In five completed seasons since this tweet, Georgia is 51-10 overall, with four SEC east division titles, one overall SEC title, two CFP appearances, one national runner-up and one national championship. The only season in this span where they won fewer than 11 games was the 2020 Covid year where they still managed to go 8-2 and win a NY6 bowl. For context, the tweet was in response to the Bulldogs being ranked #15 in the 2017 AP preseason poll.

Plus, I bet it was a pretty sweet eclipse.

What Iowa State could have done was not go winless in conference last year to make the people making those decisions have an opinion other than your team was going to be complete dog shit coming into the year.

From the Gazette:

“Iowa is in a small group of college football programs to end the last four seasons ranked in the AP Top 25.

Iowa is one of eight schools. The other seven — Georgia, Alabama, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Clemson*..
*Plus Iowa State if they hadn't beaten themselves so many times."

That's shocking. I am shocked.

But did Iowa finish top ten in FPI?

6-7 Auburn is higher than Iowa.

I do remember when FPI had Iowa in the 30s at 12-0 in 2015. Some Fuckoff from ESPN said it was due to Iowa’s low “Game Control,” metric, even though Iowa did not trail for like 5 games straight at one point. It’s almost like the formula is complete ass and that’s why they won’t release it for fear someone who understands math will make it out for what it is.

It is almost impossible to produce a metric that would be accurate across conferences over 12 games and 3 inter conference games. They absolutely have to bake in shit like recruiting rankings to make it work.

I was reading an article about the Giants firing Joe Judge and this first paragraph sounded somewhat familiar and appropriate here.

"In the NFL, there are smart people with legitimate processes who can defend their decision making by pointing to a previous history of success. Then, there are coaches who piggyback off the idea that everyone must have some kind of mystical process, and believe that by referencing such a thing it negates the need for any direct criticism."
