Kyle just grabbed the rebound, spun and dunked.

"Let him play! Let him play! Let him play!"

So redshirting Meyer looks to be a wise move.
Wrong. Why waste an extra year of scholarship on him? Plus with Woodbury and McCabe's foul problems we're likely to have a game or two where we need bodies inside.
I agree. Forget a redshirt - I'd prefer it if we could somehow use two years of his eligibility this year.

I thought if Meyer played he couldn't redshirt. Is that not th case?

We're not where we need to be, but 12,251 for a worthless exhibition is a good start.

There were nowhere near 12k there; obviously paid attendance. B&G blowout had similar attendance.

Adults were $5 and kids were free, so I don't know where they got that #. Season tickets don't include exhibition, I thought. Probably wrong.

If I'm going to go to an exhibition, it's going to involve Athletes in Action or Pella Windows. I will accept only those two teams.

Overall not much to bitch about unless you're AZ. Except that Meyer bares far too many similarities to Brommer.

Things were pretty stagnant when we got to the under 16 timeout in the second half. Then the second group came in and went nuts scoring like 20 points in 3 minutes.

The most positive thing was the increased defensive pressure on the perimeter. Hopefully some of these shitty teams we face will have some decent guards so we can see how that holds up.

It was kind of weird watching an Iowa game without Gatens. Aside from the first two games in '11, the last time he wasn't a starter we had Haluska, Tyler Smith and Mike Henderson starting.

It was extremely nice watching a game without waiting for BromArch to get on the floor.

Here were my overall impressions.....In honor of Match, I will state the obvious that this is an exhibition and you can't tell much from these games

- Gesell is good, like going to be one of the best to ever play at Iowa good. Better than Dean Oliver, Jeff Horner or others as a Freshman. Great kid, total control, athletic, smart, loves basketball, competitive, and can shoot.
- Marble and White know that they are good and were on cruise control today, but they are both going to be great. They both seemed to play
- Woodbury is a game changer. Great passing out of the post, changes shots, smart with the ball, outlets and runs, hustles his ass off. He is going to have games where he is overmatched and gets into foul trouble, but I think he is a 10 year NBA vet.
- McCabe looked much better and seemed to be lighter on his feet. I have been down on him, but he plays smart, hard and seems to be improved.
- Olaseni is athletic, but he is still a complete pussy and doesn't finish well. Will play about 10 min per game.
- Meyer is a fish out of water this year. I think he will be good in about 2 years, but is a definite redshirt and possible transfer at some point, especially with Uthoff coming in next year.
- Clemmons played like shit except for about 30 seconds. Made poor decisions and looks like a Freshman. He will be a really good back up PG in about a year.
- Eric May was his usual self. Looked good against smaller and inferior competition because he is bigger and can dunk. Did the exact same thing he has done the last 2 years.
- Basabe obviously hit his ceiling as a Freshman. He is still a complete garbage man and doesn't finish strong because he is undersized. I want to see him play with the first team to see if that helps. I think he could be the ultimate garbage man when on the court with Woodbury, Gesell, Marble and White.
- Oglesby will save this team at certain points of the year. He can shoot.
- Fat Pat won't end up redshirting and will have some games when he scores some points.

The effort level and intensity was way up. I think that they will be much improved on Defense. My guess is they will end up going 8-9 deep instead of 10-11 deep during most games. The second unit has some serious drop off and scoring troubles, but that will be fixed as players are mixed together.

Gesell ends up being the star coming out of this game.

Good synopsis, Dougie. You might be going a little overboard on the Gesell/Woodbury hype but I agree that they are both immediate impact players. I like Gesell....alot.

Nice summary and very encouraging but saying Woodbury is a 10-year NBA vet after one exhibition game brings back memories of people saying Jaacks was going to be drafted after we upset Kansas at home. Obviously not the same situation but might be a little overly optimistic this early on.

Not sure how you see Woodbury as so much better than Olaseni at the moment.
It was streamed online.

Woody does things that help his team win. I'm not predicting NBA success or anything, but Doug is right about this.

I want to go back in time like 4 years and see BBK's face when someone tells him Iowa basketball will return to relevance when they have 4 white starters, 2 of them redheads and 3 of them from Sioux City. With white guys from Cedar Rapids and Dubuque in quickly off the bench.

If Basabe was only as good the next two years as he was as a freshman, I would take it and not look back. He peaked two years ago.

I love the fact we have guys that can play so we can keep that lazy piece of shit on the bench when he decides he doesn't feel like playing that night.

Did you watch the game today? Woodbury is light years better than Olaseni in pretty much every aspect of the game.

My comment on the 10 year NBA vet for Woodbury isn't based off of this game, it is based off watching him many times and looking at the whole picture.

He is a legit 7'1'' in shoes. He is smart, a decent rebounder, very good passer, and plays his ass off. He has a good frame on him and will only get bigger and stronger.

Jared Reiner spent parts of 3 seasons in the NBA and he isn't as talented or plays as hard as Woodbury does.

Nah, they are still lacking scoring in the second group. This is a 5-7 deep team masquerading as a 10-11 deep team.

Olaseni, May, Clemmons, Meyer and Ingram are more like single digit minute contributors than guys who are going to make a real difference at this point.

Your real rotation is going to be the following:

Gesell
Marble
White
McCabe
Woodbury
Basabe
Oglesby

When you look at the box scores this year, these will be the guys who dominate the minutes. The others may get a good spurt here and there, but this is your Big Ten rotation and a huge improvement.

I'd really like for us to have another big who is capable of contributing 20 minutes, if necessary. You know Woodbury is going to be a foul magnet, so I hope Gabe continues to progress as the season goes on.
