McCollum's team was kind of an exception, but signing an unknown high school kid only benefits you next year only if he is good, as if he is good, you have to re-recruit him all over again.

At least pulling a known commodity out of the portal, one knows exactly what to expect.

It sucks, but it is reality.

I don't know, it would be interesting to see what percentage of spending goes towards the portal vs recruiting. I get the impression that teams with deep pockets, tend to view portal players as better investments. I could see Iowa prioritizing recruits and maybe stealing a few.
