All we have to do to get fans back is win right away, play fast paced with good defense, recruit at a high level and win in March. Then people will come back.

Would have made no sense to fire Fran if you couldn’t afford a $4 million buyout.

‘Ok let’s get a new coach. Oh fuck they don’t come for free.’

My FiL is the president of a bank in Parkersburg, one of the worst kept secrets in town the last 2 months has been Iowas contact with DeVries about the job.
If we can’t afford a reasonable buyout for a new coach, why do we still have a baseball program?

Does he have kids who play or have played for Waukee? Has he ever been in Waukee?

Fuck it. Hire Robert Jones away from Norfolk State.
We need the closest thing to George Raveling they can find
Ravelling in 2025 is Robert Jones. Give him a big bag and let him work.
I’ve gotta agree here. If DeVries and McCollum are the supposed obvious options, I’d rather go in a different direction. I want an aggressive defense that can compete in the B10 instead of wilting. The landscape has also changed and development is less important, with NIL and portal recruiting more important.

Robert Jones sounds like an interesting option, but keeping with this theme I would rather have Drew Valentine (Loyola Chicago) or Jerrance Howard (asst. Arizona St) or both with Howard as top assistant and recruiter. Recruiting Illinois and Michigan would go a long ways to changing the program. Valentine is also known for his defense. Let him bring in all his Loyola players and then go to work recruiting.

I think the deal with DeVries has been done for awhile, but Beth can’t just sit back and make it seem like nothing is happening. Hence there has to be some “noise” here and there. Plus DeVries still wants his WV team to be motivated, so any noise that can minimize distractions for his team is a positive too.

He’s going to be the next Iowa MBB coach and it’s going to be glorious.

West Virginia has the 14th best defense in the country.
You’re advocating for a guy that’s been in the MEAC for a decade with a defense that’s 217.

It's not just the defensive end. They have to get some big strong athletes that can absorb contact on the offensive end as well. We get bullied on both ends. Relentlessly. Every opponent knows they're soft white pussies.
Yes, this is ideal. But I’m also 100% convinced DeVries would have our current roster in safely in the NCAA tournament.

No matter how good McCollum is, you cannot deny that being dead fucking last in the country #364 in Adjusted Tempo gives me Lick flashbacks. Seeing their box scores with many games down the stretch in the 60's / 50's / 40's makes my eyes bleed.
Appears you need your eyes czeched. 50s was rare and 40s didn’t happen.

Nobody gives a shit about the other teams’ inability to score.
You might have a point if the scores were 75-48, but they aren't. They also, by nature of low scoring low pace teams, played A LOT of coin flip games this year. 30-3 is their record, but with a bit more even luck they are closer to a team with wins in the mid-high 20's. Likely why they are only ranked a few spots ahead of teams like Iowa and are pretty much the same rank as Penn State.

But also only a few spots lower than West Virginia while playing with a D2 roster and scoring more points per game.

West Virginia in a billion times tougher conference and him missing his best player. Not exactly apples to apples, but thanks for pointing out he's still ranked higher.

Drake’s pace was brutal but he’s considered to be an incredible offensive mind. There are stories out there with Shaka and Grant McCasland seeking him out to fix their offense and crediting him for improvements.

He says the pace is because they refuse to take bad shots. Watching them this year, a lot of the clock drain and late desperation is because they have 2.5 shooters. Their defense was really good and they’re an elite rebounding team.

DeVries has had balanced teams and been really good on both ends at various times. This year with the injuries and roster the offense was rough because they had no shooting. Defense was outstanding. Rebounding was worse than normal partially because he didn’t start anyone over 6’8.

I would like to point out again that I am more than fine with McCollum. Would be a good hire. Just don't think you take him over DeVries with all factors considered.

what are the factors in DeVries favor?
I can think of a few, but curious if i'm missing something
1) seemingly has built in support from powerful ($$$) locals
2) has shown higher ability to recruit nationally than McCollum
3) longer tenure at D1/ more established at this level
4) Iowa is his 'dream job' thus he wouldn't likely be poached later

I don't think you really need to number them. I think the difference is pretty simple.

DeVries has a much more well rounded resume, including as an assistant to two good coaches, and a year at a high major.

McCollum's experience is much more limited, but nearly impossibly impressive. 12 years in DII, 5 coach of the years and 4 national titles. Insane ceiling, but almost no experience recruiting at this level, so a very low floor.

i actually said something similar earlier
i feel it's worth taking the swing w/ McCollum

mccollum has higher upside imho
but devries has higher floor at this level

Kakert says that in addition to Sandfart Sr that Dix also had a broken wrist in his shooting hand since the Wazzu game.
