I guess I didn't realize how many Hawk fans thought Dolph sucked. I never thought he was bad, but then again I always compared him favorably to Zabel, who was objectively terrible at PbP. I can still hear my grandfather (who lost his vision later in his life) cursing Zabel during Iowa games on the radio because the score/time/down/etc. was seemingly almost never mentioned during the game.

He's pretty bad at football. Basketball he's just objectively terrible.

I think he can be passable for football but he wants to talk too much in basketball and that doesn’t work in a sport where possessions last less than 30 seconds.

I do my best to avoid him now that I have the means to. In football he is not as bad because there is time between plays for him to talk. In basketball he is notorious for telling stories during live play, missing action because of those stories, inaccurate descriptions of plays, and leaving the listener wondering about the score for long periods of time. None of this is new, he’s been that way since he took the job.

For football there's usually at least one game a year where I'm out of town or something without access to a TV so I put the game on TuneIn.

For basketball I'm on the west coast so a lot of weekday games start while I'm still at work or driving home, so I get stuck with him a lot more. I also don't really want to pay for the BTN+ shit so I usually just listen to those.

Dolph did Iowa games for KDTH in Dubuque for years. Then he did TV work for a while, before taking a job doing Northwestern basketball.
