I'm fine with McCollum, but would rather have DeVries.

It's great that McCollum won 30 games with D2 guys, but that's the Valley. it's not going to work in the Big Ten. Going to have to recruit far beyond that.
I legitimately don’t think many of the McCollum supporters have watched Drake this year, either. It’s an ugly product. Additionally, McCollum had all kinds of advantages at NWMS. I’m fine with him getting a shot but I really don’t understand arguing that he’s as qualified as Devries

not saying he didn't, but 4 of the starters were the guys he brought over

i get that, but he may be the smarter hire at this point
1) cheaper right now
2) will get hired by someone else if we don't pull the trigger
3) if worst comes to worst - we hire mccollum and for some reason his past success is no indicator of future results - devries will still be around

Vanderbilt was a good Top 50 win for them. Kansas State not bad either. Legit early season wins. Miami and FGCU were both shit down near #200, so nothing other than name to brag about.

Bradley their only other wins in the Top 100. No real bad losses obviously.

He's a really good coach, but just for the sake of argument of him vs. DeVries it's a no-brainer to pick DeVries. If you can't get him then McCollum is good.

One returning player, right?
It’s a hell of a coaching job. My point is McCollum was recruiting guys he wanted to a program that Devries had at 20+ wins/yr for 6 straight seasons. Prior to that, only the keno season hit 20 wins over the past 50+ years. There was also program support and momentum that was absolutely not there prior to Devries. I’m just saying…McCollum took over a much healthier program than Devries

I'll be happy with either one of them, but a $4 million buyout being a hinderance is LOL retarded.

We should find a coach not currently coaching or maybe who has never coached or doesn't even like basketball. That way, no buyout.
Only if they coached for Drake, as that seems to be some sort of prerequisite.

Weird that the program feels like a mid-major.

No matter how good McCollum is, you cannot deny that being dead fucking last in the country #364 in Adjusted Tempo gives me Lick flashbacks. Seeing their box scores with many games down the stretch in the 60's / 50's / 40's makes my eyes bleed.

Those of us who really follow Iowa MBB should be hoping Iowa goes with Devries. Iowa needs a coach who is going to force the Iowa AD to heavily commit. Refusing to meet Devries demands would feel like Iowa is ok with being bottom of the league in basketball going forward in order to spend heavily on MBB and go all in on WBB

no shit . 3 of the candidates reported for most of the major jobs are the last 3 Drake coaches.
find out who they are going to hire next, and then throw the kitchen sink at them before they set foot in the metro

And this is one of the main reasons that I cherry picked through some of the commentary in this and other threads as to why I would be concerned as a casual fan. If that comment is true, he would need to be a consistent winner out the gate or enthusiasm would tank even from its' current level.

Edited to reference Douglas' comments on tempo. It gives me a shudder to think we may revisit Lick style of teams.

this just is crazy ... the guy wins.

View attachment 61272
Yes, he just wins at low and mid-levels so far. On a relative level, so did Fran and so did Lick and so did Alford. So has nearly every coach that levels up from lower to higher conferences. So what?

Translating that to high major is a different beast. Again, I'm great with him as the backup plan if you can't get DeVries, but DeVries just proved he can win a level up even with his best player getting injured so take him first if you can.

Here is all I know for sure, no matter how good McCollum is he isn't waltzing into Iowa with a shitty NIL budget and bringing a bunch of D2 guys or mid-major crackers and suddenly going 30-3 and winning the Big Ten. So you are likely going to have to wait for a couple years for him to have a shot to win like he has at lower levels, and during that time you are going to be watching a lot of low level crackers play slow it down grind it out games while also losing a lot more games than he ever has. It will be eye bleedingly boring.

Recruits coming into Iowa on visits in 2025-2026 are going to see a lot of ugly games, and I'm guessing won't be thrilled to join up. Not to mention there won't be a lot of NIL money to entice them either way.

Doesn't matter though, if we can't afford DeVries buyout we are fucked either way so who cares.

mccollum adjusts his offense based on his players, which is a damn refreshing concept compared to Fran
he played slow as hell this season b/c he knew he couldn't run against his opponents w/ his D2 guys and win
his earlier seasons at NWMS were much faster paced

We had a coach that made the tournament eight times in the past 10 years that we fired within 24 hours of the season ending.

The same athletic director gave him an extension that likely kept him from getting fired in 2018, which then produced one of the most successful runs in school history.

You might be retarded.
Quit making shit up. Is this a joke?

Last ten seasons was 5/10. NOT 8/10. If we r feeling charitable we can say 6/10 if we dont count 2020. How do u get 8/10?

Was the 2nd round embarrassment to Oregon part of "the most successful runs in school history"? The first round flame out to Richmond? Do u really mean the 2nd round OT loss to TN somehow constituted the most succesful run in school history? Who needs final fours i guess.

Quit making things up.

2025 - no tournament
2024 - no tournament
2023 - lost in first round to Auburn
2022 - lost in first round to Richmond
2021 - lost in second round to Oregon (badly)
2020 - not applicable
2019 - lost in second round to TN
2018 - no tournament
2017 - no tournament
2016 - lost in second round to villanova
2015 - lost in second round to gonzaga

You are both sort of wrong. You have to give him 2020 because Iowa was a 100% lock to make it. L. Wade is talking about the 10 years leading up to this year, and Fran made it or would have made it 7/10 years.

So, it's not 5 and not 6 and not 8, but it's 7 out of 10 leading up to this season he gets credit for.

Would have made no sense to fire Fran if you couldn’t afford a $4 million buyout.

‘Ok let’s get a new coach. Oh fuck they don’t come for free.’

My FiL is the president of a bank in Parkersburg, one of the worst kept secrets in town the last 2 months has been Iowas contact with DeVries about the job.

Does he have kids who play or have played for Waukee? Has he ever been in Waukee?
He probably thinks "waukee" is some shitty cheese-infested Midwest hot dish and wants nothing to do with it. That's why he's the man we need.

No, you fucking idiot, it's SEVEN if you count 2020 in the 10 years leading up to the 2025 season. Here is your own fucking list.....

1. 2024 - no tournament
2. 2023 - lost in first round to Auburn SEVEN!!
3. 2022 - lost in first round to Richmond SIX!!
4. 2021 - lost in second round to Oregon (badly) FIVE!!
5. 2020 - not applicable FOUR!!
6. 2019 - lost in second round to TN THREE!!
7. 2018 - no tournament
8. 2017 - no tournament
9. 2016 - lost in second round to villanova TWO!!
10. 2015 - lost in second round to gonzaga ONE!!

Fran had made the NCAA Tournament SEVEN FUCKING TIMES in the 10 years leading up to the 2024-2025 season. Learn to count, fuckface.

you are right. My bad. But at one point he had made 8 of 10. That doesn’t really change my point though. His contract was favorable to iowa.

I think a big part of it was that he was on a lot of people‘s radars before leaving Northwest.

Well, that would be stupid. Why don’t we just find a great coach who is willing to sign rolling one year contracts?

And his decision to take the West Virginia job was almost entirely due to administrative commitment to the program. And Oklahoma State has way more hoops money than we did this past year.
