This is going to be important. They’ll need to at least have that threat to keep defenses honest. The goalline stuff yesterday was about the only thing to really nitpick.
The opposite from last year. A mobile QB is what makes Lester’s redzone O hum.

The footwork most look at is happy feet and throwing off back foot unnecessarily...not exactly rocket science

I really don't understand when people do this. Why is it thought to be some sort of inaccessible science to be able to know when a QB has some deficiencies in footwork, mobility, whatever? He's right, it isn't some super complex thing.

I haven't seen it mentioned but I was very happy to see Osteenga be a part of the passing game. He looked good. Really going to help DJ.

Dunning Kruger should have studied football fans specifically. I'd love to sit down with you with film and hear your detailed analysis of QB footwork.

You disagree? Almost all of what people bitch/comment about with regard to QB footwork here is happy feet and throwing off back foot unnecessarily, IMO

99% of fans wouldn't know bad footwork from shinola.
Yes, because the likes of Greg Davis, Ken O'Queef, Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz and Tony Rice-A-Roni are just brilliant minds and you can't possibly see someone has shitty feet without being a COACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I didn't say anything about me having some sort of intricate knowledge about it.

I'm just saying it's not that hard to grade on a gross scale if you're comparing different players. I guess everyone just didn't know what to look at when we watched Petras? We just didn't have the knowledge? Lol.

He’s fortunate to have the OL he does. He’s not a guy you’d want to play behind a line with a significant weak link or two. Improvisation isn’t his thing. As noted, he wasn’t the same after a few starting linemen departed and the script ran out.
TBF, once the starting linemen departed and the script went out it turned into a fancy scrimmage.

Did Moulton look faster yesterday, or was it just a bad opponent with giant holes to run through? When he got past the line it felt like he was gone.

Could be both. He looked fast and able to step through ankle tackles.

Ya know, it always seemed to me that Cooper Dejean was a much more savvy punt fielder and returner compared to Max Cooper. But what would I know, I'm not a coach so I don't know what I'm looking for.

I generally don't try to evaluate while watching the games. Usually wait to come on here to see what Monster thinks, football expert.
I know that's super funny and all, but in reality I rarely analyze things particular to stuff like quarterback footwork because I know I don't know that much about it.

I feel like "QB footwork" is just fan talk for panicky in the pocket. I'm sure one of the "room" dorks think he can chart QB play and pick out the bad footwork but I think 98% of time it's just drawing the difference on the spectrum of Petras pirouetting against Nebrantska on end vs Beathard hitting that deep ball in the B10 CG on the other end

Hence the difference between commenting about "happy feet" and dovetail

That's fair.

I feel like people are just trying to nitpick things to fit a narrative they went into the game with. I wanted Hecklinski. I think Brown has a much higher upside and should be the starter. If he ends up being a pants shitter, you have Hecklinski as an able bodied backup.

It seems like a small thing but those short yardage and inside the 5 yard line plays are huge for Iowa and Hank has a better chance to execute those just because of his size.

Worst part of my game day wasn’t the heat. It was the annoying drunk nursing student next to me with endless stories about all her famous Iowa athlete friends she stayed up all night partying with and their coke habits. You wouldn’t believe how they party!

Iowa looked great and the QBs were fine mostly and both made some really good throws. I don’t get why anyone gives a shit that a starter wasn’t announced last week. For most of Kirk’s tenure, we’ve been clamoring for backup QBs to get some game experience. Yesterday was perfect for that. I’d understand the freaking out if we’re rotating QBs all season but that isn’t going to happen. Be thankful that both looked average which by Iowa standards, is good.

Kirk NOT naming a starter based on good citizenship or incomprehensible ‘intangibles’ and it requiring an act of Congress to get him to consider an alternative when he chooses wrong, is progress. Kirk would normally pick one, he’d suck, and we’d all be left to wonder if the backup is worth a shit. We got to see both and they looked better than Peaches and Bacon.

Take the win and shut the fuck up.

Two of the worst pass attempts in the endzone that our Hawkeye eyes have ever seen, and we’ve seen some horrific shit.
Agree with this, but he had a nice run on a read option to get down to the goal line. Also thought he had the best throw of the day on the sideline pass to Buie.

Brown looked better yesterday, but until they get into a real game we won't know who the QB is going to be this year. Unfortunately, it may cost them a game or two along the way.

I’m more concerned about the kicker costing us a game than the QB - and that’s an odd feeling under this regime.

I think, unfortunately, that Brown being even mediocre next Saturday is enough to give him the gig at least through the start of the Washington game. Hank would have to be so bad (cause them to lose) for them to give Hecklinski the start against UNI.

This is portal Kurt 3.0. He may alternate quarterbacks all season and throughout the playoffs.
