It’s honestly hard to comprehend the dichotomy of “iowa fan posting on twitter” and “iowa fan who gives money and attends games”.

You have like 90% of the people screaming about (insert outrage here), but honestly no one gives a fuck about them. They don’t matter because they are easily replaced. They won’t be there when you are trying to build a baseball stadium or when you lose to ISU. Media can try to blow it up but they don’t really have any credibility either.

That’s why Barta doesn’t think twice about not even making himself available to the media today but then shows up at the game. He gives zero shits about his image. It’s actually pretty impressive. I don’t necessarily always agree with him, but that fucker has conviction. And why would he care? At the end of the day, if you win in major sports people will be fine with you. Coaches like him, donors like him, people that report to him for the most part like him, it’s just crazy the outrage we have towards a pretty damn successful athletic department.

Let’s use ISU for a local example. You don’t think the cultish positive attitude developed for their AD doesn’t filter through to many different parts of the fanbase, media, overall perception, etc? I mean just look at the reverence provided for ISU by local news vs Iowa.

Meanwhile iowa fans just bitch and bitch about everything, including the fact the ISU has gained on them in terms of popularity over the years. They are their own worst enemy, not unlike certain political groups.

So maybe “don’t matter” was the wrong term, but the fact is that a people who make zero financial impact and therefore have little voice and chosen to adopt a tremendously pessimistic attitude instead of trying generate a sense of collective progress within the casual fanbase.

That’s why I am indifferent on Barta, much like I was with Alford. I just don’t think our fanbase has the collective sense to give him a fair shake going forward. Our athletic department is pretty damn good. I can’t believe that so many people don’t see the risk in a change. Do they not remember the last AD search?
