I wasn't following Iowa BB closely at the time he was kilt, so I don't know the answer to this. But I've always questioned if he was the type of player who would have had his jersey retired absent the tragic accident.

Was he good enough to have it retired had he just lived and played out his career?

No, I will not DMOFR. That's why you're here.

Discuss.

Maybe. I don't remember him winning any awards but I think he was well on his way the year he was killed. Every season his game took a big leap.

Based on what he had accomplished at the time I don't think so. But he made huge improvement each year and I think he would have gotten there

Would have been a 19-20 point, 11 board per game player hits senior year.

That's better than a few of the guys who have retired numbers

If Reggie Evans doesn't have his jersey retired, Street would not have. Similar stats

I think Street would have taken another leap forward as a Senior. He was also on much better teams than Reggie and would have been a 4 year player

He would have had to have a monster senior season, which was possible.

He would have been close. Huge growth each year, was likely a 20 point 10 rebound guy and 1st Team All-Big Ten and AA level guy as a Senior.

Those stats would have put him at about 13 PPG for his career.

For comparison, Acie averaged 15.3...Jess 13.9 (would have been less if Chris was still there his freshman season).

It also depends somewhat on your NBA career, and I think he would have had a 10+ year career.

Either way, it was no slam dunk.

Counter point though. Acie Earl left as second all time in scoring, had great Jr and Sr seasons, and doesn’t have his jersey retired.

The answer is unequivocally no. They have specific criteria for this, which Street would not have met. Scroll to the bottom for the different criteria for retired numbers and retired jerseys.

Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but I think the criteria was put in place post Garza. I think Barta told Devyn, while Roy was dying, that Iowa was done retiring numbers. Then not long after they retired Garza's. So they kind of retrofitted the criteria.

Big picture I agree, his number wouldn't have been retired.

I think they put those criteria in more recently. Stokes and Armstrong (they later changed his retired number to a retired jersey, whatever that means) did not meet them and the mid-1950s guys made the entire program over-retired on jerseys.

It means he gets his name in the rafters. Wieskamp wore #10.

I’d say that glorified, rightly so, after his death.

He was a really good college basketball player. Not retirement worthy.

Acie isn't exactly helping himself off the court

fan favorite, overachiever, would have been AA. not retirement-worthy.
Look at the AA teams from 93-94. Street would not have been on that list. And that’s not even a knock on Street. There’s some all-time names on there.

NABC 3rd team.

Maybe he beats out Lou Roe on AP or UPI.

I love all the he would have been an all-American.
I doubt it. He was good, he wasn’t that good. We just loved the way he played and then he died tragically.
For those who are too young to remember, it’s hard to overstate how beloved he was for Iowans.

Street busted his ass constantly, showed his emotions, seemed like a really good kid, and was an Iowan.

Banks strikes me as the Chris Street Award winner to be on the team this year

On Monday the 19th I had to run to the vet over by the Highlander since it was a rare day off for me. I'm on Dodge north of 80 maybe four times a year when I drink beer in Solon or get bagels at Fuel in Mt. Vernon. Looking back I realize I never quite knew where Chris's accident happened. Anyway, tonight with the ladies up 17 with 3 minutes to go and almost blowing the lead to Maryland in OT, I couldn't help but think of my night in the Breslin back in 1993. Wade Lookingbill says Iowa was down 18 with 3 1/2 minutes to go, which is insane. I hopped on YouTube for highlights and found Acie Earl's channel where he discusses all these books he's published on Amazon ... about Acie Earl. And a couple on rap and slavery. I kept thinking Acie was a big name around here 35 years ago, but each of his recent videos from years ago have about 25 views each. Not even Acie or his family/friends are watching! The only thing that ever mattered was Acie's basketball production within a narrow age range in his early 20s. The rest is noise. Hoops glory is impermanent, boys, and if you're Chris, cruelly so.

Speaking of Venom, my grandfather and Acie's mom were friends for several years as she was a frequent customer at his pharmacy. Knowing I was an enormous Iowa basketball fan, I received a fair amount of Acie memorabilia during that time.

Probably worth a pretty penny now if I can find it collecting dust in my dad's basement
