What happened to all the NIL he was going to bring from his buddy at Hy-Vee and friends in Des Moines? The existing $4-$5M plus that would be competitive.

IU will have $8M in NIL and he’s rumored to be making $5M in salary. It’s not going on the cheap that they couldn’t get near that. He apparently just prioritized that.
we will have to see what the final numbers are I guess.

Honestly, I have not heard anything that makes me think he’s not coming to iowa other than what’s being repeated on social media, but it seems to be a given at this point

Meaning Goetz or the department in general? Or the lack of NIL funds?
Beth. This is coming through someone that has both interviewed with her in the past and will also have some decisions to make this week.

It sounds like she actually doesn’t care that men’s basketball is fourth in NIL on campus.

Again, just passing along the most credible stuff I hear. Take it FWIW. There’s a lot of other bullshit out there that I’m not gonna bother mentioning.

10 years ago I would have been hanging on every update and truly angry about all of this. It's refreshing to just be able to laugh about it and what a fucked up situation the whole thing is.

I've grown up!!

The craziest thing about all of this continues to be that the same 10 years ago schools in the Big Ten got about $20m each from tv contracts.

Now they get $100m per school and somehow Iowa can't come up with basic money. They're broke somehow. It's incredible.

What is throwing every dollar possible at football going to accomplish? Indiana basketball has been throwing around ridiculous money at that program with no results. Nebrantska football the same. Iowa wrestling has tried it and they’re no better. Iowa football threw a shit ton of money at the portal 2 years ago and the results are pretty much the same.

As Mikey said, the reality is it’s really hard to win at Iowa. It’s probably not reasonable to expect Iowa to be able to fund football, women’s basketball, men’s basketball and wrestling. Caitlin Clark stole a large portion of attention away from the men at the worst possible time for the men’s program.

I still think you can money ball your way to success. I wouldn’t want Iowa to pay Owen Freeman what others are willing to. If you get McCollum, it’s going to be more about retaining and developing and accepting you’ll likely lose top end guys that will need to be replaced. What Yales Coach did this year is a perfect example.
It’s mostly hard to win at Iowa because they choose to make it as hard as possible.

Again, what an embarrassing situation for Indiana. Had to get in a bidding war and massively over-pay for the head coach of... shuffles papers... checks notes... Drake and non-tourney West Virginia.

Lol.

The only money shortage is on the NIL side, the AD budget is fine. I don't know why people keep conflating these two things because there is no sign that the AD budget was a real issue in this. Not wanting to match an Indiana contract offer is totally reasonable.

It's been a shitshow so far so you may as well post some other nuggets. At least give us one more!

I also wonder how much of the "not caring about it" is actually her knowing Iowa just doesn't have the big donors. I don't know.

People keep conflating them because Beth could call up the large donors that give to the University of Iowa and say "hey, don't give us the money, send it to the NIL."

That is what every other fucking school seems to have figured out, but somehow the last two AD's at Iowa can't figure it out.

I like Devries but Indiana is getting a coach that has never won an NCAA tournament game. That's interesting.

If she doesn’t care that men’s basketball is 4th in NIL on campus then wtf was the point of getting rid of Fran? You’re not getting fans excited by hiring the fucking Bradley coach.
Probably because Marge thought she ran the place.

again, Iowa makes everything harder than it needs to be. There has always been this “Iowa does things the right way!” bullshit that appeals to the Casey’s crowd but hurts their sports programs. NIL has made it so much worse.

If McCollom falls through, just hire some flash-in-the-pan from whoever the surprise team in the tournament is. You can always fire him in a year or two. I'd rather do that than hire some re-tread like Tom Crean.

I still think we will end up with a good hire, it just won’t help the attendance or donations much.

And then we can all comfort ourselves with the new coach having nicer expressions on his face on the sideline while he wins fewer games than Fran.
So we’re just going to pretend this entire board didn’t rightfully want Fran fired every game for the last two months? We’re going to pretend L Wade knows fucking shit about what people think about the AD after he spent three days telling everyone on multiple boards his former Waukee neighbor was going to be the coach?

sure, there are problems with men’s basketball. But we were paying Fran 3.5 million. We have a pretty decent to good practice facility, carver is what it is. One of the ten best programs in the history of college basketball came in and got DeVries. Let’s see where this goes before we close down the department.

And the “Caitlin Clark hurt men’s basketball” takes are insane. If you can’t use the attention she brought to the university to help the men’s program that’s on the coach.

why would McCollum take the job over West Virginia?
Because he’s lived his entire life in a 4 hour radius and apparently is extremely close with his mom. Drake people have largely been more concerned with Iowa than Indiana from what I’ve seen. His relationship with the WVU A.D. will be a challenge though.

Iowa needs to find an under the radar mid-major guy who loves defense and can go full sketchy salespimp when he has to.

No major guy takes this job, and in-demand mid-major types may well pass because of the low NIL.

Women’s basketball is consuming a decent amount of NIL dollars that Iowa doesn’t have a lot of. That absolutely has an impact on the men’s program.

Read this elsewhere...

Sources close to Devries said Iowa was his dream job and that he was worried about our NIL
Since it looks like we aren’t getting him it’s a red flag for the program.
Either he doesn’t like who’s in charge ( Beth ) or the NIL and money isn’t there , or both.
To lose out on a guy who’s dream job is Iowa shows our NIL is weak and it’s not looking good and/or BG was playing with her food at the dinner table. If we get Ben and I hope we do but it’s definitely a red flag when we can’t land a coach who’s dream job was to be here
