There’s no reason Iowa can’t assemble a roster like that. Fran recruits a “type” and thinks he can with that.
I have no idea how they didn’t bring in a single PF or C from the portal. They don’t need a guy that can score. They just need a guy that can rebound and play solid defense 10-12 minutes a game. ISU had 2 of those guys.

The NIL stuff is an excuse. I doubt Traore cost them much in the portal and he’s been solid. There has to be a lower level center like that that could have helped them all year.

Iowa has 3 losses. In those 3 games they’ve been out rebounded by a combined 50 boards. They’ve lost by an average of 6 points in those games.

You can’t just randomly play people way more than they are conditioned to play and expect them to be able to finish a game strong.

even more so for jump shooters
He's a 5th year guy who has played a shit ton of minutes the last few years. He averaged over 30 the last two seasons.

Ok. I’m glad you felt that your team was not gassed with 10 minutes left when we had two good players on the bench who had barely played.

Freeman was gassed because he got fat. The guards weren't sucking wind, they were helping off shooters for no reason.

I'm not saying I want Sandfort to play 39 minutes every game, but I'd rather Traore eat into those than Pryce.

This wouldn’t have been a bad game for Brauns to get a couple minutes

Exhibit A on why fans no longer care about Iowa men's basketball and don't bother showing up to Carver. Fran can't get big wins.
Lol. I’ve got plenty of gripes with Fran and the style of play…:but a loss against a team with numerous players making more than the entire Iowa roster combined is dumb AF

Right, that was a good thing. He wasn’t gassed. It was an odd game where Fran didn’t play the bench enough though.
Traore wasn’t as impactful and had some breakdowns. The double down he just went rogue for no reason, coaches were livid.

Owen not rebounding is an enormous problem, especially on this team. Also gave up a handful of dunks by helping on the driver when it wasn’t needed.

Going a long ass conference season if wins are determined by nil funds. Because ISU pales in comparison to most of the Big 10.

Thelwell played NINE more minutes than his previous high.

Fran is an idiot.
LOL, you fucking retard. You probably still want Desonte Bowen to get heavy minutes in a hawkeye uniform too. Thelwell should already be getting those minutes. This team had to have another ball handler on the court to handle the pressure.

hey dipshit, I am blaming Fran for not playing him more earlier; and for him not giving him a break.

when I was a boy, I used to flip over to CBS at noon on Sunday for Iowa vs Indiana to see if we could get ten white guys on the floor.

this is not a Fran thing.

No, that’s exactly why you’re saying it.
Duke was the #3 KenPom team at the end of 2005

But sure…ISU isn’t anywhere near that team
Correct, that Duke team would have murdered this highly mediocre Iowa State team.

Also, lol that JJ Redick who scored 22 per game that year and was the #52 ORTG is being KenPom comped to the 2024-2025 Iowa State in a serious way that would have him fighting to be the 7th best offensive player on the Cyclones and about 450th in the entire country.

Brilliant. Never stop, advanced stat-tards.

Does this Iowa State team have 5 NBA players on it like that Duke team?

Not sure number of NBA players is a valid comparison between 2005 and now given the number of international players in the league now.

I'm pretty sure considering there were international players on that Duke team and on this Iowa State team

It's more than valid. In 2004 there were 450 roster spots in the NBA. In 2024-2025 when any of the players in college now go to the NBA, there are going to be 540 roster spots.

In 2004 there were 82 international players and in 2024 there are 125, so only an additional 43 international players but an additional 90 roster spots. It's actually easier today to make the NBA than it ever has been.

I’m surprised at those international numbers.

Athletic and strong (black) guys who can get by their guy and finish are kind of important. Those are tough to recruit in Fran's soft ass program. Thelwell looks out of place in an Iowa jersey. I like him.

They've gone through their own droughts. Difference being, their ADs have never been afraid to make a coaching change. Ours clings to mediocrity for dear life.
Why would they change when the fans have accepted it? Money talks, and there is basically zero pressure from any big donors. They just want to keep their floor seats with no real emotional investment in the games.

last night may have been the death knell though. Stale coach, new AD, bubble team, several thousand visiting fans chanting in your own arena.

The Iowa athletic department is now probably looking into to ways to schedule 8 home games a year against Iowa State.

This is a retard take. Iowa and Iowa State both fired their terrible hires, and had a coach leave under pressure for a midmajor . It isn't as if Iowa State had a regular NCAA tournament coach and decided to move on. The difference is Fran has been good enough to stick around and for fans to get bored.

Morgan was fired for cheating, and Hoiberg left for the NBA.

Morgan was fired for not winning. The other things go unnoticed otherwise. McDermott and Alford left under similar terms, but one was allowed to flounder for 9 years and the other only for 3. And who knows how long Alford is around if not for an AD change.

Hoiberg left because he had success and was a sought after commodity.

But those aren't even comparable. Alford had 3 NCAA and 3 NIT appearances in his 8 years. That's not good enough, which is why it ended like it did. McDermott had 4 years barely better than The Criminal at ISU.

He was sick of his rinky dink AD making them sleep in a hotel ballroom rather than pay for rooms for the night.

ISU has had a better Bball program for most of my life. I hate it
If it makes you feel any better, they have the exact same number of conference championships and final 4s as we do for the past 2+ decades. Iowa’s win percentage the past 20 years is .572 while ISU comes in at .569. Iowa has failed in the NCAA tournament, though, which is what it all comes down to.
