Do you have an update on Keagan Johnson by chance?

KF: Yes. He's still working to get back.

Does the fact that you're getting close to the last four games, does that play in how quickly to kind of get him back?

KF: His health will dictate when he gets back. He's been trying. He's working hard. He's been trying. He hasn't been a go.

I don’t feel bad for Kirk per se but I can sympathize a bit with the situation. At the time, most of us thought Brian was a fine choice for OC and was appropriate for the trajectory he was on. It hasn’t been like any of us hoped and unfortunately he now has a shitty o line and shitty quarterback for one reason or another. Brian failing at his role was surely something Kirk must have considered when hiring him. Firing was never going to be an option. So at this point either Brian sacks up and resigns or Kirk retires and Brian walks away.

At the end of the day, to me what is indefensible was tripling down on Spencer. That was about as close of a career ruining decision as one can make.

This is in no way calling for the guys head but the question was fair and his response/apology/and whatever the fuck this is, was really, really bad. He is such a stubborn ass hat that when shit goes sideways for the team, it gets hard to listen to him.
Right bc whatever answer he gives is just gonna piss you off. It’s like you’re listening with your arms crossed waiting to get mad.

The thing that's so strange, Kirk handled the original question pretty well.

The framing of the question was pretty stupid. Trying to make benching a player analogous to firing a coordinator is dumb. The question should have been more direct.

Have you ever met a successful (arrogant) coach. I bet it never crossed his mind that Brian would be anything but great

It's almost like hamstring injuries are unpredictable and easily re-injured or something...

The best WR in the country is struggling with a similar hamstring injury and he limped off again in the 1st half against Iowa last week. I guess he's faking it too.

Don't do this to yourself, Bob.
Do what? Live in actual reality?

If Keegan Johnson had "quit" on the team in the era of immediate transfer eligibility, then he would have just hit the fucking portal like every other player that decides to transfer. He wouldn't be showing up for all team activities.

Exactly, if this theory was correct he would have hit the portal in August. He might be pissed, he might be hoping for a new OC/QB, he might still transfer, but he is fucking injured.

That can't be, Bob. Guys that quit always go out of their way to spend hours doing team activities and not, you know, actually fucking QUITTING .

what’s the hurry to enter? he has until May 1, and may as well take advantage of all the perks associated with being on the team at least until the semester is out.

training table, workout facilities, not looking like a flake to desirable destinations
Lol. Yes, because THAT is what players who transfer in 2022 give a shit about.

Gus, you will always be my Gustang, but you're a goddamn moron.

I’d be willing to enter a friendly wager that Keagan is not back next year.
He might be gone, but for the love of fuck that doesn't mean he has quit now.

This dumb conspiracy by you and others is that he is faking the injury and has quit the team, yet he is showing up doing all team activities so he can have training table and NOT do full workouts that he could do as a healthy player literally anywhere else. This would also involve Iowa football knowing he has quit and still allowing him to use the facilities.

It's the dumbest thing in the fucking world.

My assumption is that he will transfer and is being extra cautious with his rehab in order to keep a year of eligibility, but he isn't burning any bridges either.
I thought he wasn't hurt and is faking it? Also, he could have quit whenever he wants and retain his year of eligibility.

Why wouldn't he burn a bridge if he is quitting? That, literally, is what quitting is.

You think he won't be burning a bridge if they realize he has faked an injury all year just to use the mess hall and work out in the facilities?

Perhaps he’s a decent person, but also wants to protect himself? It’s a VERY tough spot for a skilled receiver. If he wants to be a Hawkeye for whatever reason, the relationships he’s built, appreciates the leadership but not the strategy, thinks his talent is good enough to make it no matter what, but wants to be a great football player, so iowa with an average offense makes A LOT of sense. The assumptions you’re making suck, think better about these young people. Plenty suck, but the vast majority are great kids doing the best they can.

I don’t think the portal technically opens back up until December. If he hates everything, I would think he would still pretend until then. I hope he stays, but no one anywhere in the CFB universe would blame him for going somewhere else.

Of course, a swift firing and competent replacement of Brian after the regular season could change minds. I’m not optimistic, but hopeful.

I think nearly everyone agrees with that. If Kirk would get rid of Brian, hire a quality offensive coordinator, and stay out of the offensive decision making almost everyone would be happy to have him stay. The problem is that most people do not believe he is capable of doing that.
So the debate isn’t whether are not Kirk should stay if he makes changes. The debate is whether you want to live with the offensive status quo, or you want a new coach.

Technically players don't hit the portal right now under NCAA guidelines

I think you're right. Its not open all year long. It's open in December and May or something. He can't transfer right now even if he wants to.

You technically can always enter it. Need to be in by May to play elsewhere next year.

I know in every job I’ve left I automatically burned bridges along the way. I didn’t try to not rock the boat or make the transition easier.

You guys who think Keagan is transferring are all fucking retards! Doug is right!!!!1!

I ain’t mad at Douglas despite his calling me a retard. He thinks there’s a good possibility Brian is quickly axed and replaced after the season, which would change everything for a guy currently planning to flee. I think that’s pretty unlikely.

At best I think we’ll wait to see if Brian can redeem himself in a bowl game and/or hem and haw and wait/hope for him to find something in the NFL after its season ends. A purgatory of uncertainty for would be transfers, basically.

Kirk’s response to the RPO rules and Cut Block rule is the perfect encapsulation of the problem. Iowa needs to be able to adjust to and take advantage of opportunities like that. Instead they got punished by one, and made zero adjustment to the other. The honest response at cut block really seemed like “this rule doesn’t respect football, it’s wrong as it’s called we’ll keep getting it called.” Iowa can be a great tackling team, AND find advantages in how penalties are called.

The thing is I think he is right to hate those changes. He just needs to stop pissing into the wind.

If Iowa wins tomorrow and Nebrantska upsets Illinois, which I think will happen, Iowa nearly controls their path to a West division title.
That, uh, says a lot about the Big Ten West and highlights why the East division schools cannot wait for 2024.
