Wade wants the all-yokel all-stars not at all understanding it’s exactly why Fran got shit canned today.
Players like Trevin Jirak are not why iowa loses games. Brauns was a decent backup piece this year and Jirak was much better than him coming out of high school. 3x state champ who doesn’t need to dominate the ball, gets rebounds, and guards.

I used to think Iowa could just lock down the instate recruiting and then sprinkle in guys from neighboring states and compete.

That’s all.

Brauns is 8x the athlete Jirak is.

He is in no way, shape or form the answer to what ails Iowa bball.
which explains why Brauns ended up on the bench at Belmont while Jirak had his pick of good mid-major programs and won Mr Basketball.

Yes they absolutely are. You can't just defend sub-par recruiting by pointing out that teams need backups. The overall floor needs to be higher.

All the other P5 coaches and recruiters are wrong, Wade is right. Trevin Jirak, and his Sandfart-esque vertical, is a real diamond in the rough.

I said nothing about this player and only pointed out that the sentence you typed was stupid on its face.
the state of iowa produces many good players. I don’t care if they are white, as long as someone coaches them to guard and rebound.

Keep in mind, I also said “maybe” and he’s not going to back out on UNI anyways

in his 3rd season. And was not very good.

this is the same group of people that think Pryce Sandfort is a D3 player and that josh Dix is some huge pussy, so I’ll stick with my eval.
Defending all the players on a .500 team whose poor play got their coach fired is a great strategy.

The state of Iowa produces many good players who "have their pick of good mid majors" and are "decent backup piece(s)". The entire point is that you have a win ceiling because your team has too many players that had limited ceilings when you signed them in the first place.

And you realize that the current environment means that there is very little downside to going into one of those programs out of high school. He’s not good enough to get high major offers right now, but he’s going to be very good.

Iowa is going to need 10 new players on a limited budget. It was an idea.

Would be kind of cool to keep gatens on board. Committed to Alford. Played for Lick. Played for Fran. Then assisted Fran. The bridge between hawkeye mbb eras.

I dont really give a shit but kind of cool if he hangs around forever.

The kid from Linn Mar is better than Jirak and he’s going to South Dakota St, which is a perfectly appropriate destination for him.

Take the best player in iowa just in the last decade:

-2 NBA players (not even counting AJ green)
-One of the best shooters and clutch players in conference history (not even counting Sandfort)
-2x Larry Bird winner and starter on 3 tourney teams
-Two other good players on high major teams (not counting a McDonald’s all American)

Then of course you have down years where there were no high major prospects in the state and some random Dutch private school kids wins.

We all want the best players possible. There’s a lot of room between that, and going 7-13 in the big ten.

Right now, maybe. But his game would not have potential to work in the Big Ten, like the valley kid.

Wrong. Lack of upside is a downside.

Your role players should be guys who didn’t pan out. Not guys that you signed to be role players.

I understand that no school signs nothing but five stars. But acting confused about why people might not want Iowa to sign another limited player after a decade of limited results is simply stupid.

I just hope Dix doesn't end up at Iowa State, then I'll have to hate him. He seems otherwise like a great kid. Goes to Creighton, it's whatever, just not those Ames homos

To carry forward another stupid argument, every coaching staff has assistants who aren’t that exciting, so why not have your first hire be an assistant that isn’t that exciting?!

I think that they would break him about 3 minutes into the first practice.

Technically he wouldn't be a new hire if he's still employed.

Lol. You have absolutely no idea if he’s limited. He’s a stud who will likely keep gettin better in college. He plays with three very good guards.

Agreed. People aren’t going to come back because Gatens is still on staff. New coach should bring in whoever he wants.

I don’t know anything about the kid. I am talking about a recruit that you yourself are defending with statements about having his pick of mid major schools, and supporting that argument with a statement that he is better than one of Iowa’s current backups.

His recruiting profile is a pretty good indicator that he is limited.

right. But he liked the situation at UNI and likely would have ended up with HM options had he waited, at least according to people that coached him/against him.

Even if you hate his upside, the idea that our roster is not going to have some meh players the next couple years is irrationally optimistic.

This is dumb.
Not necessarily if he has only shown the ability to recruit mid major limited white guys as Mikey is discussing. Is that the Iowa basketball the new coach wants to continue to project.
