I finally read the entire thread and Chopsy's wife said exactly what I posted above that he would just end up boring her with football posts. Hilarious.

I think it's a great way to signify that what you're posting isn't necessarily what you believe, but what the populace believes.

So, no. And gfy.

Does Iowa have the right stuff for Big Ten Football?

Can Iowa win in 2012?

Head Coach - Kirk Ferentz is a fine coach... grandpa to be, which should make it all a little more interesting this Big Ten season. When is the due date?

QB - James Vandenberg is not a mobile QB and is not a use your feet to beat your opponent type guy. That is sexy right now in the Big Ten...

So, he is ranked by Phil Steele #17 for his looks? But, not mentioned really among Big Ten Top 4, even though only Denard Robinson #7 is ahead of him. Iowa has a solid starter at QB. Could Iowa have a special season in 2012. It starts here.

RB - Iowa has gone through 10 RBs over past four seasons or so? Committee assignments for 2012?

Phil Steele says true frosh Greg Garmon in his preview, with Barkley Hill next. By season's end, he may be right. Marcus Coker did just in 2010, as a true frosh. He was slowed by injury.

Does Damon Bullock remind anyone of Mike Sanders? Sanders played both WR and RB for J Hayden Fry...

DeAndre Johnson appears headed to doghouse for 2012. He certainly appears to have a Big Ten body for RB. Wisconsin off the field issues at RB, so maybe he should play on in home games this year and see how that works for him?

Iowa does not have a RB strength like other Big Ten teams. Player to be named later? Will Jordan Canzeri redshirt in 2012? It will be an interesting year at this position.

FB - Junior Brad Rogers had a great game in 2010 in Ann Arbor, if I recall correctly. Will he see the ball a little in one back sets as a junior? Depth should be fine at FB, but Rogers appears the top dog.

WR - I am not high on the Big Ten at the receivers position heading into 2012. MSU must completely retool. Iowa is under the radar heading into 2012, at QB and the receivers position.

Keenan Davis is the #2 top returning WR behind Wisconsin's Jared Abbredaris in Big Ten. Adrian Arrington played at Michigan for Lloyd Carr. Davis has had a quick career for Iowa. Will he shine as a senior. Who will have the better fourth season in his career? I am rooting for Davis. Arrington never had to play the #1 spot at Michigan. Can Davis shine as Iowa's #1 or will the TE emerge as the go to man or someone else?

Kevonte Martin-Manley was clearly Iowa's #3 WR as a freshman last year. Can he emerge as a top 12-16 WR in the Big Ten. Many names are being thrown out before him. He caught and scored like Nebrantska's freshman Kenny Bell, but he is not looked at as a big play threat (25 yd long) and not much for average. He made some big plays to move the chains though...

Will Maurice Fleming emerge at WR, as true frosh in 2012? What role will junior Don Schumpert play, as a tall WR, like Davis? Does senior Steve Staggs play that role like a lot of Iowa walkons at WR for Iowa.

Receiver doesn't look all that bad, but Ohio, Michigan and Nebrantska will get the press heading into season.

TE - Iowa and Wisconsin typically find a way to reload at TE. Iowa is stronger than any other Big Ten teams in this unit, though other individuals may rank higher than Iowa's top dog.

OL - Phil Steele has Iowa tied for 9th with Big Ten rival Purdue. If true, good reason Iowa is 50th in the Top 124 power ratings (pg 331). Purdue is #52.

James Ferentz is the anchor in his senior season. Is he better than Brian and will he finish better than his big brother new OL coach? How will this line play out under the rookie position coach. How much of a role will Dad play in Brian's development as an assistant? Was this the right move for Iowa?

Iowa must emerge with a solid O-Line in 2012 to have a good, solid season. Can Iowa compete for a division title? It starts in the O-Line at Iowa.

Sophomore Brandon Scherff needs to channel the mojo Riley Reiff and LTs past at Iowa. Scherff is expected to be Iowa's next NFL can't miss, but he only has thee starts under his belt at LG to build on. Further, Iowa is young in O-Line outside seniors Ferentz and G Todd Tobin. Will juniors Conor Boffell and Brent Van Sloten play the next man in role to perfection. Where will redshirt freshmen Austin Blythe and Jordan Walsh fit in? Does junior Nolan MacMillian return from injuries, after 6 starts as a freshman? Iowa has other parts, but how will they end up fitting in 2012?

Offensive coaches bring mix of youth and experience to Iowa with new OC Greg Davis and new O-Line coach Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz. Will WR coach Soup Campbell enjoy new look and opportunities? Davis will be upstairs, so who will lead from the sidelines? It should be an interesting 2012 for Iowa. Schedule is favorable.

Can Iowa offense and defense emerge as Purdue did in 2000? How strong will special teams be? Can offense and special teams help young defense develop and keep them out of negative situations to allow time to grow? Can LBs stay healthy to emerge better than just a middle of a pack unit?

Iowa's defensive line is rated better than Northwestern, Minnesota and Indiana coming into 2012. Ouch!

Watching Iowa vs. Michigan 2011... Iowa will miss wing span and play of DE Broderick Binns. Who will step in?

Not one player is among Top 16 mentioned in Big Ten lists as a player worthy of all-Big Ten mention. How will new coach Reece Morgan do moving over from OL spot? Will Iowa fans need to stock up on Capt'n Morgan to stomach the results in 2012 of this unit?

No question "that this is the D's biggest ?" indeed for 2012!

The unit was up and down... the good, the bad and the ugly was on display and changes were needed, after 2011. However, it performed well in wins over Northwestern and Michigan in 2011. Can Iowa get some substance of a stout unit for 2012.

A new defensive coordinator will be tested as all the position coaches are new. Is this Good or will it get ugly most of the time in 2012? How good will opponents running games be vs. Iowa?

LB James Morris is considered the cream of the unit, with Christian Kirksey receiving mention, as well. Both are juniors, along with junior Anthony Hitchens at the third LB spot. Will the D-Line keep opponents honest enough to allow Iowa's LBs to have success? Remember the issues in 2005-07 at Iowa with ups and downs in D-Line. Depth is not outstanding, but if top players remain healthy, we all should agree that this unit should only get better.

New defensive attack will really change look of secondary. Are they ready to play differently and execute and beat the opponent? Iowa was known to be strong, bend, but don't break under former DC Norm Parker. Will risk, reward under new DC Phil Parker pay dividends? Or will Iowa see more one sided losses, but better games vs. weaker opponents?

Is senior Micah Hyde capable of becoming an All-American in 2012? How does he compare with the best in the Big Ten at CB? Is MSU Johnny Adams the best CB? Is Hyde next?

How well will junior BJ Lowery be at other corner spot? Is junior Tanner Miller a lock to be a solid three year starter? What will new starters bring?

Iowa special teams have declined, since better seasons under Kir Ferentz. 2012 doesn't rank well?

A lot of questions to be answered as Iowa nears 2012 season.

peace
.

Will Iowa out perform 2007 Iowa Hawkeyes in 2012? Reply
Iowa in 2007 was rated by Phil Steele at #32, compared to #50 in his power ratings. Iowa #29 in Phil's Top 40 compared to #38 this year.

Like 2007, Iowa opens in Soldier Field vs. Northern Illinois. NIU is far better today.

Iowa should be far better at QB in 2012 vs. 2007? Senior Vandenberg vs. Sophomore Christensen?

The schedule is more favorable in 2012, than 2007? I would say so.

Iowa returned all four starters in D-Line entering 2007 though. This unknown in Iowa City will determine a lot about Iowa's fait.

But, how good was Iowa's D-Line in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2011, when Iowa fell to only 6-7 wins each season?

How good will special teams be in 2012 vs. 2007? Or, the past four seasons for that matter?

I believe Kirk Ferentz is a smart coach and ill seasons past will help Iowa's coaching staff this season. However, like 2007, September will be a key. Unlike 2007, the Big Ten opener is in October, rather than September.

Iowa faced back to back games at ISU and at Wisconsin in 2007. Look at Iowa's first five games in 2012. Sure there are landmines, but better opportunities for player development for 2012.

No Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio State is huge in 2012.

Ryan Donahue was in his first season as a RS frosh in 2007. Can someone fill the void at punter in 2012? How much will Eric Guthrie be missed?

How solid will Iowa's return and coverage units be? How well will new special teams rules help or hurt Iowa in 2012?

Iowa had off the field issues in 2007, as well. No one on the 2012 team played or was on the roster in 2007.

The positives of the 2008- 2009 seasons are present. Further, hopefully the lessons from the 2010-11 seasons.

Iowa saw Jevon Pugh rise to the occasion in 2007 true frosh at RB in the 2ot win vs. MSU. Who steps up in 2012?

I don't see Iowa tanking in 2012, as we witnessed in 2007. On Iowa!
and

Wow, what would they say in Washington DC today. Criminal profiling?

Johnson is snake bit and clearly is finding trouble this weekend.

Doghouse indeed. Not sure he is Benny Sap level yet.

I hope we are seeing the beginning of a solid football season though at Iowa.

Focus should be this game. They are better than a lot of people think and will give us a good test in our first game. What is your key to winning this football game? Mine: Defensive Line

I'm hearing that Reply
Kirk is the heir apparent to the head coach position at The University of Texas, when Mack Brown "retires". Can't link anything right now. A person very close to the Iowa athletic department whispered it to me. Said that they over heard Kirk talking to Mack on the phone. Timing would be right with his last son graduating hs. Hopefully not true but you never know. Kirk is a competitor and won't be satisfied, hopefully it's wrong though.

That's the most retarded thing I've ever read.

So someone 'whispers' something to you and you run to a message board to post it. And you don't have a link? Really, why is that?

Kirk talked to Mack on the phone, it probably has nothing to do with the fact that Greg Davis is his new offensive coordinator.

Full on retard right there.

How good is the Big Ten in 2012? Reply
Iowa doesn't play Wisconsin, Ohio State or Illinois. Three bowl teams last year.

Iowa beat Michigan and Northwestern in the Legends division.

Iowa beat MSU in '09 and '10. Series is generally competitive.

Iowa beat IU and Purdue last year, though you never know what will happen?

Minnesota was defeated 55-0, then 12-0 in Vandenberg's first start at Kinnick. Currently, two game losing streak.

Penn State beat Iowa last year, but Iowa may play better at home this year?

Iowa hasn't beat Nebrantska, since '81. Can Iowa get the Cornhuskers this year?

How good is the Big Ten this year? Middle of the road? Does any one look BCS ready for a title run?

Not really...

Here is Flick's response. LOL.

Re: How good is the Big Ten in 2012? Reply

A few points to add to cid's post.

Chuck Hartlieb was the starting quarterback during Ronald Reagan's last year in office.

Penn State went undefeated in 1994. Can they repeat?

Ohio State was the MNC in 2002, though they fell by multiple scores in Kinnick in 2004 while Troy Smith was a freshman.

Nick Saban's Spartans beat Steve Spurrier's Gators in the Citrus Bowl in January of 2000. Former Florida coach Urban Meyer will try to return OSU to dominance.

Phil Collins's "In the Air Tonight" climbed to #19 on the Billboard top 100 in the summer of 1981. Iowa went to the Rose Bowl that season.

Miss Lippy's car is blue.

Can Iowa reclaim the Cy-Hawk trophy in Kinnick?

Iowa is 2-3 against Minnesota in the last 5 seasons. Can they reverse the trend?

Glad you guys appreciate the follow up. Cid has to be autistic or have aspergers or something. He's too out to lunch to be for real!

As for #14, WHAT?!

Adolphus Shelton intercepted Brandon Kirsch to put Purdue away in 2002. Iowa went undefeated that year in conference play. If Iowa repeats, they will have played 14 games this year including a Bowl and Big Ten championship. This is Kirk's 14th year. Hmmm.... I guess I can see where Cid is coming from.

Bully Formation Reply
With all of the talk about Weissman being the top FB in our new two-deeps, I'm thinking the same thing a lot of other posters are thinking--we need to see Weissman and Rodgers in the backfield at the same time. I say we have a a formation with two TEs, Rodgers at TB, Weissman at fullback, and our most physical WR split out. (Side question: Who is our best blocking WR right now?)

Let's call this formation the "Bully Formation." Now, I know we have a great QB, a stud TE, and some promising receivers. But, why not play a little smash mouth football to eat up clock while marching the ball down the field?

One play I would have is for the receiver to crash into an OLB, getting a
nice seal on the DE with my TE & tackle, and pull a guard. Weissman
would lead the way and pick up the safety/MLB/whoever gets to the
outside first, and Rodgers would put his head down and just barrel down
the field.

The next play, I would run an isolation play to the A gap, or B gap
depending on defensive alignment. Ferentz works with our weaker guard to
seal one DT, the stronger guard seals the other DT, the tackles let the
DEs go, and continue up to the second level. Finally, you isolate a
linebacker with Weissman and Rodgers coming right at him.

I say our boys win that fight.

By this point, the other
team's LBs will all be bleeding from the nose, and Scherff will be
chomping at the bit to inflict more pain and suffering. Ferentz will
have turned one DT into mush. Meanwhile, the
opposition would be down to their 3rd string strong side safety, as the
first two will be severely concussed.

I apologize for my crazy enthusiasm, but man do I love football.

In the Michigan game last year, KMM made a key third down catch. He will hopefully be that guy this year.

Like Stanford in 2011 and Michigan in 1997, Quarterback James Vandenberg will need to use the TE and RBs in the passing game.

The coaching staff has good work ahead. Playing with more passion and energy would be a nice in 2012.

As Kirk Ferentz suggests... Iowa should have a good football team. On Iowa!

So he thinks Greg Garmon is going to score 3 TDs, the Hawks will win by 3 scores, and Carl Davis is going to record 3 sacks.

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and, you know, disagree with every single one of those predictions.

OTOH, I think 3 could be (1) the margin of victory for Iowa, (2) the number of turnovers Iowa commits, (3) the down on which Iowa again shows an infuriating inability to stop anyone, (4) the number of sacks surrendered by Tobin, and (5) the average number of beers I consume per quarter to avoid becoming completely enraged.

You forgot the number of times Iowa will punt from the opponent's 35 yard line.
