Iowa defense gave up 66 points to Maryland (and everyone talked about how "good" the defense was), 69 to Rutgers on the road and 63 in regulation to Indiana in this stretch.

The defense broke in the last 2 games for sure, but it was normal or even above average in spots and they rose like 10 spots in the defensive rating.

The offense, again (and I will keep saying it), is the issue. They average 80 points per game. The last 5 games they have scored the following in regulation.....

71
65
63
70
72 (and this was after being in the bonus with 13 minutes to go)
If you really think we are going to score 80 per game against decent teams you're lying to yourself. We've only scored over 80 nine times this year and all of those were against terrible teams.

93 - Green Bay
91 - UCONN
105 - ASU Hornets
98 - ISU
110 - Savannah St
93 - Nebrantska
89 - PSU
95 - Illinois
87 - Minnesota

We all know bad offense can impact your defense but it's way more than that. @CamelTones pointed out a bunch of issues and I've lost count of how many times our press has given up uncontested layups recently.
Aren’t uncontested layups generally caused by an offensive turnover?
Lol, yes for most teams and our turnovers have definitely lead to a fair share of those. I was more pointing out the number of times we set up our press and have somehow given up an easy 2 on 1 layup. I don't consider whatever the fuck Garza does as "contesting".

Got it, so if the offense was better then there’d be less uncontested layups.

Run outs on bricked threes are also an issue.

Making shots does allow them to set their defense better. It also allows a better opportunity for the coaches to scream at them to get back.

Moss the last 3 games is 0-9 from 2, 1-6 from 3 with 4 total boards, 2 assists and 3 turnovers in 65 minutes.
Since February 1st he's 12-45 from 2, 6-18 from 3 and 4 assists to 10 turnovers in 8 games.

That's a killer from what he was giving the majority of the season and a big reason for the offense struggling.
He's gone from confident player who doesn't hesitate and shoots in rhythm to that pump faking jittery dribbling and taking every weird mid-range shot over a three or a drive to the rim.
This is 100% correct. The question is why, and what can Fran do to fix him?

If that is true, I'm surprised a former man of the law like yourself didn't report such criminal activity to the ICPD.

I just don’t under the fundamentals of the defense. That one drive by Harper had 3 guys swatting st the ball. Not a single player moves their feet to try and get in front of him.

In the zone they continued to show double and triple teams on a guy in the high post that isn’t even remotely a threat from there. You want him taking that shot. In fact, in college you should be begging guys to take 15 footers and protecting against the 3.

They also auto switch every screen when the guard doesn’t need the help. Yesterday they ended up with bohannon on one of their bigs 3-4 times in the first half. This happens almost every time because Fran insists on the insane hedge off of every ball screen.

A lot of that isn’t foot speed, it’s coaching.
That play was beyond belief. The fact that none of the defenders made any effort to stop him was, unfortunately, typical of the lack of effort and defensive fundamentals that we have seen lately.

LOL at blaming the shitty defense on the poor offense. Just yesterday I watched Louisville go 2/22 from 3 and only give up 61 points. I understand if Iowa was playing Purdue or Michigan St how this could be the case. The last two games they have played one average team and one shitty team, both with shitty offenses and gave up 90 and 80. It's been said a thousand times but until Iowa gets athletes on the perimeter, they will never be more than a mediocre team.

Good post. The undeniable fact is that during the last few games our offense and defense have both sucked. Our guards do way too much dribbling without any purpose. They waste around 20 seconds of the shot clock and then we end up with a bad shot. Our defense is best described as "matador".

I haven't read the whole thread, but the real cherry on top of Saturday's shit show for me was Connor calmly burying a deep 3 right after time expired.

It doesn't help either that Cook is atrocious on D and that Garza is somehow far worse than he is. I think Garza may be the worst zone defender I've ever seen at Iowa. Seemingly every game Wieskamp has to pick up a cheap foul or two because Garza has no clue what he is doing or where he needs to be.

I agree with the premise, but don't necessarily agree with your idea of "mediocre"

This pisses me off more than anything else. If you're going to suck, at least don't impact the best player's playing time. Iowa somehow has the dynamic combination of worst rim protector and worst on-ball defender in the league. I give Fran alot of credit for getting as much as he has out of this roster.

Iowa is able to set up their trap off of makes which leads to TOs and/or burns opponent's shot clock. I would guess that their D efficiency after a made basket is considerably higher than off a miss, wonder if anyone could back that up with actual stats?

Rutgers is an interesting team, they are definitely built to bang in the big ten and have some really talented young guys. Harper killed us both games. Wisconsin is much weaker at G and will be a better matchup for Iowa. One silver lining for potential tourney dreams is that we get entirely different refs and a much more "freedom of movement" friendly game.

Well no shit Turd Ferguson. Along with every other team in America. But there's a difference between having a slightly worse defense because you aren't scoring and what Iowa is doing. And FTR, they shot 47% against Ohio St and still gave up 90 points. Sure making shots would help but it's nowhere near the solution.

I was on vacation and didn’t watch the game. I started watching the DVR last night for god knows what reason. The refs should be fucking embarrassed about the contact allowed on the perimeter and on cuts by our guards. I mean holy shit, it’s not even basketball. I have zero doubt that this was a fuck you to Fran from big Jim.

The first half was a complete whistle swallowing. They missed a pretty obvious travel, too. None of it really excuses the defensive recognition, though.

Here's the deal though...it's nothing new. That type of play has been allowed for years and will continue. What's really amazing is Fran's reluctance to adapt to it.

Fran's offensive system is great.... until the season hits early-to-mid February.

That's when the officiating inevitably reverts to "constant aggressive illegal defense is name of the game/can't call everything" mode. Iowa's offensive movement and freedom is severely stalled with all the hand-checking/grabbing/holding/banging that is allowed once the grind of the conference season truly kicks in. The first run around a screen without reaching out to touch/grab the offensive ballhandler will be the first I've seen this season. I found it pretty telling in the first half when JBo got so frustrated by all the crap that he literally used his arm/elbow to get space - right in front of the refs - twice in the span of 3 seconds, yet nothing was called against him (or the D).

Teams like Rutgers, MSU & Illinois would find everyone but the coaches, training staff and waterboys fouled out before halftime if the games were officiated like they were truly supposed to be.
So very much This. I would like this a billionty times if I could, kindred spirit. League is almost unwatchable right now

The biggest concern for me is that it happens almost every year....and they seem to be surprised by it every time.

I agree the criticism is valid, and wish the league would adjust...but we should be past this point and adjusting to it by now

Iowa was in the double bonus at the 10-minute Mark of the second half. They missed 12 free throws, if they make half of them they could have made the game interesting

Edited for accuracy. Teams have recently started to go over the top of the press and score easy buckets.

They lost by 1 because their big couldn’t catch a pass for a layup at the end.

I'm not going to complain too much about a team that has a worst case scenario of a 10 seed in the dance.

Improve on that next year, and you have an upward trajectory.
Nobody should complain. We've overachieved mightily this season. This has been one of the best seasons in awhile, and half of the fanbase is killing it.

Wouldnt blame Fran one bit if he told our shitty fanbase to go kick some fucking rocks and went to Georgia Tech or somewhere.
the fanbase didn't perform well vs Wisconsin.

The fanbase was really out of sync yesterday. The media too. They really need to improve soon to give the Hawks a chance.
