He backed down from no one. If I recall correctly he made his 34th consecutive free throw that game. A record that still stands.
That's also the yearly reminder that Eric Snow was shooting 9% from the free throw line going into the game and came out of the game shooting worse.

I was actually wrong, I believe he went something like 1/4 in the game and actually improved his free throw shooting. If you watch video 9, which is basically the comeback the last 4 minutes, MSU had some absolutely terrible free throw shooters getting fouled. Every guy Iowa fouled shot under 52% from the line. Iowa was able to make that comeback by missing a bunch of free throws as well.

Yup. I knew nothing about Iowa basketball at the time. My dad was driving us to our daycare lady at 6:15 the following morning when they reported it on the radio. My dad has never really been into sports but even he was pretty upset about the news. I just remember him saying ‘He was their best player.’
