Supposedly a few of them have been offered jobs nobody would have refused even a decade ago (Phil Parker, Seth Wallace, LeVar Woods in particular) but all of them turned them down to stay with Kirk. I think with Phil Parker he is just an introvert and loves where he is and has extreme loyalty to Kirk.

Wallace and Woods because they have young families and also have extreme loyalty to Kirk.
Kirk earns himself unusual loyalty, that is undeniable.

Brian is Chris Farley in Tommy Boy, but you are right that his earlier offenses were more imaginative and were also his best. Not that he was ever good, but he became insanely dumb and conservative over time.

The hopeless draw plays on 3rd and 9, unwillingness to throw deep, jet sweeps to slow white receivers, and other frustrations we all know have been constants for awhile now.

Hopefully you’re right and Kirk is willing to give whoever gets the job enough leash to either hang themselves or actually field a respectable offense.
That tracks well with the talent decline at WR, QB and OL over that period.

I think anyone offensively ranked below 100th in any category should not be allowed to be considered
As it's been said before, with the current landscape of college football, and the shift towards there only being (2) power conferences, and the advantages that Iowa will have as a result....it's absolutely baffling that Kirk would, or would be allowed to hire an OC that didn't already have a significant track record in that role.

Remember, Kirk originally planned to be a teacher. I think he has a genuine interest in making the lives of others better through personal development.
Teaching is the only thing, developing a man to fulfill his potential. If he does a good teaching job, winning is the natural by-product,” said Upton Bell. “In a world that looks for conformity. Chuck is a different type of human being; he’s not as interesting as a coach as he is as a human being.”

I read Noll’s biography, which has a quote from Kirk on the jacket. There are a ton of similarities. Noll lived in the same town as Kirk’s high school.

Noll was a former guard who was obsessive about technique. His OC was Tom Moore. He had a reputation for being stoic on the sideline and a little distant with players.[/quote]

According to the Michigan State 247 reporter, Phil has turned down DC offers at Michigan and Alabama in recent years.

KSU, a member of a shit second tier conference, just lost their OC and they are in contact with Liberty’s OC Willy Korn. I’d take him, but Cade and Bacon would be shit fits for Jamie Chadwell’s awesome offense.

I don't think it is so much that it didn't continue as Kirk has some exceptional coaches on his coaching tree, but they just had opposite philosophies about it and it was a different time. Hayden encouraged his guys to move on to bigger and better jobs. Kirk's guys have stuck around forever.

A lot of that has to do with the pay of assistant coaches during Fry's era and now. That is back when lower level staff coaches didn't make jack shit and you had to keep upgrading yourself to make a comfortable salary.

Now the lowest guy on the staff makes about $450k with bonuses. The DC is about to make $2m soon. OC might make around $1.5m depending on who they hire. Special Teams Coordinator makes $800k. When you have those sorts of salaries along with the extreme stability that Iowa offers compared to the completely volatile environment of nearly every other college program, I don't blame guys for just sticking at Iowa.

J Hayden Fry signed on for $45k in 1979. What could the coordinators have gotten? Can't swear to it, but Danny Mac may have mentioned $18k as his first salary under Hayden. (Burnsie signed on at $15k in 1961.)

I want to say that in the late 90's Bielema was making something like $75k as the LB coach.

Oh, stop it...... (If the topics were political-social-religious issues, you'd be saying I was the biggest dumb fuck on the planet...;))

Thinking a little more about it, I think Hayden milked that "I wanted to hire guys that wanted to be head coaches" line pretty good after so many had made good, but was that the thinking back then?

When he came in, he brought his North Texas guys, kept some Iowa holdovers and added an Iowa high school coach.

NT Guys:
Brashier- Boyhood friend and DC. Kinda like Norm and Phil in that he was built to be a coordinator.
Snyder- The technocrat, the machine. OK, he surely knew Bill was gonna do something on his own if they made a go of it at Iowa.
Jackson- Career assistant; did Hayden imagine otherwise?
Clovis Hale (OL)- Good coach, but same deal as Jackson. Went back to Texas after 2 years and coached at TT or TCU and maybe Texas.(?)
Howard Cissell- D-Line, went into business after a year.
Del Miller and Don Patterson- I'm not sure if these two were considered full fledged staffers at first. That would take a better memory than mine.

Commings staffers:

Wyatt- Pretty obvious why he was retained. His smartest hire.(?) Without Bernie's guys, Hayden might well be remembered simply as having a nice Bill Mallory type tenure- with a much less legendary coaching tree.
Tom Cecchini- Stability hire? He had helped recruit and coach a solid group of returning linebacker-DEs
Mac- 25 years old, energetic, Iowa kid through and through. I imagine he just plain liked him as well.

Iowa High School Coach- Barry. I do imagine he knew Barry had ambitions after about 2 minutes. In hindsight, it was kind of amazing that he stayed 8 years.

KF- The famous blackboard presentation.

I wouldn't say identifying the Stoops brothers was very difficult. It was in their DNA.

Candidate wanted to introduce his male life partner at the hiring PC but they told him he had to be introduced as single and married to football.
