This is what ToS had to say:
"Been told by multiple sources that the NIL issue was the sticking point for DeVries choosing Iowa. Sounds like SWARM was able to increase their budget significantly in terms of what they could promise him, but it wasn't good enough for him."
Give that entire budget to the football team tbh fwiw ✌

Is there a way to move like $290,000 of the NIL to Wrestling and Women's Basketball?

If true, Indiana is making him the 4th highest paid coach in NCAA basketball.

There is no way that Iowa is going to compete with that.
I have read that Indiana is trying to greatly increase their football NIL as well to compete near the top of the conference. This was from Reddit though..

Can Iowa just go ahead and sell Mayflower and use the money to go for a National Championship?
But, can we really not scrounge up 5 million somewhere to keep the school's reputation from suffering?
I guess not.

If this really isn’t happening, I doubt our NIL goes up much. I’m guessing a lot of donations were made on the contingency that we get him.

College basketball seems ripe for moneyball roster building. Beyond a handful of elite studs and a athletic 6’10 plus guys there hundreds if not thousands of players are essentially interchangeable. I doubt most guys who are 500k are worth 5x as much as a 100k guy. There’s still only so much money to go around at the top.
If the NIL is truly not there, then I would refocus as much recruting as possible to international prospects.

It will be $2M-$2.5M in revenue share for basketball (which other big ten teams will also have) and the hope that they can add another $1.5-$2M to get in that $6M neighborhood total.
As long as Iowa can consistently scrounge up more money than teams like WV who are a middling team not in a P2 they should be okay.

Is there a reputation? The last Sweet 16 was in 1999! Kids today would have no idea what the words "Lute Olson" even mean.

This is sad. DeVries would have been great. Could have stabilized things and been in a great position to poach transfers.
I figured Goetz had this deal largely done weeks ago. Now we wait to see how bad things might get. Big swing and miss.

Perfect timing for the Iowa Men's Basketball fan survey email
Lol. I told them they need to kick out everyone over the age of 60 and pay the students to come to games. Any sort of rebrand has to start with student engagement.

Yeah, and put off any facility upgrades as long as you can since those don’t matter anymore and scrounge every dollar possible for football. College sports are so gay now.

I don't second guess at the decision to get rid of Fran. It was well past time.

But this whole process should be instructive to some delusional fans about Iowa's relative place in the college sports landscape.

Chickens are also coming home to roost for the athletic department, whose long-term neglect of the basketball program has landed them in a situation that will be difficult to get out of without some new donor appearing out of thin air.

It was always what was likely to happen with a fanbase that prioritizes football success.

That’s absolutely true. Over the last decade, across the major sports Iowa has probably been one of the most stable schools in the country, and that has led to them, avoiding some of the lows other schools have had. But that has also meant extended periods of accepting results that were just fine. and I think we’re seeing that there are consequences to that too.

Do we have a list of all the posters here who guaranteed Devries to Iowa?
i am one of them. I was under the impression that we had to really fuck it up to not get him.

it sounds like we exceeded expectations

7 million a year is too much and absolutely not worth it for a coach.
Sure. And if that figure is true, what are you going to do? But if Iowa is left holding their dicks a week from now without a new coach, that is not a leadership confidence inspiring process.

What is throwing every dollar possible at football going to accomplish? Indiana basketball has been throwing around ridiculous money at that program with no results. Nebrantska football the same. Iowa wrestling has tried it and they’re no better. Iowa football threw a shit ton of money at the portal 2 years ago and the results are pretty much the same.

As Mikey said, the reality is it’s really hard to win at Iowa. It’s probably not reasonable to expect Iowa to be able to fund football, women’s basketball, men’s basketball and wrestling. Caitlin Clark stole a large portion of attention away from the men at the worst possible time for the men’s program.

I still think you can money ball your way to success. I wouldn’t want Iowa to pay Owen Freeman what others are willing to. If you get McCollum, it’s going to be more about retaining and developing and accepting you’ll likely lose top end guys that will need to be replaced. What Yales Coach did this year is a perfect example.

You resign yourself to mining mid majors for their coaches, which is what they've done with the last 3 hires anyways.

Kids these days would have no idea who Dr Tom is or even barely Steve Alford

It’s seriously embarrassing if we can’t even get enough NIL to get DD. I don’t think we even had to match Indiana.

Based on the other comments I heard I am guessing we are going to go very cheap on this hire if it’s not DD.

Don’t be surprised if the next coach is the dude from High Point U. I wish I were kidding.

This completely took the wind out of my sails. Unless they somehow get McCollum, the next coach will be a meh. The NIL will be a meh. The coaching salary will be a meh.

I don’t see myself giving a shit anymore.

Look, Gary Barta is gone, but he wasn’t the sole source of that win graduate do it right bullshit. Iowa absolutely does not relatively prioritize winning as highly as other places.

And by the way, that’s not always the wrong decision. Nebrantska football prioritizes winning, but that hasn’t gotten them anymore wins.

The reality is Iowa is a bottom tier Power conference program. Just above teams like Nebrantska

What happened to all the NIL he was going to bring from his buddy at Hy-Vee and friends in Des Moines? The existing $4-$5M plus that would be competitive.

IU will have $8M in NIL and he’s rumored to be making $5M in salary. It’s not going on the cheap that they couldn’t get near that. He apparently just prioritized that.
