He had big time interest last time and followed his uncle immediately. I’m pretty sure he could have gone almost anywhere in the country this time if he wanted and immediately narrowed it to Iowa or his uncle. If he wasn’t following his uncle, he was coming here by all accounts. I’m not sure if there’s anything that could’ve been done once Ed got a high major job.

So you are saying we should have been recruiting Ed instead?

I don't know what Fran says when recruiting against other high major programs, but he should try something else.

Family, Iowa kids that grew up Hawkeye fans, diamonds in the rough that nobody wants...that's the Fran recruiting pool. It's pretty remarkable he's been able to get us to the NCAA tournament on a semi-regular basis.
“I am not going to pay you, and genuinely want to see you graduate and be successful in life”

Fuck you and anyone else who isn’t happy with that approach getting us into the tourney 75% of the time.

Says who?
I went off of Condon's show and 247, but it's been said he will not be coming in ready to contribute ...but they've said if Fran doesn't fill out their frontcourt with a quality starting-caliber big that things could get more interesting and Mulvey could be forced into early playing time (regardless of where he is in his development cycle). I personally think if he ended up with playing time similar to Josh O, he likely would be better suited to keep a year of eligibility and focus on getting himself ready for 2022.

In particular, one of the things the 247 guys said...

A redshirt year at Iowa competing against Big Ten competition will make Mulvey better prepared than playing a senior high school season. The time and resources of a Big Ten school are impossible to replicate at the high school level.

Apparently, I am the only one who listens to and reads shit based off the response to the last sentence of my post.

Right, so a local radio host and a recruiting guy that are completely speculating and not going off any actual information.

Shoot the messenger and believe whatever you want to believe, but it's not insane to think he takes a redshirt (depending on what happens with the transfer portal). My original post had nothing to do with Liam. I think they will find a center in the portal -- no way Fran goes into the season without a better option at center.

I don't think it is insane that he might redshirt, but your initial post made it sound like a certainty.

From Tom's post on the other site, it sounds like Rebraca is the most likely post transfer option at this point:

Check in with Filip Rebraca to see what he's hearing from Iowa. Said they have had a few more phone conversations with the coaches and continues to feel good about Iowa. He said most schools don't comes out and say, we are offering you a scholarship, but basically they want me to go to their school.

Rebraca said Martin his piqued his interest in the Gamecocks, and he wants to learn more.

“I’m highly interested to see what they have to say,” Rebraca said. “This is just the beginning of the process. I can still learn a lot more of what they have to offer if they decide to continue this recruitment process. I’d like to talk with the head coach and learn about this program more. They said we (he and Frank Martin) should be able to talk soon.”

Why in your right mind would you play at South Carolina rather than Iowa?

Better weather, better food, and their most recent final four was in 2017 which is 18 years more recent than Iowa’s last Sweet Sixteen?

It's been talked about on here before, but Martin has a strange record at South Carolina. Outside of the Final Four, his only other postseason appearance has been an NIT invite.

I fully understand how absurd "outside of the Final Four," sounds as a qualifier, but it really is true.

Columbia SC is a shithole.

The fluke Final Four doesn't mean much. They've been one of, if not the, weakest program in the SEC since they joined, and that fan base obsesses about football 365 days a year. Their attendance is good, yet few seem to care about Gamecock basketball.

Or maybe Fran's whole ethos of team as family, four-year-culture, and loyalty doesn't transfer well to pursuing transfers. His pitch works ok when he's had a long recruiting relationship with the family and the student while the student is still a teenager. It doesn't seem to work all that well with young 20-somethings not named Bakari.

Fran is 61. He learned his recruiting pitch in the 80s, honed it in the 90s. Is he just not attuned to the new market?

Any calls on coaches in the 60s -- or late 50s -- who have quickly adapted to the new way? Or is working the transfer portal the young coach's game? Young X-er/Millennial coach gets it, old X'er/Boomer coach doesn't? Self obviously gets it -- but Kansas also kind of recruits itself.

That's interesting considering they don't have that great of a history in football, outside of a few years with Spurrier.

In South Carolina, football is a religion. High school on Friday, Clemson or Carolina on Saturday. Gamecock football is a sick sad joke, but you wouldn't know it from all the banners on houses, flags on cars, garnet clothing, and alumni donations. That they have never been able to hire a successful coach who was not a living legend, a cheater, or a living legend cheater, is really a pretty singular achievement given the state's talent pool and the program's resources.

People acting like Liam Robbins is Luka 2.0 in this thread. Based on Fran's history here its more likely he just landed a whale in R. Mulvey.

Yes. Give me.

Why don't they just go to quarters then? Why are they making it so hard? Also fuck the "elimination of the 10 second rule." I'd lower it to 8.

I would keep the 10-second rule, but I wouldn’t hate it being dropped. With the 30-second shot clock, if teams want to dick around for half of that while still being 60 feet from the basket, enjoy.

I dislike the held ball suggestion.

Five seconds closely guarded seems inconsistently applied as it is.

Letting teams decline FTs could be interesting.

That held ball rule without an adjustment in how freedom of movement is called will make Big Ten basketball even more ugly.
