Went to Notre Dame
Wearing class ring.

Checks out.

I worked with 4 or 5 Notre Dame grads at Target. Every one of them wore their class ring. Every one of them in the same bottom rung of the merchandising department role that the rest of us were in.

Between shit like this and recruiting guys for 3 years only to lose them when they get a bag at the end, I’m surprised more guys don’t go nuclear. Especially after they get fired.
I honestly don't know if Fran will be able to adapt. He's been at Iowa 11 years and has without a doubt been one of the most open coaches about recruiting ethics and has built the entire program on bringing in under the radar guys and developing them into 4 year players that end up as 1st Team All-Big Ten guys by the time they are done.

CJ might have been on his way to that as well. If all of a sudden those guys are going to get ripped from you and the whole mindset of players and their family/advisors is going to be validated by the "player empowerment" movement, then not sure how Fran can handle that.

College basketball was a broken shitty product before. I don't give a flying fuck about it now, just a mini-NBA where 50% of the roster turns over every year and guys collude their way out and have zero loyalty and competitive nature of a pillow fight.

I know this will get laughed at but I lay a large portion of the blame for this player freedom bullshit at the feet of guys like Rob Howe. Their insatiable need to be super woke is fucking up the sports I most care about.

Guys *like* Rob Howe, maybe, but not Rob himself. Nobody cares enough about what he has to say.

I look forward to revisiting this statement during your next Iowa BB game chat freak out.

CJ is also the most clear cut case of tampering you could ever have. His uncle living in Kentucky and a fan of Kentucky is posting during the season about CJ leaving Iowa for Kentucky and Kentucky media guys are basically confirming it months ago.

Now you have Iowa media confirming CJ is gone and likely to Kentucky before he even enters the portal.

If the NCAA is going to let stuff like that go, then college basketball is even beyond what the NBA has devolved into. At least the NBA will fine the shit out of you if you make a comment that resembles tampering.

I don't know how any college basketball coach builds his roster on anything other than a year to year basis and assumes that at least 50% of his roster is going to turn over every year.

My word this is a boring and outdated statement.

I'll always care about Iowa, but won't give a shit about college basketball in general beyond that. I especially won't care if Iowa is mediocre or worse.

The whole player rights thing is a balance anyway. Yeah, in pro leagues guys don't play for one team their whole career, but there's no pro league that lets players in the middle of a "contract" just decide "yeah, I'm leaving now".

I still can’t believe people didn’t see this type of situation coming up when they created the portal. Hearing media members say ‘there won’t be that many transfers’ shows how dumb they are.

Just imagine if the professional leagues allowed guys to sign 5 year contracts but were allowed to leave after 1 year because they ‘needed to be closer to family.’

There’s no doubt it’s coming for football. Guys like Brandon Smith will get an opportunity at Mississippi State for their senior year and poof they’re gone. Yesefu wasn’t even a starter for Drake until Penn got injured now he’s at Kansas. It’s dumb as fuck.

Lol, wut? I don't know if you haven't been paying attention but that is exactly what I am talking about that the NBA has devolved into. Players are doing exactly that and in the middle of their contract they just decide they are leaving and force their current team to trade them.

Anthony Davis and James Harden being the biggest examples of it recently.

At this rate, the only way we keep kids is by getting in-state kids who want to play at Iowa. We may as well start offering the Bowen Born's of the state as they will be much more likely to stay 4 years. Either that or replace the CJ's with Bowen Born's two years later. That's basically the path at this point.

There is no real reason to play by the rules anymore. There hasn’t been for ~10 years, but things have become absurd now. For this reason Fran is fucked, and he will probably quit before too long.
Let's not get fucking too crazy here. Fran isn't quitting, he's got 2 sons and another one on the way that will play for Iowa. He also makes $2m+ per year and isn't walking away from that.

This may not be a good example that I am about to give because he doesn't seem to be leaving, but yeah, might have to decide if it is better to recruit someone like Toussaint that is from NYC and has the possibility of being good and leaving to the highest bidder close to home or taking a kid like Bowen Born that loves Iowa and won't leave.

I never bought into the idea that one and dones were going to do harm to CBB because it’s such a small percentage of guys. The other startup league/G League option isn’t doing anything. Even NIL I think would balance out eventually.

This thing really sucks though and seriously hurts the product. I imagine it will calm down eventually but they have to seriously cut down on the waivers or eliminate them entirely.

These super woke dumbfucks don’t realize that in their quest for righteousness they’re going to fuck over the most vulnerable, small schools that give opportunities every year to the very people super woke Rob Howe thinks he’s fighting for.

Yep. At this rate, Fran may as well offer both Josh Dix and that Kramer kid from Johnston. Get the best Iowa kids and take a gamble on an out of state kid or two. Then try to supplement the rest through the portal.

The difference being the Pelicans and Rockets at least get something in return. Iowa gets nothing but an open roster spot. They can’t compete on salary etc. to try and land an Adam Miller type. They have to recruit a guy that was at North Dakota.

With CJ gone and Weezy most likely, Iowa is bringing back 1.5 threes made per game. If you go by players per 40 minutes numbers, it's 4 threes per game. I hope the Murray twins become sharpshooters over the offseason otherwise we're in for a very long year.

The NCAA is a bunch a pussies caving to everything now. Get rid of the dumbfuck Emmert & start telling these kids to put on their big boy pants or go play in Europe.
We are basically to the point of letting Jordan bohannon run college basketball

Yeah, but he is being given a shit choice. Play by a bunch of unenforced byzantine rules and get your shit pushed in, or get a new set of ethics to try to win. I kind if feel bad for him.

In the same week you have Fran calling the transfer portal awful and Jbo all over Twitter advocating for the one-time transfer rule.

If Fran hasn't already cut ties with a 6th year of Jbo, he needs to do so. The last thing this team needs is Jbo, who isn't very good at basketball, coming back in a union steward/national NIL spokesman role. But Jbo entering the portal would no doubt extend the sky is falling narrative longer.

So, do the schools also get a one time- "sorry, we made a mistake recruiting you, you were not what we expected once you got here..." -out of a players scholarship offer.

I stopped following recruiting for the most part after Tyler Ulis and Charlie Moore, because at that point it was pretty clear that none of it really mattered and Fran will sign some guys and they will show up and then you go from there.

Now all this shit is doing is making recruiting of players a constant through high school and their entire career in college. It's boring.

The fan reaction to this is almost as bad as the Foster meltdown a few years ago. Next year was going to be a bit of a reset year anyhow. I'm actually excited about watching a whole new team that has zero expectations.

Iowa lost two guys with chronic injury problems to the transfer portal. The odds were sky high one or both will continue to be injury plagued for the rest of their careers.

I am lol'ing at how the big thing a few years ago is that the schools had to bow to public pressure and make all scholarships a 4 year commitment to the player because player rights and stuff.

Now that players got their rights, the first thing all of them want to do is run out the door after a year or two.

Not directly, but its probably easier to encourage a player like that to transfer if they don't have to sit out. I always thought it was a shit deal that guys like Daily had to sit out a year.

Fran is too old school to put up with this BS. I can’t see him lasting more than a couple of more years coaching.

I could see him retiring after Patrick is done. So that would be 3 more years. This gives him a chance to finish coaching Patrick and maybe build up one more really good team. Then he can watch his youngest play college ball somewhere and go all his games.

We have to remind ourselves that if they actually stick to the "1 free transfer" rule, this year is the worst it's ever going to be.

While this is true, there will be outrage once it’s enforced and Aidyn, who already transferred once has a sick aunt back home that he needs to go help out with.

I know, and I said basically the same the other day. But this year truly is the first free for all year. I fully believe that you're right and it will happen, but it's not going to be this volume every year.

yep. the entire ESPN atmosphere preaches the social justice/players rights platform. Sports are turning into a political sounding board instead of a leisurely escape from daily life.
nolook sounds like every Chicago and Philadelphia fan in 1947. You know - back when sports were never part of politics.

Just like this no-politics guy:

And this one:

And these guys certainly weren't social justice warriors:

Fuck off with your tired comments. Sports have always been at the forefront of political change in this country.

Let bohannon come back and sit his ass on the bench every game of the season. That'd be kind of fun.
Nope. Don't want him anywhere near the team. Does anyone think he didn't ask the Iowa team to boycott/delay/protest an NCAA tourney game ala whatever Geo Baker was scheming up at Rutgers?

J/k obviously but the whining would be fun.
