Any of you going tomorrow night? Is parking around carver the same for these games as for regular season games? Or are the lots not reserved for exhibition games?

There are still parking passes for this game, if that's what you are asking

Nice kid and hope he does well.

I guess Connor will be on scholarship at semester and then when Dailey inevitably transfers after the season there is no longer a scholarship problem.

As long as bohannon stays healthy this isn't bad news at all given Connor has reportedly been playing well. Ellingson can play point in spots.
I'm on the wait and see approach with Connor. Up to this point he had shown no real interest in playing basketball this year and the assumption just last week by most was if he hit it off in baseball this year that basketball would fall by the wayside. Hoping he is all in here now as Ellingson at point would be painful.

I wonder if Fran had a conversation with each player individually to talk about roles and Christian saw the writing on the wall.

You'd think he would have left over the summer if he didn't think his role would change with Jok gone.

My gut tells me there is no way Williams bails unless Connor has expressed a willingness to take on a large role this year.

He just doesn't strike me as the type of kid to leave Iowa high and dry.

Dudes, Williams left because Connor was going to take his minutes. Because he’s way way better. Like enough better to change his redshirt plans.

I hope you're right but you also claimed Josh Oglesby was going to be able to start creating his own shot as a senior

Didn’t want him anyway. Would have been nice if he took Uhl with him

No post game talk???

It's stupid to draw conclusions from 1 exhibition game against a midget size squad, but wtf else are message boards for?

I think the main takeaway is that Garza and Nunge are the real deal. They both probably took advantage of the smaller opponents, but still you could tell they are good. Also, Connor looked poised with the ball, but his shot wasn't falling, but that happens. So I think you are feeling good about those guys being in the main part of your rotation.

Connor playing point guard with bohannon still in the game was interesting as well. The worst position on your team is likely the 2 spot, so having bohannon take some minutes there helps the team. I like it.

The Hawks have some mother fuckers with some long arms. Nunge and Baer at the top of the press are going to get their hands on a lot of balls. Nunge, Baer, Cook, and Garza are going to block a ton of shots this season.

Kriener looked comfortable on offense, including draining a 3, but 4 fouls in 8 minutes against that team is not good. He was upset with at least 2 of the calls (and I think Fran got pissed about 1 of them as well), so hopefully it was just an anomaly.

I think Moss was hurt a, so no use playing him in the 2nd half.

Baer didn't do shit, but he's also your only good upperclassman, so it's not like he needs a ton of exhibition minutes.

Based on 1 dunk from Riley Till, he probably would have been a rotation player for the criminal Tom Licklighter.

Anyways I'm ready to set the rotation at 10 players, but obviously you know Fran isn't going to do that quite yet. These minutes are probably going to be way off, but whatevs.

1-bohannon with maybe 25 minutes. Connor with 15
2-Moss and Brady split 30 minutes. I think you go with the hot hand there. bohannon with 10
3-I think you maybe start Nunge and have Baer come off the bench again. I'm thinking Baer's energy might work a bit better a couple minutes into the game when the other teams' starters are a bit tired. I dunno. Whatever. Baer with a bit over 20 minutes, Nunge with a bit under 20 minutes, but will get some time at the 4
4-Cook plays a lot. Upper 20 minutes. Pemsl picks up most of the rest. With Nunge maybe picking up some minutes here as well
5-Garza with 23-25 minutes maybe? Kreiner with about 15? Aren't going to need these guys for the whole 40 minutes with Cook, Pemsl, and Nunge capable of being a 4/5 combination.

That leaves Uhl, Wagner, and Dailey on the outside looking in. Now I have no doubt that Fran won't go with that yet, but I'm thinking it may shake out that way. We'll see. It would definitely be good news if the new guys are good enough to totally push those 3 out of the rotation.

Anyways; you guys can all go fuck yourselves!

FWIW

Peace

Baer may end up coming off the bench but they’re going to stick with him starting for now.

Some interesting lineups tonight. I think Nunge, Cook, Pemsl, and Wagner all had time at the 3 with Baer not playing much. Nunge looks ready on both ends and is quicker than I thought.

I don't think I've ever seen a team with so many guys that are skilled in the post. The early post ups are great and it seems we will always have 2-3 options on the floor at all times. The guards should have quite a few kick out open threes and they are all plus 3 point shooters so it's going to be a fun year offensively.

Most importantly, I think Fran has finally turned the corner on Uhl. He was about the eleventh guy in.

The real fans were in chat @castichawk24 , but here are my thoughts....

- They are still fucking terrible on the defensive end. I know they have trended higher and even had a decent defensive team a couple of years under Fran, but 8 years in I think we have to say that Fran is a mediocre at best defensive coach because all of his teams make the same stupid mistakes. Guards are going to have a field day penetrating on Iowa this year.

- Garza and Nunge are both the real deal. Both need to improve defensively, but Garza is already more polished in the post than Woodbury and Olaseni combined as professional players and Nunge is a Uthoff starter kit without the mental issues. He could end up being the most versatile and best prospect on the team.

- bohannon looked leaner and taller. He is a damn good player but can't stop penetration

- Fran loves to start a guy who shouldn't start every year. A few years ago it was Clemmons. This year it is Baer. Part of that is options, but Nunge might be good enough they can't help but start him at SF by conference play.

- Uhl is done unless he catches fire again like he did for half of his Sophomore season. Fran seems to be done with him as well. Nice kid but he simply isn't a basketball player.

- Wagner is a one trick pony garbage man. He will have games here and there where they throw him out there and he grabs some boards early, gets a couple buckets and blocks a shot and ends up playing 25 minutes and having a good game. Then there will be most games where he is a liability or a non factor.

- Brady is Brady at this point. He will make some shots, run around, get torched on defense, do a few stupid things and simply be there eating up minutes because he has to.

- Cook is going to have a huge year, but his hands are as bad as ever. He also seems to have a Basabe like quality to him when he gets the ball, you aren't getting it back.

- Pemsl and his weight loss took about 5 minutes to annoy the shit out of me. It has already been declared the "Aaron White locked himself in the practice facility" go to story for announcers during every Iowa game after a single exhibition. We are going to hear about his weight loss multiple times until it finally burns out sometime in February.

- Dailey is interesting to me. He seems to at least have a slight ability to handle the ball and defend. If there is any injury at the PG/SG position, he could play. If not, he sits and then transfers at the end of the year.

- Kreiner looked like I thought he would. Improved offensively, still commits dumb fouls that young post players always commit and rebounds tough. He should be playing over Wagner most of the time.

- Moss got hurt on the first play and looked hesitant after that. He still appears to make some pretty dumb decisions and is inefficient. They will need him to take a big step forward defensively and in offensive efficiency if Iowa is going to be what they have the potential to be.

- Connor is good, especially for someone fucking around with Baseball for most of the last 6 months. It is clear why Williams quit earlier this week, and that is because Connor is about 1000x better than him strictly as a PG and in basketball knowledge.

Uhl should just join Williams
He is harmless at this point and would rather have him around. You are a couple of injuries away at the G or SF spot from having to play Riley Till in desperation. I'd rather take a chance that Dom gets lucky again.

The only danger he poses is if Fran is going to play him significant minutes, but it appears that he is the last scholarship player along with Dailey that is going to see the court.

so basically:

bohannon and cook will try to be sophomore heroes and jack up too many shots this year.

at least two freshmen will be starting in february

the best sg is the starting pg, and the backup pg is a better basketball player than the starting sg or his much-maligned backup

the 2 will be a complete mess until next year, when either joe w steps in a starts, or moss has developed enough to hold it down consistently

I think they're a 9-9 Big Ten team with this year's schedule, they'll flirt with the top 25, and if they get hot in the BTT, make the dance. More likely, another NIT year -- all in all, not bad for a bunch of freshmen and sophs (the upperclassmen, woof -- except for baer).

bohannon and cook will have games where the overreactors will blurt NBA projections, and they will have games where they look like sophs doing stupid things when they try to do too much. it's going to be a fun ride, but it will take another year for all the pieces to be in place for an NCAA run.

Guards too slow to defend the perimeter with no real rim protector. Teams with speed are going to be an issue. This team should probably slow the game down and pound it inside, but that seems unlikely.

Yeah, I think you are being a bit too negative about Moss. He is well documented about not being the best, especially when you dig into his advanced stats, but we haven't seen him really even play due to getting dinged on the first play.

Complete mess is way too strong of a prediction, especially when Moss is going to have multiple games where he goes off for 20+ points and is a big reason they win.

Lol, WTF? Cook was 5-7 and bohannon was 7-12. Moss didn't really play because he got dinged. Connor was 0-5 and looked absolutely atrocious defensively. Don't get me wrong Connor looks like he can run a team offensively but some great takes there. Moss is the only guard that has a chance defensively so you better get used to him.

Although I agree we have 3 of the slowest guards in the league I wouldn't say we have no rim protection. Garza isn't going to jump out of the gym but seems to have good timing. Baer, Nunge, and Cook can all be decent shot blockers off the ball as long as they can figure out their defensive rotations.

Disagree on slowing the game down. Iowa will have more skill and shooting than pretty much every team they play. When they push the ball to get early post ups it great. Most college teams are pathetic offensively so I think they have to try and get as many possessions as possible because the percentages will be in their favor in the long run.

Brad Stevens couldn't coach bohannon, Ellingson, and CMcCaffery into a good defensive backcourt.

I agree that all of those guys will get some blocks but I don’t think any of them are either big enough (in the case of Cook and Nunge) or athletic/experienced enough (Garza) to really discourage penetration. Last night you could see the guards getting beat off the dribble for easy lay-ups, similar to last season.

For the record, I don’t think Fran needs to recruit a Woodbury type, but I do think we need more guards and wings who can stay in front of people. For all his faults, Williams was probably one of the better options on the team for that.

This team’s success will be based on how Moss plays IMO. He’s shown flashes of being great and flashes of being invisible. He takes a step up this year and this team will be good.

If Connor and Bo end up starting we could be the first school in NCAA history with an all-white starting guard Court, linebacker corps and wide receiver Duo

I'm betting that your 20th hot take on the prognosis for this year's basketball team will be better than the 19th but I'm not counting on it

That was about as weak of a comeback as they come. I'm sure the next one will be better, but not counting on it.

Connor was the primary backup last night and played enough PG on the Euro trip to lead the team is assists. The assumed PG ahead of him just transferred out of nowhere. I don't get why they're being so coy with the redshirt thing, it seems really obvious that he's gonna play this year.
