Not sure I understand the Texas Tech coaches. Wouldn’t that mean McCasland is fine with letting them go? I doubt he just gives Ben one of his coaches out of the goodness of his heart even if they are BFFs.

And I doubt he could stop them from going if they wanted to leave.

I did a quick search to see if his salary is public, and the only thing I found is a story about their top two assistants getting a raise, no mention of Barnwell. It's possible he's at the bottom of their pecking order and Iowa is going to pay him more.

Obviously they can leave if they want - just seems weird he’d try to steal one of his buddies coaches when there are a million other ones out there. Giving one of them a nice raise is possible I guess, but still just doesn’t make sense to me given how close they are.

I definitely see what you’re saying. Could be that Barnwell wants to get back to the Midwest, it would be a pay/responsibility bump and he has someone ready to slide in. Probably been an open conversation type of thing rather than him just trying to rip him away.

Every roster is going to cost a minimum of $10m to be competitive in the power conferences no matter how you build it. If you build it through the portal, the going rate for a medium-top level transfer is $1.5m+.

If you build through high school and develop guys on the cheap, once they get good you have to pay them as well. Sure, you might get a discount, but anyone that averages 15+ points and shoots well from three knows they are going to get $1m+ if they put their name in the portal.

So you're going to need $2m each for your top 2-3 guys. Maybe $500k-$1m for the other two starters. $350k for your 6th-8th guys. $150k+ for the rest of your roster. $6m (top 3 starters) + $3m (5th-8th) + $1m (rest of the roster).

Top top level teams like Duke going to start getting in the teens for their roster spend.

Yep, and it just happened. Kansas brought in this kid out of high school. He averaged 5 and 5 in 16 minutes per game. He puts his name in the portal and gets a monster deal to stay at Kansas. All this tells players is that every single year you should put your name in the portal to extract as much money as possible. Yearly free agency for every single player is madness.
