Not necessarily if he has only shown the ability to recruit mid major limited white guys as Mikey is discussing. Is that the Iowa basketball the new coach wants to continue to project.
Is that the narrative now? How do we know he wasn’t going after who Fran wanted?

Even if you hate his upside, the idea that our roster is not going to have some meh players the next couple years is irrationally optimistic.
I sure wish everyone would stop denying that the rosters will have some meh players, because that is a real thing that is actually happening.

Kakert says Dix will be in the portal today, and McCollum might be the first choice due to DeVries' buyout.

Likely destination is Creighton but Iowa State is doing everything they can to convince him to go to Ames.

Wade I find your misguided confidence absolutely fascinating. Please don't ever change.

Also, if Iowa can’t come up with the money to buyout DeVries then they may just be fucked.
It's fucking incredible. 10 years ago the TV money was like $20m. Now they are flush with $100m+ and can't fund a tiny buyout for what should be the #2 sport and a revenue generator at the school.

All so we can pay shit assistants like Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz $1m per year and fund idiotic vanity projects.

Evidently Beth is on record saying that with the house settlement allowing Iowa to pay players directly, they don't have much to pay for a buyout.

McCollum might end up really good but I’ll be pretty disappointed if it isn’t Devries. People are running with the idea that McCollum is a basketball savant and forgetting that even more important in this day and age is fundraising.

he hurt his *current* teams chances of making the tournament so that his son could play a year for him with his *future* team.

this is the exact type of shadiness that I’ve been asking for in the basketball program for decades.

McCollum at Iowa wouldn't be a disappointment despite his question marks.

But, if Iowa ends up with McCollum simply because they couldn't afford the buyout on DeVries, there might be some bigger problems.

What has Iowa paid in buyout money over the last 20 years? Now compare that to about any other school

And the athletic department still owes what's left of the $50 million COVID loan from the university.

mccollum has higher upside imho
but devries has higher floor at this level

i personally feel like we should go with mccollum as devries still could be a viable option 5 years down the road
maybe not so much with mccollum

I would classify myself as a casual bball fan. If they want to regenerate interest and excitement in the program, McCollum doesn't do that as far as I am concerned. It barely moves the needle only to the degree that it is a change from Fran.

And this is our problem. The guy is universally considered one of the top candidates for any job, won 30 games at Drake with a bunch of D2 dudes and our dumbass average fan says “meh, don’t care”.

Everything has to be perfect to get interest. A large chunk of our fan base and students hate most things about Iowa and are too cool to invest any time. Meanwhile, ISU fans are completely on the other end, defending everything about their program to the death and we wonder why we can’t just win like them.

Which, of course, the university could choose to write off like so many of the schools we compete against do.

This self imposed “break even“ mandate is completely retarded.

See I disagree that McCollum has higher upside. Devries is a damn good coach, seemingly good recruiter, and has big $ connections at Iowa, including a bunch of people who are currently more interested in football. It doesn’t matter if McCollum is smarter. Devries is going to raise more money.

Gary Barta managed the finances of the University of Iowa like a fucking moron.
We had a coach that made the tournament eight times in the past 10 years that we fired within 24 hours of the season ending.

The same athletic director gave him an extension that likely kept him from getting fired in 2018, which then produced one of the most successful runs in school history.

You might be retarded.

Then the buyout shouldn't be a problem

McCollum - in his first year at the same school Devries just vacated - already had a better season than Devries ever did there.
that was with his D2 guys.

that is impressive as hell

winning his conference with D2 guys is an awfully apt analogy to what he might have to do in the I am a giant douche at IOWA
all we hear about is how IOWA lacks $$$, lacks NIL, etc

even if we get more $$$ , we will still lag behind the big boyz.
hiring a guy that can do more with less makes a ton of sense to me

I'm fine with McCollum, but would rather have DeVries.

It's great that McCollum won 30 games with D2 guys, but that's the Valley. it's not going to work in the Big Ten. Going to have to recruit far beyond that.
