I have some Insiders!!1! at West High that are getting sick of his and Margaret’s tantrums in the crowd. He’s been real close to getting the boot and had officials tell him to shut up several times
Lol. Nobody even shows up for the West High games. Who gives a fuck.

Being a jackass at an Iowa City West game would have been the least of Alford’s problems at Iowa off the court.

I sat next to Fran when West player Mousecatine two years ago in the substate final. He’s a fucking spaz no doubt about it. I thought it was funny.

Lol is this the person we want coaching at Iowa?
biting my tongue..
Oh whatever. I just find it funny that when the team is losing we nitpick over every fucking thing. It ain’t about anything other than winning or losing.

When we’re winning he’s fiery. When we’re losing he’s boorish. I find it all so disingenuous

I agree with that. Barta isn't going to fire Fran in the next 5 years unless the program completely falls apart.
Do you think he keeps his job for 5 years if we don't make the tournament in that time?
I think he will make the tournament at some point during that stretch.

Looking at everything, I think Fran would have to completely lose the support of people like Gasser to get rid of him. He has been here for 10 years now. His kids have all grown up in Iowa City and 2 of them will be on the team next year. He has deep ties in the community and with the boosters. Barta would basically have to gut that family to make a change.

Unless you have someone really good to immediately step in and make sure everyone doesn't transfer, not seeing where they make the change and put the program into chaos and have to pay millions on top of it.

The odds are better that Fran will right the ship going forward. He has a legit quick PG that they have been missing coming in. Patrick is a Top 50 player. The still have Garza and Wieskamp and Nunge has a lot of potential.

Let's see how this year plays out.

This is what it all comes down to. if you have an Archie Miller on the line, fine. Otherwise we are full-on "better the devil you know than the devil you don't" mode.

It isn't even a situation where you would be "scared" of hiring someone new or some shit like that, but more or the specific circumstances and the fact that there are some really good players on this team that are young enough to bail on you and transfer to big programs. Garza and Wieskamp could transfer to anywhere except the 1 and done blue blood programs.

The next step in all of this if this year doesn't go well is Fran has to make some coaching changes. Speraw you have to keep for the connections he has in Iowa, but there is no reason that Sherm and Francis should stay around.

Agreed, but we said the same thing last year (and about the football team in the past). This probably won't happen unless Andrew gets a head gig somewhere or Sherm decides to retire.

I can justify speraw for his shooting skills and instate connections. Sherm should probably retire.

Which of course you wouldn’t hear anything about if iowa was making the tournament every year.

Just for purposes of pure amusement, I wouldn't mind Barta firing Fran and replacing him with Hoiberg.

7th in this big ten is likely a top 40 team.

Without Cook, Iowa might have the worst roster in the Big Ten. I’m fine giving Fran two more years to get back to the NCAA’s, but if Cook leaves after this season it ain’t happening next year.

Fran almost got thrown out of another high school game last week at West High. Is this really who we want coaching our men’s team?
Ha what the fuck? That isn't even remotely true.

Idk man. This is his 9th year? If we don't make it this year that's 3 in a row. Going into his 10th year being in a position to not make it 4 years in a row seems unacceptable.

Which is right about where we currently are
Yep.

People are still football mode in terms of the value of each game. 0-3 in the douche in football is devastating but there are still 17 games left in for this team.

The real concern is the effort, not the losses.

I just heard from someone that was at the game that Fran was absolutely obnoxious the other night. To the point that it was uncomfortable. No idea idea if he almost got kicked out, but Zaius isn’t completely making stuff up here.

The wisconsin game was the big loss, but not wholly unexpected. As a fan, the last 10 minutes of the first half of Purdue, and all of MSU are just horrible to watch.

What a difference a week makes.

I would take Fran over Steve any day of the week, by the way.

Steve was fired for going 7-6 in the noncon with losses to Belmont and Liberty while coaching at UCLA. Fran, for all of his problems, is better than Alford.

Tough league this year (like most years)
Shawnee struggles with this. I ultimately think the league is average to good in a time when college basketball is pretty bad. This is likely to be the 19th year without a title.
This is dumb. It's the number one ranked league by metrics and will probably produce the most NCAA bids. Average to good? Not even going to get into CBB being bad now.

2 of the top 6 in the top 25 and KenPom are in the Big Ten. It's right there with the ACC for likelihood of producing a champ which is a bad way to measure best league anyways

First, I didn't say the league wasn't the best this year. It probably is in comparison.

Second, its really undeniable that college bball is pretty bad & likely to get worse once the one & done is gone. Watching a regular season game between two teams that doesn't include your team is miserable. I don't even try anymore. I'll go watch my British dramas.

Third, the two Michigan schools are pretty good. Could either win a title? Maaaaybe Michigan, sure.
I don't understand how you think producing titles isn't a good measuring stick. Isn't that the point of it? If you're not doing that occasionally that says something about the league. To me its a bunch of average to good teams that beat each other on their home courts mostly then get to the tourney they can't beat the truly best teams. I think that's how the Big Ten is viewed from the outside too & why they'll likely get less bids than y'all think.

The biggest reason the giant douche fails to win it all is because teams like Michigan State, Purdue and Wisconsin goon it up in league play but that doesn’t fly in the tournament. It’s not really a surprise that Michigan has probably been the best team at outperforming expectations in the tournament in recent memory because their style is more suitable to the way it is officiated.

I think what Shawnee is trying to say is that the Big 10 is filled with a bunch of top 30-40 teams but lacks a dominant Kentucky type elite team. Even though Kentucky is on a downward trajectory. Big 10 seems to be well represented in the Sweet 16 and Final 4 though with different teams involved each year it seems

Would KU win 14 straight conference titles in the Big 10? I’m not so sure about that.

This is pretty much what I’m saying & no KU wouldn’t win 14 straight. Several but not 14.

Shooting is objectively better than it's ever been. Ball handling, athleticism and versatility of bigs are better than they were 20-30 years ago.

I used to agree with what Shawnee is saying but I’ve watched more college basketball this year and it’s better than it’s been in a long time. The Indiana-Michigan and Indiana-Maryland games were played at a very high and efficient level.

Saying it’s an average product now is like saying ‘thugs no defense’ when discussing the NBA.

It's definitely gotten better the last couple years. Some of the rule changes have helped. There are still too many games ruined in college by terrible officiating though.
