When I thought about what it would take to beat the Wolverines this Saturday in 2023, how could I have overlooked the game in Ann Arbor in 1990? Who was QB in that game?

If I’m not mistaken I believe it was Matthew Rodgers

Cid chimes in on the OC search.....

---------------

Iowa needs an OC that will lead his players and unit to success.

Many Iowa fans want more RPO.

Iowa needs more success from the QB position.

Something to say that is certainly successful whether an OC, a DC or Head coach.

In 2000, Bob Stoops had his best season during his second season at Oklahoma. Hayden Fry nearly won six games only to fall to 4-7 his second season.

Iowa fans, coach Kirk Ferentz and this 2024 team likely want to have a highly successful season ahead.

One aspect about Tim Lester compared to Kevin Johns, since 2018, he has been in Big Ten country, while in the MAC. Typically, WMU plays Iowa or Michigan or Michigan State annually in one of their OOC games.

If Kevin Johns is announced, I am going to root for his third Big Ten stop to be his finest yet.

If it Tim Lester, it will be better to see him in black and gold this time around with as opposed to old gold and black.

Could their be another candidate not announced❓

These two quotes from CID are gold, don't want them lost in the sea of Tweets:

"In 2000, Bob Stoops had his best season during his second season at Oklahoma. Hayden Fry nearly won six games only to fall to 4-7 his second season."

"Iowa fans, coach Kirk Ferentz and this 2024 team likely want to have a highly successful season ahead."

CID is a treasure. Don't ever change.

There are 275 pages of posts on the HR site about the OC search and CID is personally responsible for 175 of those pages.

I have been on HR for probably 10 or 15 years, but I do miss CID posts. Back then, I hated them. Now, they are perfection everytime.

It's June, and the Big Ten Media Days for 2025 will take place from July 22 to July 24 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. All 18 teams will participate, and the event will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.

The 2025 SEC Media Days will take place from July 14-17 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the College Football Hall of Fame and Omni Atlanta Hotel. This event will feature all sixteen SEC coaches and is an important kickoff for the upcoming college football season.

Week 1: Texas at Ohio State - winner should be #1 to kickoff season‼

Week 2: Michigan at Oklahoma - I moved up the Sooners, since they likely win in Norman. Bearish on both these programs, but Alabama fell last year; Wolverines are going for five straight against defending champion Ohio State‼

Week 3: Wisconsin at Alabama - Tide are 2-1, losing lone game 15-0 in November 1928. Will the Power 2 play some future games up North in November again❓

So, my updated Top 25

Yes, I like Minnesota beating Nebrantska in Minneapolis this fall.

Week 0: Kansas State vs. Iowa State - can the Wildcats win like Northwestern over Nebrantska in '23 in Dublin 🇮🇪 Ireland❓

Michigan in 2023, Ohio State in 2024, so is Penn State next❓

I have a hard time seeing it, under James Franklin, despite the new coaches around him 🤔

Oregon at Penn State in Week 4, as the Nittany Lions open 2025, like prior Big Ten national champions with three straight non-P4/5 opponents.
  • Nevada
  • FIU
  • Villanova

It should be a great upcoming 2025-26 College Football season.

Lindy's and Athlon's both have Texas over Penn State❓

However, Phil Steele is aiming at Penn State over Clemson did I read or hear shared this week 🤔

I like Clemson and Iowa certainly has that poor man's Clemson when media and fans criticize both programs for use of the portal. Both teams expanded their use quietly this off-season.

The Hawkeyes are hopefully a Top 25 program by the start of 2025 or after their victory in Ames and like 2021, ride out the season in the Top 20 or better ✌

It's Year ✌

Unlike 2021, Hawkeyes take next step in year two under OC Tim Lester. Iowa's STs are Top 5 in nation; and more DC Phil Parker magic on tap for Kirk Ferentz's 27th edition.

The Hawks don't get Illinois or Michigan, but Indiana, USC and Nebrantska are in the picture along with 2 of the Top 3 Big Ten programs!

Go Hawks ❤🖤💛

cids’ posts have often take a harder edge and sometimes bluntly negative view of Iowa recently. Like he’s now a hard hitting journalist.

I am a giant douche This Morning: SEC vs. I am a giant douche

Tier 2 - based on brand
  • USC
  • Nebrantska
  • Wisconsin
Buckeye on discussion laughed at Iowa being first one mentioned as Tier 2. Suggested a laugh from SEC guy.

No mention later, when talking about Kentucky that Iowa split lately. One guy placed Kentucky down with MS State which is nuts.

Iowa is Tier 2 but, in the eyes of SEC, a Tier 2 of Iowa, Illinois and Indiana doesn't do it. And, please don't put in Minnesota with that fan support.

Washington got very little respect in Tier 3 with no mention of playing in CFB title game against Michigan in 2023.

Bottom-line: USC, Nebrantska and Wisconsin all need to move up. The Huskers have 2 good seasons in 14 seasons in Big Ten at best.

They close with idea who should be in Tier 2, the brands need to show up and move up, and they did mention Iowa is Tier 2, but shouldn't be the first name listed, implied.

USC and Michigan should be flipped, the Buckeye suggested this morning. Okay.

LSU is a Tier 1 program in SEC they shared.

Illinois and South Carolina are mentioned as similar to one another.

Nebrantska and Florida are similar.

Wisconsin and Oklahoma are similar. Say what, OU bowled last year. The Badgers have dropped under Luke Fickel.

Commercial ....

I list it this way, presently, Tier 1 - TOP 4, Tier 2, I would flip WA and MN based on last several years, and so forth. Indiana may need to be moved down too!

Closing Friday question, is there a RB to worry about in '25 here?

He would have looked great in Black & Gold, but would you trade rooms?

Go Hawks ✌

As a team in the conference, Iowa is picked 9th by Phil Steele and 10th by Lindy's Sports with @TomKakert written article in the broader Big Ten edition. Athlon Sports has Iowa 7th for those who care about such things.

Happy June 30th as celebrate our nation's 249th on Friday 🇺🇸 And we all will hear from @TomKakert for the 21+ years we have enjoyed Tom's Fearless Forecast.

Phil Steele has Notre Dame, Indiana, Iowa and Penn State in the "Going Down" category on Page 29.

Iowa is the ONE reading between the lines. Those other programs will sustain.

Iowa is 31st, narrowing beating out Wisconsin and Nebrantska in the power ratings 🤔

However, if the defensive line step up and can establish a pass rush, handle the EDGE in run defense: can Iowa keep the +12 in turnover margin.

Indiana reads as unbeatable looking at his PS ratings and approach to it all 🤔 Do we root for Bret Bielema the week ahead when his 5th Illini team to Bloomington to square off with Curt Cignetti's upstart IU team‼

Iowa last year had more points lost in the NFL Draft than this season. Iowa State has that role per Page 10. Ohio State, Georgia, Texas and Oregon are all expected to reload.

Phil Steele is bullish on Florida State, Washington, Michigan, Oklahoma State and Utah.

Bearish on Indiana and Iowa State. Please bring back '21 as Iowa will play again both teams in the same season and same venues.

Iowa had two net close losses last year 🤔

Indiana at Iowa clearly is a key one in '25.

Where does the teater totter fall for the Hawkeyes with a schedule that is clearly more difficult, but unlike seasons like 2018, the Hawkeyes avoid back to back road games this season (at Penn State and at Purdue in '18).

Odd year, low expectations, with awkwardly the best QB room in some time for Iowa. The Hawkeyes are hopefully better then the 2nd half of the Big Ten in 2025.

The Big Ten Conference was the best conference last season though a QB struggling Hawkeye team missed in a 27-24 bowl loss against SEC rich conference 😪 Better hopefully in '25.

The linebackers face what we saw in 2014, 2018 or 2023, when the Hawkeyes had to start three new backers in the room.

Iowa turns to a senior led unit. Like 2018, this team avoids Michigan and Ohio State but faces multiple tests, with three past 12-team CFB Playoff teams dotting the schedule.

This team should be better than 2018 and thankfully, the three CFB Playoff teams from '24 all have to come to Kinnick. Unlike 2018, Indiana and Penn State both have to come to Kinnick.

And, what will the receivers be like in 2025❓

Phil Steele has Iowa and Northwestern tied for last in the conference. TEs Addison Ostrenga and Zach Ortwerth appear to be undervalued heading into 2025, though WRs are the KEY question for OC Tim Lester.

Experience favors Iowa at multiple positions or position rooms heading into 2025.

Is too much being made of the loss of Kaleb Johnson to an offense that should be far more balanced and improved in '25❓

So, as we all know, it comes down to wins and losses with Iowa. It is what Kirk Ferentz speaks to, even OC Lester has pointed out the bottom-line when it comes down to the Hawkeyes and it's culture.

The most important stat is the W-L column. In 1981 and 2021, it was with punting and defense.

Hopefully, Iowa gets back to winning with balance in all three phases of the game, which makes for an exciting opportunity and hopefully a chance to build on the 8+ wins nine out of the last 10 seasons.

Note: Iowa was 6-2 in 2020 and had Iowa played Ohio State that season, the Athletic's Scott Dochterman still talks about how he likes Iowa's chances in that one. Why bring it up: Dochterman appears bullish on the '25 edition. I think he would tone down the rhetoric if he wasn't anticipating some excitement for '25‼

I enjoy the near complete absence of personal takes in his interminable screeds.
