What I hope, and have always hoped, is that Kirk has never had anything to do with the depth chart, and whomever puts it together is a real rascal. Not a big fat obvious rascal, but the kind that would find it hilarious for Kirk to have to take some shit about who is listed as qb1.

Starting to think this is Ferentz' plan, at 67, with a $42M buyout waiting for him if he sinks the ship so suddenly that there is no choice but to can him and pay out the full amount (so he can throw a couple million to his unemployed son to keep him afloat for a bit, and he and Mary can spend the rest of their years traveling the world and living it up on us

One of the fun things about the transfer portal is that you can quickly see effect of a offensive scheme or philosophy on individual players

while there is still a component of strength of schedule and the talent surrounding them involved… Watching a guy go from a 3-year below average starter to one of the best passers in the country seemingly overnight is something

I just cannot see Kirk even coming close to embracing the changes so it would not surprise me at all if this is his last year. In fairness, it does have to suck for a long time, established coach.

I don’t disagree. But it the reality of modern college sports. The coach’s job has changed dramatically.

They probably need to go get a portal QB and maybe another offensive guy or two along with a hypothetical OC change, but significant, widespread use of the portal would be an unmitigated disaster for the program.

The loyalty inside the program right now is remarkable, particularly on the defensive side. As soon as they break that loyalty to developmental kids putting in the work, good young players won't think twice about leaving if they blow up. Imagine if someone like Van Ness or Jacobs just up and transferred to Ohio State or Notre Dame after last season.

Trotting out this offense seems like the bigger slap in the face to the defense.

Really, because every quote I see from a defensive player is about loyalty and sticking together as a team. I'm telling you, aggressive portal use will turn us into Miami or Nebrantska with less sex appeal. The long term damage will be far worse than this offense.

Got news for you Bob, the defense fucking hates the offense

I think there is a lot of truth to this, but I also think that gets easier with a new OC who needs guys for “his system.” Of course I also think a qb that’s an actual run threat goes miles to fix the run game immediately.

I think there is hardly any truth to it. These aren’t high school seniors pissed that a junior is starting ahead of them. This is a business to them and they understand that the transfer portal works both ways. They’re also not total idiots. Except for LaPorta. He’s really dumb.

They would love it if Iowa pulled a couple of talented WRs and OL from the outside. Who would be upset with fielding a more competitive, less embarrassing, team? Above all else, these dudes want to win.

There is an ocean between going full throttle on the portal and bringing in 4-5 upgrades when it is clear to everyone that they’re needed.

Being afraid of becoming NE (or Miami) because of portal usage is about as ridiculous as being terrified that when Kirk leaves, we’re doomed to mediocrity. Because a coaching change didn’t work at _____ has fuck all to do with it working at Iowa.

Anyway, I’m actually hoping Petras starts. Padilla is as good as gone anyway. None of this matters so let Kirk and Brian look even dumber by going back to Spence. They don’t deserve a mediocre Padilla scratching out a win against NW after fucking him over for the last year. They made their bed.

that last paragraph really speaks to tbe bitter and disgruntled part of my soul. i still can’t bring myself to hope to endure more of tbe unsightly spencer experience, but part of me would like to see the Ferentzes hoisted yet again by their own disgraceful petard.

What do you think is “full throttle in the portal?” Bob said 3, and you said 4. Did you let Douglas put you on tilt today so now you’re lashing out? I think at least 1qb, at least 2wr, and am open to 1ol…sooooo…4, and up to 6 or 7. That’s a lot of words for “I basically agree.”

I’’m lashing out! I would argue 7-8 wouldn’t be the arbitrary ‘too many - we’re Nebrantska!’ number. MN and Purdue took 8. Illinois took 6. Who fucking cares? Take 10 if it improves your team and covers up recruiting misses. My broader point was that these are grown-ass men. I’m sure they can handle the competition.

Wrong. The good players will be MORE likely to stay if they know other good players will be joining them.

I disagree that they are grown ass men that can handle competition. I think they are actually pretty fragile and uncertain about their talent so any time truly challenged there’s a decent chance they fold. They are modern day 18-20 year olds, social media is imbedded, personal coaches, etc, etc, etc. So you need to be careful how you challenge them.

I actually think iowa is known for producing dudes who can be challenged, that’s why there’s been more nfl success than success at iowa. It’s a choice they make. So it’s not quite as easy at a place like this…but that’s just me.

Yeah, it’s gonna be great when people start taking our better players. The thing stopping that is the extreme loyalty that the staff has to HS recruits.

The one thing our staff does better than anyone is recruit underrated HS kids that turn out to be NFL players. Every portal player taken is at the cost of one of those lottery tickets.

Yeah trotting out Petras types every week is the sure path to keeping the studs around.

Bob is right. You can pull in 5-6 players from the portal, but Iowa is what they are because they don't act like 90% of the other schools.

With that said, not a single player would care if they went after a portal QB and WR's. Maybe an OL.

I stubbornly watched nearly every BB game during the Lick years but…

I can’t continue to watch this unless/until changes are made. It is impossible to enjoy watching this offense and I will be choosing to enjoy my weekends.

Never thought I would say or write anything like that.

The whole “developmental program” thing is completely overblown. It’s not like the majority of quality starters first get in the games in their junior or senior years.

The bulk of the good ones are on the field by the time they are sophomores.
Sure, but I think you’re misrepresenting that by a bit. It’s called developmental, and it has the 5th most nfl guys or whatever because they average the lowest in recruiting among those top 5 teams. Iowa doesn’t and won’t recruit at the same level as the other teams that put guys in the nfl, yet there iowa is, near the top. That’s development, and iowa is excellent at it.
