I tend to believe that "X's and O's" is a vastly overrated concept in basketball.

I agree, which is one of the reasons I believe that raw talent is much more important to winning in basketball than it is in football.

Much of basketball is players performing outside of the system. Little of football is that way.

Debit is wise in this assessment.

I remember on one of the Big Ten Basketball specials on the Big Ten Network this last summer, they profiled the 1989 Michigan National Championship Team. One of the players being interviewed, I think it was either Terry Mills or Sean Higgins, said that during the tournament they weren't drawing up any set plays. He said they were "Straight ballin.'"

As long as you get athletes, X's and O's aren't nearly as important.

Forbes is a proven top notch recruiter at 3 different schools.

Forbes gets access to those top 10 recruits we haven't sniffed in years.

Forbes has serious pull with AAU unlike the last 2 coaches.

Forbes is on a team in the tourney right now.

Forbes is possibly an Iowa fan that really wants job.

Forbes probably is not going to be that expensive so Barta doesn't have to print money to make it happen.



Meanwhile Barta is hung up on coaching experience and will hire underwhelming guys from mid-majors.

isn't Dayton still in the NIT? Even if Gregory did give the team the day off, it'd be pretty bad form for him to interview for a different job on that day while his team was still actually "in season". I guess to me it wouldn't speak very highly of his character.

So about 4 hours ago I didn't understand the Forbes talk. Really, other than him being from Iowa I couldn't understand why people would want him. But after seeing the video of Shelby, if (Big if) he could get that kid to play at Iowa, I would be 100% behind him.

Get ready for the Forbes announcement next week.

He is probably the best recruiter for Pearl and "I" believe will take Iowa to a consistent top 5 status in the Big 10. This is his dream job imo.


I would be happy with Forbes.

Gregory inherited a strong mid major program from Oliver Purnell. He's been to two NCAA tournaments in 7 years, and had a losing season. Is Gary Barta looking for The Criminal's doppelganger? Dayton fans would drive Gregory to Iowa City if it means getting rid of him.

If Iowa isn't going to spend the money to get a name guy, then just roll the dice with a high potential guy like Forbes instead of some mid major scrub.

Yeah, but I agree with Karl. I've already acknowledged that it's going to take more money than one might otherwise want to spend to get a coach to come to Iowa. But if the end result of that is paying a coach like Gregory $2 million, I'd rather just roll the dice on a guy like Forbes - who (despite "really wanting to be a Hawkeye") would be an admittedly extraordinary risk.

I'm hardly a fan of hiring that Steve Forbes character, but it'd make a lot more sense to hire him and pay 750k.

It may be a "risk" but simply due to the nature of the game it would take nothing more than one or two recruits for it all to pay off. For less than half of what is getting tossed around for these other guys....I think that sounds like a far smaller risk.
