag. They are setting back Iowa football YEARS because of their dipshittery. Spencer has taken every single snap and has generated zero points. He was bad last year and is worse now.
My biggest concern at this point is not winning games in 2022. It’s Kirk driving this program in to the ground before he retires

Must be a helluva a practice player again, b/c he has been awful in every respect of what he is supposed to be doing. Again KF appears the hypocrite to allow certain players such leeway in game performance where they completely fail at the things KF supposedly values like holding on to the ball and missing blocking assignments.
This bizarre hypocrisy is also partially what allowed half the country to accuse him of racism two years ago

The Penn State game was the greatest Kinnick experience I’ve ever had. I was SO excited about Iowa forcing teams to get in the mud with them and just squeezing, squeezing, squeezing. Pinning teams back, defense lighting people up. I probably should have let Brian know that the offense not being a complete fucking dumpster fire was an important component of that. Note I didn’t say the offense needed to be good, it doesn’t.

Am I the only one who feels like 1998? A hall of fame coach refusing to acknowledge changes in the landscape?
Hayden was very different from Kirk in so many ways, he did change with the times. He was not afraid to use "exotics" and would put the wood to the other team anytime he got the chance. Hayden would have yanked Spencer two years ago. Hayden stayed too long and had health concerns. Ultimately recruiting dropped off dramatically as everyone knew he was going to retire. It took Kirk quite a while to get good talent back into the program.
