Is this year really the first year a number of you are disappointed in Fran and Iowa basketball? Fran's had an assortment of disappointing experiences at Iowa, including his own childish behavior on the sidelines. I'm not sure how he's earned the break and faith people are putting in him. The thought of a new coach is a bit scary due to recent experience, but to pretend that Fran has built up all this trust is misguided. Maybe this is just as good as Iowa can be...but I don't understand why Fran has earned the faith.
Do you remember how bad we were?

Do you recall how often we've been ranked under Fran? In the top 15? In the top 10? In the top 5?

Do you recall how many first team all Big Ten players we've had under Fran? One? Two? Three? Four?

How many times we've finished in the top five in the conference? How many times we've been to the postseason? How many times we've beaten top ten teams? How many times we've played meaningful national showcase games? How many top 150 recruits he's brought in?

Are we Duke? Of course not. We aren't even Michigan. But to pretend that Fran hasn't been the conductor of a rebuild of monumental proportions is insane.

I'll concede we've been let down a few times under Fran, but if you think you'll be looking back in fifteen years at the era of Devyn Marble, Aaron White and Peter Jok with dismay, you're fucking nuts. Fran's directly responsible for that.

Fuck you, Alan Lomax.
Sorry G. Rape, mid-season rankings are a silly way to judge a season or coach. Remember how well Iowa was playing before they collapsed?!?!? I was driving so well before I swerved into oncoming traffic.

They've won two tournament games in what will be 8 seasons. Never finished ranked, have been to three tournaments, one of those as being part of the first four.

Which brings me back to feeling like he's done just enough to give people hope. We can't walk away now, Pat is highly ranked and Iowa has certainly been worse. Stay the mediocre course.

Illinois is Losing The Right Way this year, but not us. Nevermind that they just lost to Wisconsin 75-50. Ignore that, them boys are putting up a fight!

Not sure who said that, but it was a dumb thing to say. Now, what does that have to do with Iowa?

Any chance the Europe trips are a net negative? It sounds counterintuitive, but these guys looked burned out in November. Maybe they’ve been at it too long. The last Iowa team that took a summer trip melted down midseason too.
You know, I've wondered the same, also in terms of the burnout we've seen. And I don't get it; they don't do more than they're allowed ahead of the trip in terms of practices/workouts, and then the guys are given a bit of a break when they return before official practices begin (though the start of official practice was moved up a couple weeks in recent years, but it's still puzzling).

The last team that went overseas was obviously more talented and they seemed to just ran out of gas during the season. This time around it seems like they've run out of gas and that it's only served to highlight some of the issues that were going to present themselves anyway. I've said it before, but teams know that if they stop bohannon and Cook that Iowa isn't capable of much else offensively. If, as a collective group, they've checked out - add potential internal issues that had damn well better be resolved by the time next season rolls around - then it could add a little more context to this disaster of a year. As others have said, the Wisconsin game will be telling as to their pride and level of commitment.

Regarding assistant coaching shakeups, I think Francis is the one who adds the least among the staff. In the past, he seemed to have had the scout for the games that were among some of their worst performances. I don't know, maybe Sherm would be looking to retire and that could also help open a spot. And I hate this sort of thing, but.....I'd be more than okay with it if they encouraged BE to graduate and transfer. Seek out a grad transfer PG (or maybe even an undergrad if that NCAA transfer legislation somehow gets approved this spring), bring in Deano as an assistant who has worked his way up the ladder, while also bringing a connection to the coach everyone loves and you're hopefully on your way to fixing this.

I don’t think Horner would be a bad addition either, but Dean is smarter, more personable, and has been recruiting Carton

I just don’t know that he would make a lateral move to a worse program.

Weiskamp will be Fran's highest ranked recruit since Woodbury, and Patrick will be his highest recruit ever. Xavier Foster is a potentially huge recruit too -- I don't buy the defeatest logic that he won't play here "because"... Fran has been a solid recruiter, it was only a series of completely bizarre events that led to Ulis going to Kentucky, Fran stalked that kid for a full year, and unfortunately wound up with a total throw-away class.

The Moss, Wagner, etc class has been a big disappointment, not a single guy there has worked out.

Complacency has fully set in, and the comment above about Illinois "losing the right way" is complete garbage IMO. Firing Fran is hitting the reset button, you have to assume you lose everybody. If you squint real hard the future actually looks halfway decent. There is still very much an outside chance he lands a Xavier Foster / Jalen Suggs class in 2020.
Weiskamp, according to Rivals, would be Iowa's highest ranked recruit probably since Ricky Davis. So back to back years Iowa will be getting recruits at a level they basically haven't seen in 20 years. Anyone who wants to fire Fran and walk away from that is a fucking retard.

They have 3 overtime losses and got beat at the buzzer. It’s college basketball and blowouts happen, unfortunately Iowa has 6 such losses in conference.

This is exactly where I am with Fran. I don't understand the "Fran has earned the right" crowd, or the Jon Miller takes about this being Fran's first down/below expectation season.

"Stupid fucking ilk." RELAX dougie.

I don't think it makes a helluva lot of difference at this point but the thought that Fran has somehow "earned" some sort of special right to coach this team for another couple of years cracks me up. He may very well turn it around, but I question what the high-end of success looks like under his leadership.

Its like the guy has raised the program from the dreaded The Criminal hell fires and taken them to multiple deep runs in the tourney and this is the first step backwards. If you believe that you're the dumb one.

Starting to feel bad for Wieskamp. Good recruit, but when your biggest defense of a coach in his 8th season is a recruit he landed for his 9th, you're in trouble. Plus his kid the year after.

Guys, all Fran needs to do is to fire two assistants, completely change how he coaches defense, change his philosophy on how he uses his roster, and run off like 4 guys, and then he's back on track.

Great job by Fran to lock-up the highly ranked in-state guys. Seriously.

That may eventually balance out the dumpster fire he's built in the form of his current roster.

What a message this would all send to any future coaching candidates as well....

"Come to Iowa, possibly the worst power 5 program in the country, turn it completely around with top half finishes in conference and a post-season trip every year but your first and 3 NCAA Tournaments and the second you have a single bad year they will throw you out the door. At fucking Iowa. 1 single bad year and you're fired."

This is all the Dr. Tom stuff repeating itself again. Take away the fact he got to have 3 years of bought and paid for studs that Raveling brought in, because the second they all walked out the door in 1989 they were immediately horrible at 12-16. Then he was pretty much Fran McCaffery after that. Made the NCAA tournament with decent regularity, sometimes didn't, had a bad year in 1993-1994 thrown in at 11-16 and never got out of the second round until finally when he was a lame duck the last year.

Now almost everyone talks glowingly about him and how most think he shouldn't have been fired and was shown the door too early.

He isn't locking in the highly ranked in-state guys, he locked up one, while the other was made from his sperm.

Fran has never had a team give up so I’m starting think this is a legit cultural problem instead of just losing. Usually I blow that stuff off.

I have no idea if the bohannon stuff is legit but I will add something that I haven’t posted publicly yet. There was some definite nepotism and race related hard feelings shared with me before the season even started. Basically a player that was run off shared some thoughts with someone I know after williams quit and how the team is gonna be way too white soon to be good. I sort of brushed it off as hard feelings at the time because this guy was black and not any good. But then I heard threw the grapevine that Connor was legit beating out Williams and I was legitimately excited when that happened until we actually started playing games and it was becoming obvious that we weren’t very good.

I’m guessing the trith is a combination of all this shit.
are you bipolar?

on this site you post how there could be issues with connor being on the team.

then on the rivals iowa hoops board you cant believe that people would even insinuate such a thing.

The entire first sentence is bullshit. The biggest defense of a coach in his 8th season is a recruit he landed for his 9th? How about the 4 straight All-Big Ten First Team players he churned out.... getting Tyler Cook... getting Luka Garza.... etc...

I might be overly positive, but you went from a somewhat reasonable poster to this in a short amount of time. Nothing but doom and gloom and no way he can recover.

We said the same shit about Ferentz (wrongly) and he ended up recovering, changing a bunch of assistants, changing the way he does things on key plays during the game, ran off guys like Rudock and got back on track. If it were up to you and your line of thinking, Iowa would have fired him after 2014.

He locked up Woodbury and Gesell (who was basically in-State), guessed right on Jok, got Uthoff to come back, locked up Wieskamp early and is at least in the game on Carton and Foster.

What the fuck are you talking about?

Who gives a shit? The fact of the matter is that his sperm has become a recruit like Iowa hasn't had in a long time. And his buddy Weiskamp is right up there. Firing him would be idiotic.

The fact that Hawkstrat is trying to paint the narrative that Fran hasn't locked in-state talent up in his tenure is all you need to know.

He has gone full atemp negative at this point.

I think Iowa can recover, but a lot of the more optimistic arguments just seem off to me.

Take for instance Fran's 4 All Big Ten guys. Neat, I guess. But what did they accomplish at Iowa? I enjoyed watching those guys, but they made an NIT run and won two first round games. One locked himself in the gymnasium.

When weighing what a coach has done, individual all conference selections seems like working backwards. You've decided you're going to defend Fran, so you've searched for accomplishments, mostly because he's never had a team do anything particularly impressive. Grape mentioned showcase games or some bullshit. I mean really, that's the argument.

You speak with a lot of authority for a person that has been wrong about basically everything. Remember when you were putting together a list of people complaining after the Cayman Islands Classic. You were going to wait until this team was competing for a tournament berth, then embarrass us all.

I’m confident Fran will get this figured out. He whiffed in recruiting and missed on some guys for a couple years in a row. Last year, Jok helped a ton with a young team. Now you have a team without that scoring ability but really is just as young.

They will be fine next year. Just gotta get through this year.

I think they’ve got enough scorers. Cook will score, Garza is going to be a threat to be a double-double guy. Those two will free up bohannon who is an elite shooter.

I don’t know if Weiskamp starts or comes off the bench but I don’t expect nor think he needs to be a go to guy next year in order for the team to be successful.

I see no way Wieskamp doesn’t start. You just can’t run Moss and Baer out there in their current state and expect anything good to happen.

Hopefully Moss can reengage and improve a bit while playing SF where there’s a little less pressure on D. On offense even current Moss is better than Baer.

That's where I can't agree, I don't think Cook/Garza will help bohannon that much. I think Iowa needs a go to perimeter guy to do that.

Joe going to be that scoring guy right away, or do you think someone on the roster steps up?
I think they’ve got enough scorers. Cook will score, Garza is going to be a threat to be a double-double guy. Those two will free up bohannon who is an elite shooter.

I don’t know if Weiskamp starts or comes off the bench but I don’t expect nor think he needs to be a go to guy next year in order for the team to be successful.
That's where I can't agree, I don't think Cook/Garza will help bohannon that much. I think Iowa needs a go to perimeter guy to do that.
Good post play opens it up for everybody.

I see no way Wieskamp doesn’t start. You just can’t run Moss and Baer out there in their current state and expect anything good to happen.

Hopefully Moss can reengage and improve a bit while playing SF where there’s a little less pressure on D. On offense even current Moss is better than Baer.
You can't play 11 guys and you can't play Brady either, yet here we are.

Brady won’t be here. Wagner, Fredrick, and Pemsl should see basically no time next year. Probably one of Nunge or Kriener too, but one is OK on offense and the other OK on defense.

The most non retarded of Moss or Dailey should start on the wing next to Wieskamp. Obviously Jordan, Cook and Garza are your other starters.

Plenty of flexibility then with Baer, Connor, and the other of Moss/Dailey being the main subs, with Kriener or Nunge getting 8 mins or so.

Provided a team has a concept of spacing and has players (especially guards) that can feed them.

They have to have someone that can win off the dribble. Hopefully that's Weiskamp.

That's an awful lot of speculation.

I was pretty invested in defending Fran, but I took a step back and reexamined his time here. Concluded that I don't really think its absurd to want to move on.
This makes sense to me three years and three poor seasons from now, but we have sophomores bohannon and Cook, freshmen Nunge and Garza, and Connor and Wieskamp coming down the pike.

We could still easily be in the sweet sixteen in two years. But yeah, let's cut bait.

If there's one thing we can all agree on its Fran's meticulous management of PT.
