Dr Tom recruited 3 McDonalds All-Americans.

Even outside the McD' AA, Matt Bullard, Ricky Davis, Dean Oliver, Joey Range, Andre Woolridge were all huge recruits better than any single recruit that Alford brought in except maybe the guy that he paid from Tennessee. This doesn't even include the goofy white guys that Dr. Tom put in the NBA like Bowen and Koch. The Big Ten was vicious in those years, so he had to recruit well to compete. Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, fucking Illinois, fucking Minnesota, fucking Wisconsin all had final four teams during his tenure.

We used to cream our pants at the thought of one Top 100 recruit coming here under Fran. Dr Tom had at least one per class. Put some god damn respect on his name.

Fair or not the perception was that he couldn't bring in enough talent to win

Three decades of shitty recruiting after him doesn't change that

Exactly

Iowa was a high tier program capable of bringing in the best talent in the nation at one time

It wasn't unreasonable
When was that? Bear in mind I've only been an Iowa fan for nearly 50 years.

Lute's recruiting is sometimes seen through the rosy window of 1980.

Take away Ronnie and that roster looks a lot less elite. One great player got that team there.

He got a lot of really good guys, but they would be strong 3 stars, some 4, in today's rating systems. He had some busts like Fort, like everyone does, but for the most part he just brought in consistent good but not great talent like the Boyles and Brookins, and got a handful of elite HS kids like Stokes, Payne, and Lohaus. He then coached the hell out of them.

Tom brought in as much high quality as Lute, but his misses were bigger and most of his fallbacks like Gomes and Robinson were not even close to being Big Ten players.

Mens basketball used to be like womens basketball. Nobody gave a fuck.

UCLA was basically unchallenged for a decade.

First part is absolutely false.

JJ and Freddie would have beat UCLA in 70 if Jacksonville doesn't get a lucky bounce.

247 has Cayden Daughtry up to #3 overall in their updated rankings. That has to put him in the 3-5 million dollar range.

As stupid as it sounds, are we best served spending a bunch of money for a one year player

Maybe the Moon dude that passed left a chunk designated for PG acquisition.

I don't think he's a great NBA prospect. He will likely be a great multiple year college player.

Agree. The NBA really dislikes tiny guards right now. The last one-and-done, lottery PG this size I can think of was Rob Dillingham; and he has been awful thus far
