Here's what we're hearing from sources we believe to be credible.

  • This is Barta's hire, he's taking the lead and and it's his baby for good or bad.
  • 29th is apparently the date for the hire, but they could have someone as early as tonight.
  • Gregory offered but turned it down.
  • Greg Marshall offered but no word yet. He makes 1 mil and the offer was around 1.2.
  • Boylan at Utah was interviewed but not offered.
  • Hewitt interviewed but not offered.
  • Lusk, Forbes and any other assistant off the table. They want a head coach.
Take it for what it's worth.
Barta said the following at his presser announcing Lick's dismissal:

"We’re going to be looking for somebody who’s a proven leader, a winner, someone who has competed for championships"

No offense, but Gregg Marshall, Paul Hewitt, Boylan, Brian Gregory, Paul Lusk, Steve Forbes are not names that immediately come to mind when reading Barta's comment above.

I'm
Didn't Hewitt's team play for a national championship?
Damned if I know. Was it in the last 5 years?

Gregg Marshall is a very good recruiter. Iowa could do a lot worse than this guy. He did pull a Dana Altman though. Took a job, then reneged. This was prior to taking the Wichita job.
But again, hasn't made the tournament in three years, since he was at Winthrop. He has made the CBI and NIT in consecutive years.

Most fans aren't going to get excited about that resume, regardless of what kind of recruiter he is.
March Situations!

I'm starting to feel more and more confident that Barta will screw this up.
I'm by no means a Barta apologist, but let's be real here. Iowa is not a top tier BB coaching job. Barta can offer money, but not much more. Iowa is a damned hard place at which to win consistently. The in state talent pool certainly isn't Big 10 worthy.

Within the Big 10 I'd put it behind Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Ohio State in terms of attractiveness of the job.

May Allah have mercy on Iowa basketball if the HC candidates are Brian Gergory, Greg Marshall, Jim Boylan, and Paul Hewitt.

As if my apathy toward Iowa Basketball could get even worse.

Gregg Fucking Marshall? Wait until you see him during a game, what a DB.

Why not Jake at this point? Christ on a bike.

$1.2 Mil. Glad to see we're really ready to pour money into this problem.
That part depressed me too, if true. So Lick didn't work out, so to show that he's really serious about doing better this time, we'll look for someone else at the same market level. Great.

I'm guessing that salary is commensurate with qualifications. Marshall and/or Gregory shouldn't be paid more than $1.2 million.

I'd say that if Barta is offering someone $1.2M, he's either not trying very hard or he's been told to go fist himself from Pearl, Dixon, etc. and is settling on his Plans X, Y, Z.

I think you're making an assumption that is not necessarily valid.

Even if every word of MH's post is fact, it doesn't mean that Barta has not tried to lure a big fish.

I'd guess this to be more likely than the former.

I tend to agree with this. It's really a bitch of a situation for Barta. Fans want a big name with a strong track record who's not scummy. I don't see those guys coming to Iowa. Pearl's supposed love of Iowa was the only shot we had, and it doesn't look like he's going to take it.

True. Like it was said above - I guess we'll never know that he didn't offer big bucks to big names.

I really hope that it doesn't end up being one of these guys.

Barta would need to use excellent bait to get the big fish to bite.

If those figures are correct on fallback options, I'm guessing he didn't even get the lure tied before moving on.

I hope I'm wrong and Barta hits a home run. But right now the opposition appears to be throwing a no-hitter going into the 7th.

I'd put it on par with Minnesota, perhaps. The others seem about right, and Minnesota of course has a better recruiting base. Incidentally, I wouldn't have much to put behind my belief that it is on par with Minny, except maybe new facilities. ;)

And how the hell would he have known that?

"Yeah, uh, hi Bruce. This is Gary Barta at Iowa. I have a question: let's just say hypothetically that a Big Ten school that a SEC head coach has worked for in the past was looking to hire someone new, would that SEC head coach be interested in hearing an offer from the midwestern school?"

There is no reason that Gary Barta can't get a top coach.

It's all about the money. The suggestion that a top coach turns down Iowa if they offer some sort of mega contract (e.g. 8+ yrs 3+ mill/yr) is laughable. I presume that Iowa has the money to do this, so if Iowa does not get a top coach, it's because someone or some people made the decision not to spend that kind of money. Which is stupid, considering they've spent a ton on the renovations.

I tend to agree. If Indiana out of the blue found $4 million per year to pay a football coach, they'd find a damn good one, and it would have nothing to do with the "attractiveness" of Indiana football.

Agreed, which is what makes this information seem so odd to me. Not odd in the sense that it's not true, but odd in the sense that we're pursuing this route.

so as I understand this, there is a current offer on the table ($1.2 Mil) to a mid-major coach who currently makes $1.0 Mil. Assuming Marshall is the Barta's highest ranked guy remaining on his board, why on earth would he not make an offer a little more enticing. I don't care that his market value is only $1.2, you are going to have to overpay somewhat even for a guy like this I think. I certainly hope for Barta's sake he is currently around number 12 on his list, b/c this sucks. We will never know if contacted guys like Barbee or not apparently.

yes we are doing renovations to Carver but how do the new digs stack up to the other Big 10 schools??.....even, less, way less?.....did we build something that will be yet again at the bottom of the conference in 10 years?

Consider Barta's last hire. Add in that it appears that he is doing it without any input and I can see Barta going this direction. You're right though, it does not make sense.

I don't how how accurate this rumor is, but if Gary Barta's search for a coach resulted in a 1.2 mill/yr offer being made to Greg (who the fuck is Greg Marshall) Marshall, then Gary Barta should probably call up Todd and ask him what moving company he used.

Any chance that MH is being used as a pawn to float a not-so-exciting name, so that when the real name is announced, it plays better?

The likelihood of that is the same as the likelihood that the internet and KCJJ rumors *caused* Barta to actually fire Lick when he hadn't planned to. Which is to say almost 100% true.

So people pay money to know what some 17 year old had for breakfast, what his favorite color is? I always love the "we caught up with so and so after they returned home from their recruiting trip from Iowa"......they all say the same shit...had a great time nice place, I like the coaches......have you ever read an article where the kid said fuck that place....it sucked?

what makes the original post credible? just curious

i watch more MVC hoops than 99% of people here, and I actually like Marshall as a candidate. he is a fiery ass. he plays a great style. not afraid to use JUCO's. he was left with a steaming pile of dogshit by Turgeon and he has put together a very good young team in Wichita. Plus, he wont cost a lot of money, possibly leaving a nice budget for good assistants.

Post of the day thus far from Hawkeyenation.com:

Should we be concerned that the poster of that information has his location listed as "in a van down by the river"?
Ole MH will soon add to the legend (not Legend12) if this one is true.
