I have never seen either McCaffery have a drink, so I had always heard that it was a sore spot between them and Dolph as well. I mean, that’s sort of how types of business are done in the Midwest. Not saying it’s right, but it’s reality. If you want people to contribute, you better be willing to sit down and have a beer and shoot the shit.

I know we are going both barrels on him now, but he was right. The radio guy shouldn't talk shit about the team, and you shouldn't call a black person a giant ape.
The “shit talking” was a hot mic situation though. The gorilla comment was just an old guy being an old guy with no ill intent. It was insensitive. He did his penance with appropriate sensitivity training and admitted fault. The McCafferys were always at odds with Dolph.

Exactly, words do have meaning. He didn't say giant ape, he said King Kong, a well known pop culture reference that's been used to call a person physically dominant a million times before

I’d never trust Dolph again if I was the coach during his Dailey hot mic. You can’t really apologize for that because everyone knows you meant every bit of it but got caught and that’s all the apology is about. He said what he meant. I don’t blame them for never forgiving him. He wasn’t sorry. He was scared and sad for himself.

Iowa needs to go to a professional front office model. They need a GM who can handle NIL (their salary cap) and recruiting/contracts for the players. Let someone like McCollum worry about coaching.
We should just let the new coach hire their son-in-law. I’m sure that’s the best choice out there.

Dolph should’ve made Fran apologize for his guard recruiting.

If you're the coach, you HAVE to make a big deal when your own radio guy talks shit about one of your players.

The fact that the Iowa media circled the wagon around Dolph was the actual stupid part of that situation.

Edit - the King Kong situation was really dumb.

Another glaring sign of how worthless the collective Iowa media is

Apparently he went ghost mode on everyone at WVU starting Sunday night. Most found out when we all did. And in 2025 style, most players blocked/unfollowed him and Tucker while talking shit through emojis.
Who knows, maybe this will work out for him and nobody will care in a week, but can't think of many times this stuff works out where the agent is pressing to back out on handshake deals and press for more and more money all while abandoning any real principle.

He will need to immediately make the tournament at Indiana and be contending every single year for a Big Ten Championship and Top 10 level ranking or they will eat him alive. He's already starting off on a bad foot there with the fans not seeming to even want him and the salary and years being stupid for who he is.

Yeah, and if only they would endorse road rockets it would have been a match made in heaven. JFC.

That’s the part that really surprises me. Yes, it was more money, and more money to work with. But you are the fifth choice versus the clear top choice. That would matter to me.

Again, I get his hesitation. It's a fuckton of money and Iowa is no slam dunk with a cavernous outdated arena and lack of NIL and fan support and a program that is currently #4 or #5 in the list of importance in the athletic department. Indiana doesn't have those problems, but has the other problems I listed.

With that said, I think I would have taken Iowa. You can build it back and pressure isn't nearly as much. More money is there if you perform.

He's never not been bad. Not an old age thing. He's folksy and people like him but he's... not good.

If he got Iowa to a Sweet 16 in five years, he’d get pretty much whatever he wants. It’s also an opportunity in time for someone like him to become a king as KF fades away. Already coming in as a favored son on a super long leash.

It's criminal that a gawky dork like grant nelson transfers to bama from north Dakota. Plenty of examples like this from the last 5 years. The falbos era of college sports.

Fran was finally landing guys with real money to offer this year. Im done with his in game coaching though, maddening. But it makes me optimistic for the future.

It doesn't have to be the agent employing principle. He's in it only for his immediate pay day. DD could have very easily overruled him and stuck with the handshake.

As much as it's said how hard it is to win at Iowa, of the last 5 Indiana coaches, only one has performed at a level considered remotely within expectations of Indiana fans. And that coach was fired for something a coach would never get fired for today. Odds not likely on DD's side. But he's getting his bag and moment so he likely doesn't care

It's hard to say in his shoes I would have done differently. I absolutely do not begrudge him taking the money. Another guaranteed $1-2M per year for even 3 years is money most people couldn't fathom.

But it's also undeniable the leash will be incredibly shorter where he's going. He'll carry no personal cache whatsoever going into that job like he would have at Iowa - and that's obvious from some of the initial fan reaction he's getting.

As a competent coach with a high floor and the approval rating and backing he would have, I almost can’t envision a situation where he doesn’t get a contract extension at Iowa on top of his 6 years. It would have to be a total flame out or scandal. He’s here 8+ years unless he wanted to move up.

Crean was fired after 2 outright Big Ten titles and 3 S16’s in his last six years.

Agreed, but have seen times where the pressure and quick turnaround can make people lose themselves. Agents especially can be manipulative and pushy.

I think its Final Four or bust at Indiana. Especially now with them publicly committing a shit ton to NIL.

The NIL situation is interesting, players definitely are in a good position at this point. For me it is a hard sell to the majority of Iowa fans to tell them to donate based on where the money has/could go. I get that is part of it now. Imagine giving $500 as a fan and having someone like Freeman come into the season out of shape and already out the door. Then shut it down.
Same think Tucker Devries is getting from West Virginia fans.
Iowa hiring a coach now is bringing a lot of this to light for Iowa fans. Fran needed to be gone, it had runs its course. Interesting to see it all play out.

Not necessarily a scumbag in the scenario. Could have been...
Agent and BG agree 3.5 for 6 and 5-6 NIL, subject to DD and BG meet
Indy flies in and offers the moon, DD says I can't walk away from 12 mil (or whatever the difference is)
Agent calls BG and tells her if Iowa can get closer maybe?
BG says no thanks, good luck.

What is the general feeling on Will Wade? I heard someone bring his name up. Looks like he did well at LSU before some recruiting violations. Which in my opinion makes him a stronger candidate. BM is still probably the better and safer choice.
