Kirk is someone that is intent on doing things the hard way, the honorable way. He's putting his personal philosophy of the way things should be over the heartless meta of modern football. The frustrating thing about this is that he refuses to make any sacrifices, take any edge that might allow his system to still work. He allows his meathead son to have a 900k coordinator spot for five years, he sticks with a borderline deprecated zone run scheme, turns his nose up at the portal, turns his nose up at the NIL and shudders at the scandal of benching his worst in the nation qb for a single drive. All of these factors together lead to something that is DFL in its field.

Let’s move on from 2022.

Who do we expect to be the 2023 starting QB?

COVID Petras?
Padilla?
Labas?
May?
Lainez?
Transfer?

I don’t see it being Padilla or Lainez.

Have heard nothing about May, despite my desire to see that be so.

Cannot imagine a transfer, as Iowa’s offense is too complex to comprehend in one year.

I guess that I’m on Labas.
May throws a good ball in warmups. That's all I got.

The sclerosis is at a critical level. And KF ain’t interested in stents. I, for one, THFHS, but desire his exit from the program. Hasn’t been fun for a while now. Tired of his schtick.

Basically, the offensive failure is much more about the Jimmys and Joes than the Xs and Os. OL, QB, WR especially.

ETA: But, the system doesn't help with any deficiencies either. Very rigid, so any issue is magnified.

That’s been glaringly obvious for some time now and has been a theme more often than not over the years.

This is sort of true especially in the last 3 years where the quarterback has been one of the worst in all of college football, yet is somehow better than the other quarterbacks on the roster, which is an absolute indictment of everyone involved in quarterback recruiting and should lead to jobs lost.

I've seen receivers be demonstrative to Spencer more times than I have seen that from all other Iowa quarterbacks in my lifetime. It's not close. They throw up their arms or drop their heads and shake in frustration at another ball that skips or sails or just misses. Charlie Jones is going to make an NFL roster, he was targeted more times in 3 games at Purdue than 3 years at Iowa, that's Xs and Os, AND Spencer's. Because as we've seen time and time again, even when Brian schemes for easy passes to a WR Spencer can't complete them, because 3 years into his starting career he still has footwork problems...because, you know, he has terrible fucking footwork and is less athletic than I am.

It's not like there hasn't been anyone put in the NFL in recent years from Iowa's offense. They aren't super duper stars, but they are talented enough to make some rosters and hang around the league, outside of TEs and offensive linemen where they actually have been rather good at the next level.

The running game and the passing game make no sense together. They are predictable based on formation, they have tells based on presnap reads, and they have a quarterback that looks for his buddy Sam even when other guys are running wide fucking open further down field in his line of vision. And they openly have quarterbacks talking about how it takes at least a YEAR in the program to be able to run it...so yeah, scheme is a fucking issue because these guys are in college and the Iowa offensive staff is DEEPLY confused about what "pro style" means in today's game.

Yeah, it's all intertwined and completely exacerbated by playing the worst QB in FBS football. As far as your last sentence, an overwhelmingly complicated system with shitty results is indeed a scheme issue. Either that or a BS talking point to justify starting the worst QB in FBS for 3 straight years with 0 improvement in his game. The shit they do isn't THAT complicated. I don't entirely buy the '1 year in the program to learn it' narrative. It might just be because we suck balls at teaching it. Which is then a coaching issue.

Extremely true.

How many time in the very recent past few years have we heard just about every coach in pre- & post-game pressers say that they KNOW what Iowa is going to do, based on formations and situational downs, and its just a matter of stopping it? Waaaay too many.

Or in the case of this year, just sitting back and watching Iowa stop themselves because the QB can't hope to perform at the FCS level, let alone P5.

Every other team knows it, but it takes a QB recruit 24 months to learn it.

And it really would be different if this was a "complaining about a top 50 offense" thing like what happened under KOK. Brian's BEST year is like 85th nationally, and his average is somewhere around 100(Whatever got posted the other week I can't remember the exact details, but it was fucking pathetic), and this year last. Even adjusted for pace Iowa is fucking garbage over his tenure. I wish he was better too, he's just not.

The stupidest Iowa football opinion that I’ve seen lately is the one that believes continuing to run Petras out there gives Iowa its best chance to win football games.

Your energy should be directed to those holding that opinion.
No one on this board has that opinion so it's irrelevant.
